About this Parashah
Devarim ("Words") opens Sefer Devarim (Deuteronomy), the last of the Five Books of the Torah. Moshe, on the plains of Moav, begins his great farewell address to Israel: he reviews the forty years in the wilderness, the appointment of judges, the episode of the Meraglim (spies), and the conquest of the kingdoms of Sichon and Og. This Shabbat is called Shabbat Chazon ("Sabbath of Vision"), the last of the Three Weeks before Tisha B'Av, and its Haftarah — Isaiah 1:1-27 — is traditionally chanted with the melody of Eichah.

| 41 | וַתַּעֲנוּ וַתֹּאמְרוּ אֵלַי, חָטָאנוּ לַיהוָה--אֲנַחְנוּ נַעֲלֶה וְנִלְחַמְנוּ, כְּכֹל אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּנוּ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ; וַתַּחְגְּרוּ, אִישׁ אֶת־כְּלֵי מִלְחַמְתּוֹ, וַתָּהִינוּ, לַעֲלֹת הָהָרָה. | Vata'anu vatomeru elai, chatanu laAdonai; anachnu na'aleh vennilchamnu, kechol asher-tzivanu Adonai Elohenu; vatachgru, ish et-kele milchamto, vatahinu, la'alot haharah. | Then you answered and said to me: 'We have sinned against the Eternal; we will go up and fight, according to all that the Eternal our God commanded us.' And you girded on, each man his weapons of war, and were ready to go up into the hill country. |

| 18 | אַתָּה עֹבֵר הַיּוֹם אֶת־גְּבוּל מוֹאָב, אֶת־עָר. | Atah over hayom et-guevul Moav, et-Ar. | 'You are today crossing the border of Moav, at Ar.' |
| 19 | וְקָרַבְתָּ, מוּל בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן--אַל־תְּצֻרֵם, וְאַל־תִּתְגָּר בָּם: כִּי לֹא־אֶתֵּן מֵאֶרֶץ בְּנֵי־עַמּוֹן לְךָ, יְרֻשָּׁה--כִּי לִבְנֵי־לוֹט, נְתַתִּיהָ יְרֻשָּׁה. | Vekaravta, mul bene Amon; al-tetzurem, ve'al-titgar bam; ki lo-eten me'eretz bene-Amon lecha, yerushah; ki livne-Lot, netatiha yerushah. | And you shall approach opposite the descendants of Ammon; do not harass them, and do not engage them, for I will not give you any of the land of the descendants of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the descendants of Lot as a possession. |

