Haftarah Beshalach - Part 1 (Judges 4:4 - 4:24)
4:4
Udeboráh ishá nebiáh éshet Lappidót, hi shoftáh et-Yisraél baét hahí.
Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, she judged Israel at that time.
4:5
Vehí yoshébet tájat-tómer Deboráh ben Ramáh ubén Bet-El behár Efráyim; vayiaalú eléha bené Yisraél lammishpát.
And she sat under the palm-tree of Deborah between Ramah and Beth-el in the hill-country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.
4:6
Vattishláj vattiqrá leBaráq ben-Abinóam miQqédesh Naftalí, vattómer eláv: Haló tsivváh Adonai Elohé-Yisraél, lej umashajtá behár Tabór, velaqajtá immejá aséret alapím ish mibené Naftalí umibené Zebulún.
And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said unto him: 'Hath not Adonai, the Elohim of Israel, commanded, saying: Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun?
4:7
Umashajtí eléja el-nájal Qishón et-Sísara sar-tsebá Yabín veét-rijbó veét-hamonó, unetattíhu beyadéja.
And I will draw unto thee, to the brook Kishon, Sisera, the captain of Jabin's army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thy hand.'
4:8
Vayyómer eléha Baráq: Im-teljí immí vehalájtí; veím-lo teljí immí, lo eléj.
And Barak said unto her: 'If thou wilt go with me, then I will go; but if thou wilt not go with me, I will not go.'
4:9
Vattómer halój eléj immáj, éfes ki lo tihyéh tifartéja al-haddérej ashér attáh holéj, ki beyád-isháh yimkór The Eternal et-Sísara. Vattáqam Deboráh vattélej im-Baráq Qédshah.
And she said: 'I will surely go with thee; notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for The Eternal will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.' And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.
4:10
Vayyazéq Baráq et-Zebulún veét-Naftalí Qédshah, vayyáal beraglav aséret alfé ish; vattáal immó Deboráh.
And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali together to Kedesh; and there went up ten thousand men at his feet; and Deborah went up with him.
4:11
VeJéber haqQení nifrád miQqáyin mibené Jobáb jotén Moshéh, vayyét ohaló ad-Elón beTsaananním ashér et-Qédesh.
Now Heber the Kenite had severed himself from the Kenites, even from the children of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far as Elon-bezaanannim, which is by Kedesh.
4:12
Vayyaggídu leSísara ki aláh Baráq ben-Abinóam har-Tabór.
And they told Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor.
4:13
Vayyazéq Sísara et-kol-rijbó teshá meót réjeb barzél, veét-kol-haám ashér ittó meJaróshet Hagoyím el-nájal Qishón.
And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth-goiim, unto the brook Kishon.
4:14
Vattómer Deboráh el-Baráq: Qum, ki zeh hayyóm ashér natán The Eternal et-Sísara beyadéja. Haló Adonai yatsá lefanéja. Vayyéred Baráq mehár Tabór, vaaséret alapím ish ajarav.
And Deborah said unto Barak: 'Up; for this is the day in which The Eternal hath delivered Sisera into thy hand; is not Adonai gone out before thee?' So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.
4:15
Vayyáhom The Eternal et-Sísara veét-kol-haréjeb veét-kol-hammajanéh lefi-jéreb lifné Baráq; vayyéred Sísara meál hammerkabáh vayyános beraglav.
And The Eternal discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera lighted down from his chariot, and fled away on his feet.
4:16
UBaráq radáf ajeré haréjeb veajeré hammajanéh ad Jaróshet Hagoyím; vayyippól kol-majanéh Sísara lefi-jéreb lo nishár ad-ejád.
But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth-goiim; and all the host of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; there was not left so much as one.
4:17
veSísara nas beraglav el-óhel Yaél éshet Jéber haqQení; ki shalóm ben Yabín mélej-Jatsór ubén bet Jéber haqQení.
Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.
4:18
Vattettsé Yaél liqrat Sísara, vattómer eláv: Suráh adoní, suráh eláy, al-tirá. Vayyásar eléha haóhelah, vattejasséhu bassemíjah.
