These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt

רְאוּבֵן שִׁמְעוֹן לֵוִי וִיהוּדָה
Re’uven, Shim‘on, Levi ve-Yehudah
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah
3
יִשָּׂשכָר זְבוּלֻן וּבִנְיָמִן
Yissachar, Zevulun u-Binyamin
Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin
4
דָּן וְנַפְתָּלִי גָּד וְאָשֵׁר
Dan ve-Naftali, Gad ve-Asher
Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher
5
וַיְהִי כָּל־נֶפֶשׁ יֹצְאֵי יֶרֶךְ יַעֲקֹב
Vayehi kol-nefesh yotze’e yerekh Ya‘akov
All the persons who descended from Jacob
6
וַיָּמָת יוֹסֵף וְכָל־אֶחָיו
Vayamot Yosef ve-khol eḥav
Joseph died, as did all his brothers
7
וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל פָּרוּ וַיִּשְׁרְצוּ
Uvene Yisra’el paru vayishretzu
The children of Israel were fruitful and multiplied abundantly

Vayakom melekh ḥadash ‘al-Mitsrayim
A new king arose over Egypt
9
וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל־עַמּוֹ הִנֵּה עַם
Vayomer el-‘amo hineh ‘am
He said to his people: Behold, the people
10
הָבָה נִּתְחַכְּמָה לוֹ פֶּן־יִרְבֶּה
Havah nitḥakemah lo pen-yirbeh
Come, let us deal wisely with them lest they increase
11
וַיָּשִׂימוּ עָלָיו שָׂרֵי מִסִּים
Vayasimu ‘alav sarei missim
They appointed taskmasters over them
12
וְכַאֲשֶׁר יְעַנּוּ אֹתוֹ כֵּן יִרְבֶּה
Vekha’asher ye‘anu oto ken yirbeh
But the more they oppressed them, the more they multiplied
13
וַיַּעֲבִדוּ מִצְרַיִם אֶת־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל
Vaya‘avidu Mitsrayim et-bene Yisra’el
The Egyptians enslaved the children of Israel
14
וַיְמָרְרוּ אֶת־חַיֵּיהֶם
Vayemareru et-ḥayyehem
They embittered their lives with harsh labor

The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives
16
בְּיַלֶּדְכֶן אֶת־הָעִבְרִיּוֹת
Beyaledkhen et-ha‘Ivriyot
When you help the Hebrew women give birth
17
וַתִּירֶאןָ הַמְיַלְּדֹת אֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים
Vatir’ena ha-meyaldot et-haElohim
But the midwives feared God
18
וַיִּקְרָא מֶלֶךְ מִצְרַיִם לַמְיַלְּדֹת
Vayikra melekh Mitsrayim la-meyaldot
So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives
19
כִּי לֹא כַנָּשִׁים הַמִּצְרִיֹּת הָעִבְרִיֹּת
Ki lo kanashim ha-Mitsriyot ha‘Ivriyot
The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women
20
וַיֵּיטֶב אֱלֹהִים לַמְיַלְּדֹת
Vayeitev Elohim la-meyaldot
God dealt well with the midwives
21
וַיַּעַשׂ לָהֶם בָּתִּים
Vaya‘as lahem batim
He established households for them

