Aliyá 2 — Numbers 13:21–14:7

Verse Hebrew Transliteration English
Vaya'alú vayatúru et-ha'árets mimidbar-Tzin ad-Rejób levó Jamát. So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, at the entrance of Hamath.
VeJevrón sheva saním nivnetá lifné Tzó'an Mitzráyim. And they went up into the South, and came unto Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.
And they came unto the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it upon a pole between two; they brought also of the pomegranates, and of the figs.
That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from thence.
Vayashúvu mittúr ha'árets mikétz arba'ím yom. And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.
And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.
And they told him, and said: We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
13:28 אֶפֶס כִּי־עַז הָעָם הַיֹּשֵׁב בָּאָרֶץ וְהֶעָרִים בְּצֻרוֹת גְּדֹלֹת מְאֹד וְגַם־יְלִידֵי הָעֲנָק רָאִינוּ שָׁם׃ Éfes ki-az ha'ám hayoshév ba'árets, vehe'arím betzurót gedolót me'od; vegam-yelidé ha'Anák ra'ínu sham. Howbeit the people that dwell in the land are fierce, and the cities are fortified, and very great; and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.
13:29 עֲמָלֵק יוֹשֵׁב בְּאֶרֶץ הַנֶּגֶב וְהַחִתִּי וְהַיְבוּסִי וְהָאֱמֹרִי יוֹשֵׁב בָּהָר וְהַכְּנַעֲנִי יוֹשֵׁב עַל־הַיָּם וְעַל יַד הַיַּרְדֵּן׃ Amalék yoshév be'érets hannéguev; vehajití vehayevusí veha'emorí yoshév bahár; vehakena'aní yoshév al-hayám ve'al yad hayardén. Amalek dwelleth in the land of the South; and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanite dwelleth by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan.
And Caleb stilled the people toward Moses, and said: We should go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.
But the men that went up with him said: We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.
And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying: The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature.
And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim; and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
Vatissá kol-ha'edá vayitnú et-kolám, vayivkú ha'ám ballaylá hahú. And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
14:2 וַיִּלֹּנוּ עַל־מֹשֶׁה וְעַל־אַהֲרֹן כֹּל בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֲלֵהֶם כָּל־הָעֵדָה לוּ מַתְנוּ בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם אוֹ בַּמִּדְבָּר הַזֶּה לוּ מַתְנוּ׃ Vayilónu al-Moshé ve'al-Aharón kol benei Yisraél, vayómeru alehém kol-ha'edá: Lu mátnu be'érets Mitzráyim, o bammidbár hazé lu mátnu. And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and the whole congregation said unto them: Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would that we had died in this wilderness!
Halo tov lánu shuv Mitzráyma. And wherefore doth The Eternal bring us unto this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey; were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
Vayómeru ish el-ajív: Nittena rosh venashúva Mitzráyma. And they said one to another: Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
Vayipól Moshé veAharón al-peneihém lifné kol-kehál adat benei-Yisraél. Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of them that spied out the land, rent their clothes.
14:7 וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֶל־כָּל־עֲדַת בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל לֵאמֹר הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר עָבַרְנוּ בָהּ לָתוּר אֹתָהּ טוֹבָה הָאָרֶץ מְאֹד מְאֹד׃ Vayómeru el-kol-adat benei-Yisraél lemór: Ha'árets asher avarnu bah latúr otáh, tová ha'árets me'ód me'ód. And they spoke unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: The land, through which we passed to spy it out, is an exceeding good land.

Yehoshua and Kalev urge the people to trust Hashem. The people rebel, and Moshe intercedes so that Israel will not be destroyed.