And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him: 'Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not.' And he turned in unto her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug.
4:19
Vayyómer eléha: Hashqíni-na meat-máyim ki tsaméti. Vattiftáj et-nod hejaláb vattashqéhu vattejasséhu.
And he said unto her: 'Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty.' And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him.
4:20
Vayyómer eléha: Amód pétaj haóhel, vehayáh im-ish yabó ushealéj veamár: Hayésh-poh ish? veamárt: Áyin.
And he said unto her: 'Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man doth come and inquire of thee, and say: Is there any man here? that thou shalt say: No.'
4:21
Vattiqqáj Yaél éshet-Jéber et-yatád haóhel, vattásem et-hammaqqébet beyadáh, vattabó eláv ballát, vattitqá et-hayyatéd beraqqató, vattitsnáj baárets; vehú-nirdám vayyáaf vayyamót.
Then Jael Heber's wife took a tent-pin, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the pin into his temples, and it pierced through into the ground; for he was in a deep sleep; so he swooned and died.
4:22
Vehinnéh Baráq rodéf et-Sísara, vattettsé Yaél liqrató vattómer lo: Lej vearéja et-haísh ashér-attáh mebaqqésh. Vayyabó eléha vehinnéh Sísara nofél met, vehayyatéd beraqqató.
And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him: 'Come, and I will show thee the man whom thou seekest.' And he came unto her; and, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the tent-pin was in his temples.
4:23
Vayyajná Elohím bayyóm hahú et Yabín mélej-Kenáan lifné bené Yisraél.
So Elohim subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel.
4:24
Vattélej yad bené-Yisraél halój veqasháh al Yabín mélej-Kenáan, ad ashér hijrítu et Yabín mélej-Kenáan.
And the hand of the children of Israel prevailed more and more against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.
5:1
Vattáshar Deboráh uBaráq ben-Abinóam bayyóm hahú lemór.
Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying:
5:2
Bifróa peráot beYisraél, behitnaddéb am, barejú The Eternal.
When men let grow their hair in Israel, when the people offer themselves willingly, bless ye The Eternal.
5:3
Shimú melajím, haazínu rozním; anojí l’Adonai, anojí ashírah, azammér l’Hashem Elohé Yisraél.
Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, even I, will sing unto Adonai; I will sing praise to Hashem, the Elohim of Israel.
5:4
Hashem, betsetejá miSseír betsadtejá missedéh Edóm, érets raáshah, gam-shamáyim natáfu, gam-abím natfú máyim.
Hashem, when Thou wentest forth out of Seir, when Thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, the heavens also dropped, yea, the clouds dropped water.
5:5
Harím nazelú mippené Adonai, zeh Sináy, mippené Hashem Elohé Yisraél.
The mountains quaked at the presence of Adonai, even yon Sinai at the presence of Hashem, the Elohim of Israel.
5:6
Bimé Shamgár ben-Anát, bimé Yaél, jadelú orajót; veholjé netibót yélejú orajót aqalqallót.
In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways ceased, and the travellers walked through byways.
5:7
Jadelú ferazón beYisraél jadéllu, ad shaqqámti Deboráh, shaqqámti em beYisraél.
The rulers ceased in Israel, they ceased, until that I arose, Deborah, that I arose a mother in Israel.
5:8
Yibjár Elohím jadashím, az lajém shearím; magén im-yerahéh varómaj bearbaím élef beYisraél.
They chose new gods; then was war in the gates; was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?
5:9
Libbí lejofqé Yisraél, hammitnaddébím baám, barejú The Eternal.
My heart is toward the governors of Israel, that offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless ye The Eternal.
5:10
Rojbé atonót tsejorót, yoshbé al-middín veholjé al-dérej sijú.
Ye that ride on white asses, ye that sit on rich carpets, and ye that walk by the way, tell of it.
5:11
Miqqól mejatsitsím ben mashabbím, sham yetannú tsidqót Adonai, tsidqót firzonó beYisraél; az yaredú lasshearím am-Hashem.
Louder than the voice of archers, by the watering-places! There shall they rehearse the righteous acts of Adonai, even the righteous acts of His rulers in Israel. Then the people of Hashem went down to the gates.
