vaydabeir Adonoy el mosheh v'el aharon leimor
And the Eternal spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying:
2
zos chukas hatoroh asher tzivoh Adonoy leimor dabeir el b'nei yisroeil v'yikchu eilecho poroh adumoh t'mimoh asher ein boh mum asher lo oloh oleho ol
This is the statute of the law which the Eternal hath commanded, saying: Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer, faultless, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke.
3
unsatem osoh el elozor hakohein v'hotzi osoh el michutz lamachaneh v'shochat osoh l'fonov
And ye shall give her unto Eleazar the priest, and she shall be brought forth without the camp, and she shall be slain before his face.
4
v'lokach elozor hakohein midomoh b'etzbo'o v'hizoh el nochach p'nei ohel mo'eid midomoh sheva p'omim
And Eleazar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her blood toward the front of the tent of meeting seven times.
5
And the heifer shall be burnt in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall be burnt.
6
v'lokach hakohein eitz erez v'eizov ushni toloas v'hishlich el toch s'reifas haporoh
And the priest shall take cedar-wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer.
7
v'chibes b'godov hakohein v'rochatz b'soro bamayim v'achar yovo el hamachaneh v'tomei hakohein ad hoorev
Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he may come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the even.
8
v'hasoreif osoh y'chabeis b'godov bamayim v'rochatz b'soro bamoyim v'tomei ad hoorev
And he that burneth her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even.
9
v'osaf ish tohor eis eifer haporoh v'hinicha michutz lamachaneh b'mokom tohor v'hoysoh la'adas b'nei yisroeil l'mishmeres l'mei nidoh chatos hiv
And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of sprinkling; it is a purification from sin.
10
v'chibes hooseif es eifer haporoh es b'godov v'tomei ad hoorev v'hoysoh livnei yisroeil v'lageir hagor b'sochom l'chukas olom
And he that gathereth the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even; and it shall be unto the children of Israel, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among them, for a statute for ever.
11

He that toucheth the dead, even any man’s dead body, shall be unclean seven days;

the same shall purify himself therewith on the third day and on the seventh day, and he shall be clean; but if he purify not himself the third day and the seventh day, he shall not be clean.
13

Whosoever toucheth the dead, even the body of any man that is dead, and purifieth not himself—he hath defiled the tabernacle of the Eternal—that soul shall be cut off from Israel; because the water of sprinkling was not dashed against him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him.
14
zos hatoroh odom ki yomus b'ohel kol habo el ho'ohel v'chol asher boohel yitmo shivas yomim
This is the law: when a man dieth in a tent, every one that cometh into the tent, and every thing that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.
15

And every open vessel, which hath no covering close-bound upon it, is unclean.

And whosoever in the open field toucheth one that is slain with a sword, or one that dieth of himself, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.
17

And for the unclean they shall take of the ashes of the burning of the purification from sin, and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel.

’Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water; and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock; so thou shalt give the congregation and their cattle drink.’
9

’Let me pass through thy land; we will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink of the water of the wells; we will go by the king’s highway, until we have passed thy border.’
23

And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.
25

v'yiftoch hagilodi hoyoh gibor chayil v'hu ben ishoh zonoh vayoled gilod es yiftoch
Now Yiftah the Gil'adite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of a harlot: and Gil'ad begot Yiftah.

And Gil'ad’s wife bore him sons; and his wife’s sons grew up, and they drove out Yiftah, and said to him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.
3

Then Yiftah fled from his brothers, and dwelt in the land of Tov: and idle fellows joined themselves to Yiftah, and went out with him.
4

And it came to pass in the course of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Yisra'el.
5

And when the children of Ammon made war against Yisra'el, the elders of Gil'ad went to fetch Yiftah out of the land of Tov:

