Parashat Balak (בָּלָק) — The 40th weekly Torah portion, seventh in the Book of Numbers (Bamidbar).
Balak king of Moab, fearing Israel’s victories, hires the prophet Balaam to curse the people. But the LORD turns every attempted curse into a blessing.
The portion concludes with the episode of Baal-Peor and the zealous act of Pinchas. 104 verses.

| 5:7 | וְהָיָה שְׁאֵרִית יַעֲקֹב בַּגּוֹיִם | Ve-ha-yah she-e-rit Ya-a-kov ba-go-yim be-ke-rev am-mim rab-bim ke-ar-yeh be-vhe-mot ya-ar, kikh-fir be-ed-rey tzon, a-sher im a-var ve-ra-mas ve-ta-raf ve-eyn mat-tzil. | The remnant of Jacob shall be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, like a lion among the beasts of the forest, like a young lion among flocks of sheep, which treads down and tears apart with none to rescue. |
| 5:8 | תָּרֹם יָדְךָ עַל צָרֶיךָ | Ta-rom ya-de-kha al tza-re-kha ve-khol oy-ve-kha yi-ka-rey-tu. | Your hand shall be raised against your adversaries and all your enemies shall be cut off. |
| 5:9 | וְהָיָה בַיּוֹם הַהוּא נְאֻם יְהוָה | ve-ha-yah va-yom ha-hu ne-um the LORD ve-hikh-ra-ti su-se-kha mi-kir-be-kha ve-ha-a-vad-ti mar-ke-vo-te-kha. | On that day — declares the LORD — I will cut off your horses from your midst and destroy your chariots. |
| 5:10 | וְהִכְרַתִּי עָרֵי אַרְצֶךָ | Ve-hikh-ra-ti a-rey ar-tze-kha ve-ha-ras-ti kol miv-tza-re-kha. | I will cut off the cities of your land and demolish all your strongholds. |
| 5:11 | וְהִכְרַתִּי כְשָׁפִים מִיָּדֶךָ | Ve-hikh-ra-ti khe-sha-fim mi-ya-de-kha u-me-o-ne-nim lo yi-he-yu lakh. | I will cut off sorceries from your hand and you shall have no more soothsayers. |
| 5:12 | וְהִכְרַתִּי פְסִילֶיךָ | Ve-hikh-ra-ti fe-si-le-kha u-ma-tzey-vo-te-kha mi-kir-be-kha ve-lo tish-ta-kha-veh od le-ma-a-seh ya-de-kha. | I will cut off your idols and your pillars from your midst, and you shall no longer bow to the work of your hands. |
| 5:13 | וְנָתַשְׁתִּי אֲשֵׁירֶיךָ מִקִּרְבֶּךָ | Ve-na-tash-ti a-she-rey-kha mi-kir-be-kha ve-hish-ma-de-ti a-re-kha. | I will uproot your Asherah-poles from your midst and destroy your cities. |
| 5:14 | וְעָשִׂיתִי בְּאַף וּבְחֵמָה נָקָם | Ve-a-si-ti be-af u-ve-khey-mah na-kam eyt ha-go-yim a-sher lo sha-mey-u. | I will execute vengeance in anger and fury upon the nations that did not obey. |
| 6:1 | שִׁמְעוּ נָא אֵת אֲשֶׁר יְהוָה אֹמֵר | Shim-u na eyt a-sher the LORD o-meyr: "Kum riv eyt he-ha-rim ve-tish-ma-nah ha-ge-va-ot ko-le-kha." | Hear now what the LORD is saying: "Arise, plead your case before the mountains; let the hills hear your voice." |
| 6:2 | שִׁמְעוּ הָרִים אֶת רִיב יְהוָה | "Shim-u ha-rim eyt riv the LORD ve-ha-ey-ta-nim mos-dey a-retz; ki riv la-the LORD im am-mo ve-im Yis-ra-eyl yit-vak-kakh." | "Hear, O mountains, the LORD’s grievance; and you, enduring foundations of the earth — for the LORD has a grievance against His people, and He will contend with Israel." |
| 6:3 | עַמִּי מֶה עָשִׂיתִי לְךָ | "Am-mi meh a-si-ti le-kha u-mah hel-ey-ti-kha; a-neh vi!" | "My people, what have I done to you and how have I wearied you? Testify against Me!" |
| 6:4 | כִּי הֶעֱלִיתִיךָ מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם | "Ki he-e-li-ti-kha mey-e-retz Mitz-ra-yim u-mi-beyt a-va-dim pe-di-ti-kha; va-esh-lakh le-fa-ne-kha eyt Mo-sheh A-ha-ron u-Mir-yam." | "For I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery; I sent before you Moses, Aaron and Miriam." |
| 6:5 | עַמִּי זְכָר נָא מַה יָּעַץ בָּלָק | "Am-mi ze-khor na mah ya-atz Va-lak me-lekh Mo-av u-mah a-nah o-to Bil-am ben Be-or min ha-Shit-tim ad ha-Gil-gal, le-ma-an da-at tzid-kot the LORD." | "My people, remember what Balak king of Moab plotted and what Balaam son of Beor answered him — from Shittim to Gilgal — so that you may know the righteous acts of the LORD." |
| 6:6 | בַּמָּה אֲקַדֵּם יְהוָה | "Ba-mah a-ka-dem the LORD ik-kaf le-E-lo-hey ma-rom? Ha-a-ka-de-me-nu ve-o-lot be-a-ga-lim be-ney sha-nah?" | "With what shall I approach the LORD and bow before the God on high? Shall I approach Him with burnt-offerings, with yearling calves?" |
| 6:7 | הֲיִרְצֶה יְהוָה בְּאַלְפֵי אֵילִים | "Ha-yir-tzeh the LORD be-al-fey ey-lim be-ri-ve-vot na-kha-ley sha-men? Ha-et-teyn be-kho-ri fish-i pe-ri vit-ni kha-tat naf-shi?" | "Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?" |
| 6:8 | הִגִּיד לְךָ אָדָם מַה טּוֹב | "Hig-gid le-kha a-dam mah tov u-mah the LORD do-resh mim-me-kha: ki im a-sot mish-pat ve-a-ha-vat khe-sed ve-hatz-ne-a le-khet im E-lo-he-kha." | "He has told you, O man, what is good; and what the LORD requires of you: only to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God." |