5:12
Urí urí Deboráh, urí urí dabbéri-shir; qum Baráq ushbé shebyejá ben-Abinóam.
Awake, awake, Deborah; awake, awake, utter a song; arise, Barak, and lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam.
5:13
Az yerád saríd leaddirím am Hashem yerád-li baggiborím.
Then made He a remnant to have dominion over the nobles and the people; The Eternal made me have dominion over the mighty.
5:14
Mínni Efráyim sharshám baAmaléq, ajaréja Biniamín baamaméja; mínni Majír yaredú mejóqqím, umizZebulún moshjím beshébet sofér.
Out of Ephraim came they whose root is in Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy peoples; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zebulun they that handle the marshal's staff.
5:15
Vesaráy beYissashjár im-Deboráh, veYissashjár ken Baráq baémeq shulláj beraglav. Biflagót Reubén gedolím jiqqé-leb.
And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; as Issachar, so was Barak; into the valley they rushed forth at his feet. Among the divisions of Reuben there were great resolves of heart.
5:16
Lámmah yashábta ben hammishpetáyim lishmóa shriqót adarím? Liflagót Reubén gedolím jiqré-leb.
Why sattest thou among the sheepfolds, to hear the pipings for the flocks? At the divisions of Reuben there were great searchings of heart.
5:17
Guilád beéber hayYardén shakén; veDán lámmah yagúr oniyyót? Ashér yasháb lejof yammím, veal mifratsáv yishkón.
Gilead abode beyond the Jordan; and Dan, why doth he sojourn by the ships? Asher dwelt at the shore of the sea, and abideth by its bays.
5:18
Zebulún am jeréf nafshó lamút, veNaftalí al meromé sadéh.
Zebulun is a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death, and Naphtali, upon the high places of the field.
5:19
Baú melajím niljámu, az niljamú maljé Jenáan beTaanáj al-me Megidó; bétsa késef lo laqáju.
The kings came, they fought; then fought the kings of Canaan, in Taanach by the waters of Megiddo; they took no gain of money.
5:20
Min-shamáyim niljámu, hakkojabím mimmessillótam niljamú im-Sísara.
They fought from heaven, the stars in their courses fought against Sisera.
5:21
Nájal Qishón guerafám, nájal qedumím, nájal Qishón. Tidrejí nafshí oz.
The brook Kishon swept them away, that ancient brook, the brook Kishon. O my soul, tread them down with strength.
5:22
Az halemú iqqebé-sus middaharót daharót abbiráv.
Then did the horsehoofs stamp by reason of the prancings, the prancings of their mighty ones.
5:23
Óru Meróz, amár maláj The Eternal; óru arór yoshebéha, ki lo-baú leezrát Adonai, leezrát Hashem baggiborím.
'Curse ye Meroz', said the messenger of The Eternal, 'Curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof, because they came not to the help of Adonai, to the help of Hashem against the mighty.'
5:24
Teboraj minnashím Yaél éshet Jéber haqQení; minnashím baóhel teboráj.
Blessed above women shall Jael be, the wife of Heber the Kenite, above women in the tent shall she be blessed.
5:25
Máyim shaál, jaláb natánah; besépel addirím hiqríbah jemáh.
Water he asked, milk she gave him; in a lordly bowl she brought him curd.
5:26
Yadáh layyatéd tishlájnah, vimináh lehalmút amelím; vehalemáh Sísara majaqáh roshó, umajatsáh vejalfáh raqqató.
Her hand she put to the tent-pin, and her right hand to the workmen's hammer; and with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote through his head, yea, she pierced and struck through his temples.
5:27
Ben ragléha kará nafál shakáb; ben ragléha kará nafál; baashér kará sham nafál shadúd.
At her feet he sunk, he fell, he lay; at her feet he sunk, he fell; where he sunk, there he fell down dead.
5:28
Beád hajalón nishqefáh vatteyabbéb em Sísara beád haeshnáb: Maddúa boshésh rijbó labó? Maddúa ajerú paamé markebotáv?
