But if I say thus to the young man: Behold, the arrows are beyond you — go your way, for the LORD has sent you away.
And concerning the matter which you and I have spoken of, behold, the LORD is between you and me forever.
So David hid himself in the field. And when the New Moon had come, the king sat down to eat food.
The king sat on his seat as at other times, on the seat by the wall; Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul’s side, but David’s place was empty.
20:26 וְלֹא־דִבֶּ֥ר שָׁא֛וּל מְא֖וּמָה בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא כִּ֤י אָמַר֙ מִקְרֶ֣ה ה֔וּא בִּלְתִּ֥י טָה֖וֹר הֽוּא כִּי־לֹ֥א טָהֽוֹר׃ Velo diber Shaul me’umah bayom hahu, ki amar: Mikreh hu, bilti tahor hu, ki-lo tahor. Nevertheless Saul did not say anything that day, for he thought: Something has happened to him; he is not clean, surely he is not clean.
And it came to pass on the next day, the second day of the month, that David’s place was empty; and Saul said to Jonathan his son: Why has the son of Jesse not come to the meal either yesterday or today?
Vaya’an Yehonatan et-Shaul: Nish’ol nish’al David me’imadi ad-Beit Lechem. Jonathan answered Saul: David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem.
20:29 וַיֹּ֡אמֶר שַׁלְּחֵ֣נִי נָּ֠א כִּ֣י זֶֽבַח־מִשְׁפָּחָ֥ה לָ֙נוּ֙ בָּעִ֔יר וְה֥וּא צִוָּה־לִ֖י אָחִ֑י וְעַתָּ֗ה אִם־מָצָ֤אתִי חֵן֙ בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ אִמָּֽלְטָה־נָּא֙ וְאֶרְאֶ֣ה אֶת־אֶחָ֔י עַל־כֵּ֥ן לֹא־בָ֖א אֶל־שֻׁלְחַ֥ן הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ Vayomer: Shallecheni na, ki zevach mishpachah lanu ba’ir vehu tzivah-li achi; ve’atah im-matzati chen be’einecha immaltah-na ve’er’eh et-echai; al-ken lo-va el-shulchan hamelech. And he said: Please let me go, for our family has a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there. Now if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me escape and see my brothers. Therefore he has not come to the king’s table.
Halo yadati ki-vocher atah leven-Yishai, levoshtecha ulevoshet ervat immecha? Then Saul’s anger burned against Jonathan, and he said to him: You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness?
For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established. Therefore now send and bring him to me, for he must surely die.
Vaya’an Yehonatan et-Shaul aviv vayomer elav: Lamah yumat? Meh asah? And Jonathan answered Saul his father and said to him: Why should he be put to death? What has he done?
20:33 וַיָּ֨טֶל שָׁא֧וּל אֶת־הַחֲנִ֛ית עָלָ֖יו לְהַכֹּת֑וֹ וַיֵּ֣דַע יְהוֹנָתָ֔ן כִּֽי־כָלָ֥ה הִ֛יא מֵעִ֥ם אָבִ֖יו לְהָמִ֥ית אֶת־דָּוִֽד׃ Vayatel Shaul et-hachanit alav lehakkoto; vayedah Yehonatan ki-chalah hi me’im aviv lehamit et-David. Then Saul hurled the spear at him to strike him. So Jonathan knew that it was determined by his father to put David to death.
20:34 וַיָּ֨קָם יְהוֹנָתָ֜ן מֵעִ֤ם הַשֻּׁלְחָן֙ בָּחֳרִי־אָ֔ף וְלֹא־אָכַ֥ל בְּיֽוֹם־הַחֹ֖דֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִ֣י לֶ֑חֶם כִּ֣י נֶעְצַ֔ב אֶל־דָּוִ֖ד כִּ֥י הִכְלִמֽוֹ אָבִֽיו׃ Vayakom Yehonatan me’im hashulchan bachori-af, velo-achal beyom-hachodesh hasheni lechem, ki ne’etzav el-David ki hichlimo aviv. So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month; for he was grieved for David, because his father had disgraced him.
And it came to pass in the morning that Jonathan went out into the field at the appointed time with David, and a little boy was with him.
Vehana’ar ratz, vehu yarah hachetzi leha’aviro. Then he said to his boy: Run, find now the arrows which I shoot. As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.
When the boy came to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried out after the boy and said: Is not the arrow beyond you?
Vayelaket na’ar Yehonatan et-hachitzim vayavo el-adonav. And Jonathan cried after the boy: Hurry, make haste, do not delay! So Jonathan’s boy gathered up the arrows and came to his master.
Vehana’ar lo yada me’umah; ach Yehonatan veDavid yad’u et-hadavar. But the boy knew nothing; only Jonathan and David knew the matter.
20:40 וַיִּתֵּ֤ן יְהוֹנָתָן֙ אֶת־כֵּלָ֔יו אֶל־הַנַּ֖עַר אֲשֶׁ֣ר ל֑וֹ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ לֵ֖ךְ הָבֵ֥א הָעִֽיר׃ Vayiten Yehonatan et-kelav el-hana’ar asher lo, vayomer lo: Lech have ha’ir. Then Jonathan gave his weapons to the boy and said to him: Go, carry them to the city.
20:41 הַנַּ֣עַר בָּ֔א וְדָוִ֗ד קָ֚ם מֵאֵ֣צֶל הַנֶּ֔גֶב וַיִּפֹּ֥ל לְאַפָּ֖יו אַ֣רְצָה וַיִּשְׁתַּ֑חוּ שָׁלֹ֣שׁ פְּעָמִ֗ים וַיִּשְּׁק֤וּ אִישׁ֙ אֶת־רֵעֵ֔הוּ וַיִּבְכּ֖וּ אִישׁ־אֶת־רֵעֵ֑הוּ עַ֥ד דָּוִ֖ד הִגְדִּֽיל׃ Hana’ar ba, veDavid kam me’etzel hanegev vayipol le’apav artzah vayishtachu shalosh pe’amim; vayishku ish et-re’ehu vayivku ish et-re’ehu ad-David higdil. As soon as the boy had gone, David arose from beside the south side and fell on his face to the ground and bowed three times. And they kissed one another and wept with one another, until David exceeded.
Vayakom vayelech, viYehonatan ba ha’ir. Then Jonathan said to David: Go in peace, since we have both sworn in the name of the LORD, saying: May the LORD be between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants forever. So he arose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.