Aliyá 3 — Numbers 14:8–25

Verse Hebrew Transliteration English
If The Eternal delight in us, then He will bring us into this land, and give it unto us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
14:9 אַךְ בַּיהוָה אַל־תִּמְרֹדוּ וְאַתֶּם אַל־תִּירְאוּ אֶת־עַם הָאָרֶץ כִּי לַחְמֵנוּ הֵם סָר צִלָּם מֵעֲלֵיהֶם וַיהוָה אִתָּנוּ אַל־תִּירָאֻם׃ Aj bAdonai al-timródú; veattém al-tir'ú et-am ha'árets, ki lajmenú hem; sar tzilám me'aleihém, vAdonai ittánu; al-tir'úm. Only rebel not against The Eternal, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is removed from over them, and The Eternal is with us: fear them not.
But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of The Eternal appeared in the tent of meeting unto all the children of Israel.
And The Eternal said unto Moses: How long will this people despise Me? and how long will they not believe in Me, for all the signs which I have wrought among them?
I will smite them with the pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.
14:13 וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה אֶל־יְהוָה וְשָׁמְעוּ מִצְרַיִם כִּי־הֶעֱלִיתָ בְכֹחֲךָ אֶת־הָעָם הַזֶּה מִקִּרְבּוֹ׃ Vayómer Moshé el-Adonai: Veshame'ú Mitzráyim, ki-he'elíta vejojajá et-ha'ám hazé mikirbó. And Moses said unto The Eternal: Then the Egyptians will hear it—for Thou broughtest up this people in Thy might from among them—
14:14 וְאָמְרוּ אֶל־יוֹשֵׁב הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת שָׁמְעוּ כִּי־אַתָּה יְהוָה בְּקֶרֶב הָעָם הַזֶּה אֲשֶׁר־עַיִן בְּעַיִן נִרְאָה אַתָּה יְהוָה וַעֲנָנְךָ עֹמֵד עֲלֵהֶם וּבְעַמֻּד עָנָן אַתָּה הֹלֵךְ לִפְנֵיהֶם יוֹמָם וּבְעַמּוּד אֵשׁ לָיְלָה׃ Ve'amerú el-yoshév ha'árets hazzot, shame'ú ki-attá Adonai bekérev ha'ám hazé, asher áyin be'áyin nir'á attá Adonai, va'anan'ja oméd aleihém, ube'ammúd anán attá holéj lifneihém yomám, ube'ammúd esh laylá. and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land; they have heard that Thou, O Eternal, art in the midst of this people; for Thou, O Eternal, art seen face to face, and Thy cloud standeth over them, and Thou goest before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.
14:15 וְהֵמַתָּה אֶת־הָעָם הַזֶּה כְּאִישׁ אֶחָד וְאָמְרוּ הַגּוֹיִם אֲשֶׁר־שָׁמְעוּ אֶת־שִׁמְעֲךָ לֵאמֹר׃ Vehemátta et-ha'ám hazé ke'ish ejád; ve'amerú hagóyim asher-shame'ú et-shim'ajá lemór: Now if Thou shalt kill this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of Thee will speak, saying:
Because The Eternal was not able to bring this people into the land which He swore unto them, therefore He hath slain them in the wilderness.
Ve'atá yigdal-na kóaj Adonai, ka'asher dibárta lemór: And now, I pray Thee, let the power of The Eternal be great, according as Thou hast spoken, saying:
The Eternal is slow to anger, and plenteous in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation.
Pardon, I pray Thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of Thy lovingkindness, and according as Thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
Vayómer Adonai: Salájti kidvaréká. And The Eternal said: I have pardoned according to thy word.

How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that murmur against Me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against Me.
14:28 אֱמֹר אֲלֵהֶם חַי־אָנִי נְאֻם־יְהוָה אִם־לֹא כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתֶּם בְּאָזְנָי כֵּן אֶעֱשֶׂה לָכֶם׃ Emór alehém: Jai-aní ne'úm-Adonai, im-lo ka'ashér dibártem be'oznái, ken e'esé lajem. Say unto them: As I live, saith The Eternal, surely as ye have spoken in Mine ears, so will I do to you.

Your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, that have murmured against Me.

Surely ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I lifted up My hand that I would make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
14:31 וְטַפְּכֶם אֲשֶׁר אֲמַרְתֶּם לָבַז יִהְיֶה וְהֵבֵאתִי אֹתָם וְיָדְעוּ אֶת־הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר מְאַסְתֶּם בָּהּ׃ Vetapéijem asher amártem laváz yihyé, vehevéi oti otám, veyad'ú et-ha'árets asher me'ástem bah. But your little ones, that ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have rejected.
Ufigreijém attém yippelú bammidbár hazé. But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness.