Pharaoh commanded all his people

וַיֵּלֶךְ אִישׁ מִבֵּית לֵוִי
Vayelekh ish mi-beit Levi
A man from the house of Levi went
2
וַתַּהַר הָאִשָּׁה וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן
Vatahar ha-ishah vateled ben
The woman conceived and bore a son
3
וְלֹא־יָכְלָה עוֹד הַצְּפִינוֹ
Velo yakhla ‘od hatzefino
When she could no longer hide him
4
וַתֵּתַצַּב אֲחֹתוֹ מֵרָחֹק
Vatitatzev aḥoto me-raḥok
His sister stood at a distance
5
וַתֵּרֶא אֶת־הַתֵּבָה בְּתוֹךְ הַסּוּף
Vatere et-ha-tevah betokh ha-suf
She saw the basket among the reeds
6
וַתַּחְמֹל עָלָיו
Vataḥmol ‘alav
She had compassion on him
7
וַתֹּאמֶר אֲחֹתוֹ אֶל־בַּת־פַּרְעֹה
Vatomer aḥoto el-bat Par‘oh
His sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter
8
וַתֵּלֶךְ הָעַלְמָה וַתִּקְרָא אֶת־אֵם הַיָּלֶד
Vatelekh ha-‘almah vatikra et-em ha-yeled
The girl went and called the child’s mother
9
וַתֹּאמֶר לָהּ בַּת־פַּרְעֹה
Vatomer lah bat-Par‘oh
Pharaoh’s daughter said to her
10
וַתִּקְרָא שְׁמוֹ מֹשֶׁה
Vatikra shemo Moshe
She named him Moses

Vayehi bayamim hahem vayigdal Moshe
In those days, Moses grew up

וַיִּפֶן כֹּה וָכֹה וַיַּרְא כִּי אֵין אִישׁ
Vayifen koh vakho vayyar ki ein ish
He turned this way and that and saw that there was no one
13
וַיֵּצֵא בַּיּוֹם הַשֵּׁנִי
Vayetze bayom hasheni
He went out the next day
14
מִי שָׂמְךָ לְאִישׁ שַׂר וְשֹׁפֵט
Mi samkha le’ish sar ve-shofet
Who appointed you as ruler and judge?
15
וַיִּשְׁמַע פַּרְעֹה אֶת־הַדָּבָר
Vayishma Par‘oh et-hadavar
Pharaoh heard of this matter
16
וּלְכֹהֵן מִדְיָן שֶׁבַע בָּנוֹת
Ule-kohen Midyan sheva banot
The priest of Midian had seven daughters
17
וַיָּקָם מֹשֶׁה וַיֹּשִׁעָן
Vayakom Moshe vayoshi‘an
Moses rose and rescued them
18
וַיֹּאמֶר מַדּוּעַ מִהַרְתֶּן בֹּא הַיּוֹם
Vayomer madua miharten bo hayom
He said, “Why did you return so quickly today?”
19
אִישׁ מִצְרִי הִצִּילָנוּ
Ish Mitsri hitsilanu
An Egyptian man rescued us
20
וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל־בְּנֹתָיו וְאַיּוֹ
Vayomer el-benotav ve-ayyo
He said to his daughters, “Where is he?”
21
וַיּוֹאֶל מֹשֶׁה לָשֶׁבֶת אֶת־הָאִישׁ
Vayo’el Moshe lashevet et-ha’ish
Moses agreed to dwell with the man
22
וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן וַיִּקְרָא אֶת־שְׁמוֹ גֵּרְשֹׁם
Vateled ben vayikra et-shemo Gershom
She bore a son, and he named him Gershom
23
וַיָּמָת מֶלֶךְ מִצְרַיִם
Vayamat melekh Mitsrayim
The king of Egypt died
24
וַיִּשְׁמַע אֱלֹהִים אֶת־נַאֲקָתָם
Vayishma Elohim et-na’akatam
God heard their groaning
25
וַיַּרְא אֱלֹהִים אֶת־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל
Vayar Elohim et-bene Yisra’el
God saw the children of Israel

וּמֹשֶׁה הָיָה רֹעֶה אֶת־צֹאן יִתְרוֹ
U-Moshe hayah ro‘eh et-tzon Yitro
Moses was shepherding the flock of Yitro