| 11 | לָמָּה־לִּי רֹב־זִבְחֵיכֶם יֹאמַר יְהוָה, שָׂבַעְתִּי עֹלוֹת אֵילִים וְחֵלֶב מְרִיאִים; וְדַם פָּרִים וּכְבָשִׂים וְעַתּוּדִים, לֹא חָפָצְתִּי. | Lamah-li rov-zivchechem yomar Adonai, sava'ti olot elim vechelev meri'im; vedam parim uchvasim ve'atudim, lo chafatzti. | 'What are your many sacrifices to Me?' says the Eternal. 'I am full of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fattened animals; and I do not delight in the blood of bulls, lambs, or goats.' |
| 12 | כִּי תָבֹאוּ, לֵרָאוֹת פָּנָי--מִי־בִקֵּשׁ זֹאת מִיֶּדְכֶם, רְמֹס חֲצֵרָי. | Ki tavo'u, lera'ot panai; mi-bikesh zot miyedchem, remos chatzerai. | When you come to appear before Me, who has required this of you, to trample My courts? |
| 13 | לֹא תוֹסִיפוּ, הָבִיא מִנְחַת־שָׁוְא--קְטֹרֶת תּוֹעֵבָה הִיא, לִי; חֹדֶשׁ וְשַׁבָּת קְרֹא מִקְרָא, לֹא־אוּכַל אָוֶן וַעֲצָרָה. | Lo tosifu, havi minchat-shav; ketoret to'evah hi, li; chodesh veShabat kero mikra, lo-uchal aven va'atzarah. | Bring no more futile offerings; incense is an abomination to Me. New moon and Shabbat, the calling of assemblies — I cannot endure iniquity along with the solemn gathering. |
| 14 | חָדְשֵׁיכֶם וּמוֹעֲדֵיכֶם שָׂנְאָה נַפְשִׁי, הָיוּ עָלַי לָטֹרַח; נִלְאֵיתִי, נְשֹׂא. | Chodshechem umo'adechem san'ah nafshi, hau alai latorach; nil'eti, neso. | Your new moons and your appointed seasons My soul hates; they have become a burden to Me; I am weary of bearing them. |
| 15 | וּבְפָרִשְׂכֶם כַּפֵּיכֶם, אַעְלִים עֵינַי מִכֶּם--גַּם כִּי־תַרְבּוּ תְפִלָּה, אֵינֶנִּי שֹׁמֵעַ: יְדֵיכֶם, דָּמִים מָלֵאוּ. | Uvefarschem kapechem, a'lim enai mikem; gam ki-tarbu tefilah, eneni shomea; yedechem, damim male'u. | And when you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you; even when you multiply prayer, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood. |
| 16 | רַחֲצוּ, הִזַּכּוּ--הָסִירוּ רֹעַ מַעַלְלֵיכֶם, מִנֶּגֶד עֵינָי: חִדְלוּ, הָרֵעַ. | Rachatzu, hizaku; hasiru roa ma'alelchem, minegued enai; chidlu, hara. | Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before My eyes; cease to do evil. |
| 17 | לִמְדוּ הֵיטֵב דִּרְשׁוּ מִשְׁפָּט, אַשְּׁרוּ חָמוֹץ; שִׁפְטוּ יָתוֹם, רִיבוּ אַלְמָנָה. | Limdu hetev dirshu mishpat, ashru chamotz; shiftu yatom, rivu almanah. | Learn to do good; seek justice, correct the oppressor; defend the orphan, plead for the widow. |
| 18 | לְכוּ־נָא וְנִוָּכְחָה, יֹאמַר יְהוָה; אִם־יִהְיוּ חֲטָאֵיכֶם כַּשָּׁנִים כַּשֶּׁלֶג יַלְבִּינוּ, אִם־יַאְדִּימוּ כַתּוֹלָע כַּצֶּמֶר יִהְיוּ. | Lechu-na venivachah, yomar Adonai; im-yihyu chata'echem kashanim kasheleg yalbinu, im-ya'dimu katola katzemer yihyu. | 'Come now, and let us reason together,' says the Eternal; 'though your sins are like scarlet, they shall become white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.' |
| 19 | אִם־תֹּאבוּ, וּשְׁמַעְתֶּם--טוּב הָאָרֶץ, תֹּאכֵלוּ. | Im-tovu, ushma'tem; tuv ha'aretz, tochelu. | If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; |
| 20 | וְאִם־תְּמָאֲנוּ, וּמְרִיתֶם--חֶרֶב תְּאֻכְּלוּ, כִּי פִּי יְהוָה דִּבֵּר. | Ve'im-tema'anu, umritem; cherev te'ukelu, ki pi Adonai diber. | but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword, for the mouth of the Eternal has spoken. |
| 21 | אֵיכָה הָיְתָה לְזוֹנָה, קִרְיָה נֶאֱמָנָה; מְלֵאֲתִי מִשְׁפָּט, צֶדֶק יָלִין בָּהּ--וְעַתָּה מְרַצְּחִים. | Eichah haytah lezonah, kiryah ne'emanah; mele'ati mishpat, tzedek yalin bah; ve'atah meratzchim. | How the faithful city has become a harlot! She was full of justice; righteousness dwelt in her, but now murderers. |
| 22 | כַּסְפֵּךְ, הָיָה לְסִיגִים; סָבְאֵךְ, מָהוּל בַּמָּיִם. | Kaspech, havah lesigim; sov'ech, mahul bamayim. | Your silver has become dross, your wine mixed with water. |
| 23 | שָׂרַיִךְ סוֹרְרִים, וְחַבְרֵי גַּנָּבִים--כֻּלּוֹ אֹהֵב שֹׁחַד, וְרֹדֵף שַׁלְמֹנִים; יָתוֹם לֹא יִשְׁפֹּטוּ, וְרִיב אַלְמָנָה לֹא־יָבוֹא אֲלֵיהֶם. | Sarayich sorerim, vechavre ganavim; kulo ohev shochad, verodef shalmonim; yatom lo yishpotu, veriv almanah lo-yavo alehem. | Your princes are rebels, companions of thieves; everyone loves a bribe and chases after gifts; they do not defend the orphan, and the widow's case does not come before them. |
| 24 | לָכֵן, נְאֻם הָאָדוֹן יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת--אֲבִיר, יִשְׂרָאֵל: הוֹי אֶנָּחֵם מִצָּרַי, וְאִנָּקְמָה מֵאוֹיְבָי. | Lachen, ne'um ha'Adon Adonai Tzevaot; Avir Israel: hoy enachem mitzarai, ve'inakemah me'oyevai. | Therefore, says the Master, the Eternal of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel: 'Ah, I will be relieved of My adversaries, and I will avenge Myself on My enemies.' |
| 25 | וְאָשִׁיבָה יָדִי עָלַיִךְ, וְאֶצְרֹף כַּבֹּר סִיגָיִךְ; וְאָסִירָה, כָּל־בְּדִילָיִךְ. | Ve'ashivah yadi alayich, ve'etzrof kabor sigayich; ve'assirah, kol-bedilayich. | And I will turn My hand against you, and purge away your dross as with lye, and remove all your alloy. |
| 26 | וְאָשִׁיבָה שֹׁפְטַיִךְ כְּבָרִאשֹׁנָה, וְיֹעֲצַיִךְ כְּבַתְּחִלָּה; אַחֲרֵי־כֵן, יִקָּרֵא לָךְ עִיר הַצֶּדֶק--קִרְיָה, נֶאֱמָנָה. | Ve'ashivah shoftayich kevarishonah, veyo'atzayich kevatchilah; achare-chen, yikare lach ir hatzedek; kiryah, ne'emanah. | And I will restore your judges as at first, and your counselors as at the beginning; afterward you shall be called the City of Justice, the Faithful City. |
| 27 | צִיּוֹן, בְּמִשְׁפָּט תִּפָּדֶה; וְשָׁבֶיהָ, בִּצְדָקָה. | Tzion, bemishpat tipadeh; veshaveha, bitzdakah. | Tsion shall be redeemed with justice, and those who return to her, with righteousness. |