And your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your whoredoms, until your carcasses be consumed in the wilderness.
I, The Eternal, have spoken: Surely this will I do unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against Me; in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.

And the men, whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land,
14:37 וַיָּמֻתוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים הוֹצִאֵי דִבַּת־הָאָרֶץ רָעָה בַּמַּגֵּפָה לִפְנֵי יְהוָה׃ Vayamútú ha'anashím hotzi'é dibát-ha'árets ra'á, bammaguéfá lifné Adonai. even those men that did bring up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before The Eternal.
But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men that went to spy out the land.
14:39 וַיְדַבֵּר מֹשֶׁה אֶת־הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה אֶל־כָּל־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיִּתְאַבְּלוּ הָעָם מְאֹד׃ Vayedabér Moshé et-hadevarím ha'éle el-kol-benei Yisraél, vayit'ablu ha'ám me'ód. And Moses told these words unto all the children of Israel; and the people mourned greatly.
And they rose up early in the morning, and got them up to the top of the mountain, saying: Lo, we are here, and will go up unto the place which The Eternal hath promised; for we have sinned.
Vehi lo titzlaj. And Moses said: Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of The Eternal, seeing it shall not prosper?

For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and ye shall fall by the sword; forasmuch as ye are turned back from following The Eternal, therefore The Eternal will not be with you.
Ye shall have one law for him that doeth aught in error, both for him that is home-born among the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them.
But the soul that doeth aught with a high hand, whether he be home-born or a stranger, the same blasphemeth The Eternal; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
Because he hath despised the word of The Eternal, and hath broken His commandment, that soul shall be utterly cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him.
Vayihyu benei-Yisraél bammidbár, vayimtze'ú ish mekoshesh etzím beyóm Hashabát. And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks upon the sabbath day.
And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation.
Vayanníju otó bammishmár, ki lo forásh mah-ye'asé lo. And they put him in ward, because it had not been declared what should be done to him.
And The Eternal said unto Moses: The man shall be surely put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.
And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died, as The Eternal commanded Moses.
Vayedabér Adonai el-Moshé lemór. And The Eternal spoke unto Moses, saying:
And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two spies secretly, saying: Go view the land, and Jericho. And they went, and came into the house of a harlot whose name was Rahab, and lay there.
And it was told the king of Jericho, saying: Behold, there came men in hither tonight of the children of Israel to search out the land.
2:3 וַיִּשְׁלַח מֶלֶךְ יְרִיחוֹ אֶל־רָחָב לֵאמֹר הוֹצִיאִי הָאֲנָשִׁים הַבָּאִים אֵלַיִךְ אֲשֶׁר־בָּאוּ לְבֵיתֵךְ כִּי לַחְפֹּר אֶת־הָכָּל־הָאָרֶץ בָּאוּ׃ Vayishláj mélej Yerijó el-Rajáv lemór: Hotzí'i ha'anashím haba'ím eláij ashér-báu levaitéj, ki lajpór et-kol-ha'árets báu. And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying: Bring forth the men that are come to thee, that are entered into thy house; for they are come to search out all the land.
2:4 וַתִּקַּח הָאִשָּׁה אֶת־שְׁנֵי הָאֲנָשִׁים וַתִּצְפְּנוֹ וַתֹּאמֶר כֵּן בָּאוּ אֵלַי הָאֲנָשִׁים וְלֹא יָדַעְתִּי מֵאַיִן הֵמָּה׃ Vattikkáj ha'ishshá et-shenéi ha'anashím vattitzpenó; vattómer: Ken báu elái ha'anashím veló yadá'ti mé'áyin hémma. And the woman took the two men, and hid them; and she said: Yes, the men came unto me, but I knew not whence they were;
2:5 וַיְהִי הַשַּׁעַר לִסְגּוֹר בַּחֹשֶׁךְ וְהָאֲנָשִׁים יָצָאוּ לֹא יָדַעְתִּי אָנָה הָלְכוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים רִדְפוּ מַהֵר אַחֲרֵיהֶם כִּי תַשִּׂיגוּם׃ Vayhí hashá'ar lisgór bajóshej vehá'anashím yatzáu, lo yadá'ti ána halejú ha'anashím; ridfú mahér ajareihém ki thassigúm. and it came to pass about the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out; whither the men went I know not; pursue after them quickly, for ye shall overtake them.
2:6 וְהִיא הֶעֱלָתָם הַגָּגָה וַתִּטְמְנֵם בְּפִשְׁתֵּי הָעֵץ הָעֲרֻכוֹת לָהּ עַל־הַגָּג׃ Vehí he'elatám haggága vattitmeném befishtéi ha'étz ha'arujót lah al-haggág. But she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.
And the men pursued after them the way to the Jordan unto the fords; and as soon as they that pursued after them were gone out, the gate was shut.