vayomru ziknei gilod el yiftoch lochein atoh shavnu eilecho v'holachto imonu v'nilchamto bivnei amon v'hoyiso lonu l'rosh l'chol yoshvei gilod
And the elders of Gil'ad said to Yiftah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayst go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gil'ad.
9
vayomer yiftoch el ziknei gilod im m'shivim atem osi l'hilocheim bivnei amon v'nosan Adonoy osom l'fono onochi ehyeh lochem l'rosh
And Yiftah said to the elders of Gil'ad, If you bring me back home to fight against the children of Ammon, and the Eternal deliver them before me, shall I be your head?
10
vayomru ziknei gilod el yiftoch Adonoy yihyeh shomeia beinoseinu im lo kidvorcho kein naaseh
And the elders of Gil'ad said to Yiftah, The the Eternal is witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.
11
vayeilech yiftoch im ziknei gilod vayosimu ho'om oso aleihem l'rosh ulkotzin vaydabeir yiftoch es kol d'vorov lifnei Adonoy bamitzpoh
Then Yiftah went with the elders of Gil'ad, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Yiftah uttered all his words before the Eternal in Mitzpe.
12
vayishlach yiftoch malochim el melech b'nei amon leimor mah li voloch ki boso eila l'hilocheim b'artzi
And Yiftah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?
13
vayomer melech b'nei amon el malachei yiftoch ki lokach yisroeil es artzi baaloso mimitzrayim meiarnon v'ad hayabok v'ad hayardein v'atoh hoshivoh eshen b'sholom
And the king of the children of Ammon answered the messengers of Yiftah, Because Yisra'el took away my land, when they came up out of Mitzrayim, from Arnon as far as the Yabboq, and the Yarden: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.
14
vayosef od yiftoch vayishlach malochim el melech b'nei amon
And Yiftah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon:
15
and said to him, Thus says Yiftah, Yisra'el did not take away the land of Mo'av, nor the land of the children of Ammon:
16
ki baalosom mimitzroyim vayeilech yisroeil bamidbor ad yam suf vayovo kodeishoh
but when Yisra'el came up from Mitzrayim, and walked through the wilderness to the Sea of Suf, and came to Qadesh;
17
vayishlach yisroeil malochim el melech edom leimor ebroh no b'artzecho v'lo shoma melech edom v'gam el melech moov sholach v'lo ovoh vayeishev yisroeil b'kodeish
then Yisra'el sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken. And in like manner they sent to the king of Mo'av: but he would not consent: and so Yisra'el remained in Qadesh.
18
vayeilech bamidbor vayosov es eretz edom v'es eretz moov vayovo mimizrach shemesh l'eretz moov vayachanun b'eiver arnon v'lo bou bigvul moov ki arnon g'vul moov
Then they went along through the wilderness, and went round the land of Edom, and the land of Mo'av, and came by the east side of the land of Mo'av, and camped on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Mo'av: for Arnon was the border of Mo'av.
19
vayishlach yisroeil malochim el sichon melech hoemori melech cheshbon vayomer lo yisroeil nabroh no b'artzcho ad m'komi
And Yisra'el sent messengers to Sihon king of the Emori, the king of Heshbon; and Yisra'el said to him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land to my place.
20
But Sihon did not trust Yisra'el to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Yahatz and fought against Yisra'el.
21
vayitein Adonoy elohei yisroeil es sichon v'es kol amo b'yad yisroeil vayakum vayirash yisroeil eis kol eretz hoemori yosheiv hooretz hahi
And the Eternal God of Yisra'el delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Yisra'el, and they smote them: so Yisra'el possessed all the land of the Emori, the inhabitants of that country.
22
vayirshu eis kol g'vul hoemori meiarnon v'ad hayabok umin hamidbor v'ad hayardein
And they possessed all the border of the Emori from Arnon even as far as Yabboq, and from the wilderness as far as the Yarden.
23
v'atoh Adonoy elohei yisroeil horish es hoemori mipnei amo yisroeil v'atoh tiroshenu
So now the Eternal God of Yisra'el has driven out the Emori from before his people Yisra'el, and shouldst thou possess their land?
24
halo eis asher yorishcho k'mosh elohecho oso tirosh v'eis kol asher horish Adonoy eloheinu miponeinu oso nirosh
Wilt not thou possess that which Kemosh thy god gives thee to possess? So likewise that which the Eternal our God has voided before us, that shall we possess.
25
v'atoh hatov tov atoh mibolok ben tzipor melech moov harov rov im yisroeil im nilchom nilcham bom
And now art thou at all better than Balaq the son of Tzippor, king of Mo'av? did he ever strive against Yisra'el, or did he ever fight against them,
26
b'sheves yisroeil b'cheshbon uvivnoseho uvaror uvivnoseho uvchol heorim asher al y'dei arnon sh'losh meios shonoh umadua lo hitzaltem boeis hahi
while Yisra'el dwelt in Heshbon and its hamlets, and in Ar'or and its hamlets, and in all the cities that are along by the shores of Arnon, for three hundred years? why did you not recover them within that time?
27
v'onochi lo chotosi loch v'atoh oseh iti rooh l'hilochem bi yishpot Adonoy hashofeit hayom bein b'nei yisroeil uvein b'nei amon
But I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the Eternal the Judge be judge this day between the children of Yisra'el and the children of Ammon.
28
Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon did not hearken to the words of Yiftah which he sent him.
29
Then the spirit of the Eternal came upon Yiftah and he passed over Gil'ad, and Menashshe, and passed over Mitzpe of Gil'ad, and from Mitzpe of Gil'ad he passed over to the children of Ammon.
30
vayidar yiftoch neder laAdonoy vayomar im noson titein es b'nei amon b'yodi
And Yiftah vowed a vow to the Eternal, and said, If Thou shalt deliver the children of Ammon into my hands,
31
v'hoyoh hayotzei asher yeitzei midalsei beisi likrosi b'shuvi b'sholom mibnei amon v'hoyoh laAdonoy v'haalisihu oloh
then whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the Eternal’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
32
vayaavor yiftoch el b'nei amon l'hilochem bom vayitneim Adonoy b'yodo
So Yiftah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them: and the Eternal delivered them into his hands.
33
And he smote them from Aro'er, as far as Minnit, twenty cities, and as far as Avel-keramim, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Yisra'el.