2:10 כִּי שָׁמַעְנוּ אֵת אֲשֶׁר־הוֹבִישׁ יְהוָה אֶת־מֵי יַם־סוּף מִפְּנֵיכֶם בְּצֵאתְכֶם מִמִּצְרָיִם וַאֲשֶׁר עֲשִׂיתֶם לִשְׁנֵי מַלְכֵי הָאֱמֹרִי אֲשֶׁר בְּעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן לְסִיחֹן וּלְעוֹג אֲשֶׁר הֶחֱרַמְתֶּם אוֹתָם׃ Ki shamá'nu et ashér-hovísh Adonai et-méi Yam-Súf mipeneijém betzeitjém miMitzráyim, va'ashér asítem lishnéi maljéi ha'emorí ashér be'éver hayardén leSijón ul'Óg ashér hejeramtém otám. For we have heard how The Eternal dried up the water of the Red Sea before you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan, unto Sihon and to Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.
2:11 וַנִּשְׁמַע וַיִּמַּס לְבָבֵנוּ וְלֹא־קָמָה עוֹד רוּחַ בְּאִישׁ מִפְּנֵיכֶם כִּי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם הוּא אֱלֹהִים בַּשָּׁמַיִם מִמַּעַל וְעַל־הָאָרֶץ מִתָּחַת׃ Vannishmá vayímmas levavénu veló-káma od rúaj be'ísh mipeneijém, ki Adonai Eloheijém hú Elohím bashamáyim mimma'al ve'al-ha'árets mittájat. And as soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, neither did there remain any more spirit in any man, because of you; for The Eternal your God, He is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.
2:12 וְעַתָּה הִשָּׁבְעוּ־נָא לִי בַּיהוָה כִּי־עָשִׂיתִי עִמָּכֶם חָסֶד וַעֲשִׂיתֶם גַּם־אַתֶּם עִם־בֵּית אָבִי חֶסֶד וּנְתַתֶּם לִי אוֹת אֱמֶת׃ Ve'attá hisháv'u-ná li bAdonai, ki-asíti immajém jásed; va'asítem gam-attém im-beit aví jásed, unetattém li ot emét. Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by The Eternal, since I have dealt kindly with you, that ye also will deal kindly with my father's house, and give me a true token;

And the men said unto her: Our life for yours, if ye tell not this our business; and it shall be, when The Eternal giveth us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.
2:15 וַתּוֹרִדֵם בַּחֶבֶל בְּעַד הַחַלּוֹן כִּי בֵיתָהּ בְּקִיר הַחוֹמָה וּבַחוֹמָה הִיא יוֹשָׁבֶת׃ Vattoridém bajével be'ad jajallón; ki veitáh beqír hajomá, uvajomá hí yoshávet. Then she let them down by a cord through the window; for her house was upon the side of the wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.
And she said unto them: Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers light upon you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned; and afterward may ye go your way.
And the men said unto her: We will be guiltless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.
Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by; and thou shalt gather thy father, and your mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, into thy house.
And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless; and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.
But if thou utter this our business, then we will be guiltless of thine oath which thou hast made us swear.
Vattómer: Kedivréijem ken-hú; vatteshallejém vayyeléjú, vattíqshor et-tiqvát hashsháni bajallón. And she said: According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed; and she bound the scarlet line in the window.
And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned; and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.
Then the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun; and they told him all the things that had befallen them.

And they said unto Joshua: Truly The Eternal hath delivered into our hands all the land; and moreover all the inhabitants of the land do melt away before us.