וַיֵּרָא מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה אֵלָיו בְּלַבַּת־אֵשׁ
Vayera mal’akh Adonay elav belabat-esh
An angel of the Eternal appeared to him in a flame of fire
3
וַיֹּאמֶר מֹשֶׁה אָסֻרָה־נָּא וְאֶרְאֶה
Vayomer Moshe asurah-na ve’er’eh
Moses said, “I will turn aside and see”
4
וַיַּרְא יְהוָה כִּי סָר לִרְאוֹת
Vayar Adonay ki sar lirot
The Eternal saw that he turned aside to see
5
אַל־תִּקְרַב הֲלֹם שַׁל־נְעָלֶיךָ
Al tikrav halom shal-na‘alekha
“Do not come closer; remove your sandals”
6
אָנֹכִי אֱלֹהֵי אָבִיךָ
Anokhi Elohei avikha
“I am the God of your father”
7
רָאֹה רָאִיתִי אֶת־עֳנִי עַמִּי
Ra’oh ra’iti et-‘oni ‘ami
“I have surely seen the affliction of My people”
8
וָאֵרֵד לְהַצִּילוֹ מִיַּד מִצְרָיִם
Va’ered lehatzilo miyad Mitsrayim
“I have come down to rescue them from Egypt”
9
וְעַתָּה הִנֵּה צַעֲקַת בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵל
Ve‘atah hineh tsa‘akat bene-Yisra’el
“Now the cry of the children of Israel has come to Me”
10
וְעַתָּה לְכָה וְאֶשְׁלָחֲךָ אֶל־פַּרְעֹה
Ve‘atah lekha ve’eshlakhakha el-Par‘oh
“Now go, and I will send you to Pharaoh”
11
מִי אָנֹכִי כִּי אֵלֵךְ אֶל־פַּרְעֹה
Mi anokhi ki elekh el-Par‘oh
Moses said, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh?”
12
כִּי אֶהְיֶה עִמָּךְ
Ki Ehyeh ‘immakh
He said, “For I will be with you”

יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי אֲבֹתֵיכֶם שְׁלָחַנִי אֲלֵיכֶם
Adonay Elohei avotekhem shelakhani aleikhem
“The Eternal, God of your fathers, has sent me to you”
16
לֵךְ וְאָסַפְתָּ אֶת־זִקְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל
Lekh ve’asafta et-ziknei Yisra’el
“Go and gather the elders of Israel”
17
וָאֹמַר אַעֲלֶה אֶתְכֶם מֵעֳנִי מִצְרַיִם
Va’omar a‘aleh etkhem me‘oni Mitsrayim
“I will bring you up from the affliction of Egypt”
18
וְשָׁמְעוּ לְקֹלֶךָ
Ve-sham‘u le-kolekha
They will listen to your voice
19
וַאֲנִי יָדַעְתִּי כִּי לֹא־יִתֵּן אֶתְכֶם
Va’ani yada‘ti ki lo yiten etkhem
I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go
20
וְשָׁלַחְתִּי אֶת־יָדִי
Ve-shalakhti et-yadi
I will stretch out My hand
21
וְנָתַתִּי אֶת־חֵן הָעָם
Ve-natati et-ḥen ha‘am
I will grant this people favor
22
וְשָׁאֲלָה אִשָּׁה מִשְּׁכֶנְתָּהּ
Ve-sha’alah ishah mishkenetah
Each woman shall ask of her neighbor

The Eternal said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand”

לְמַעַן יַאֲמִינוּ
Lema‘an ya’aminu
So that they may believe

וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה עוֹד הָבֵא נָא יָדְךָ
Vayomer Adonay ‘od have-na yadekha
The Eternal said further, “Put your hand inside your cloak”
7
וַיֹּצִיאָהּ מֵחֵיקוֹ וְהִנֵּה שָׁבָה
Vayotzi’ah meḥeiko vehineh shavah
He took it out, and it was restored
8
וְהָיָה אִם־לֹא יַאֲמִינוּ לְךָ
Vehayah im-lo ya’aminu lekha
If they do not believe you
9
וְלָקַחְתָּ מִמֵּימֵי הַיְאֹר
Ve-lakaḥta mimei ha-Ye’or
You shall take water from the Nile
10
לֹא אִישׁ דְּבָרִים אָנֹכִי
Lo ish devarim anokhi
“I am not a man of words”
11
מִי שָׂם פֶּה לָאָדָם
Mi sam peh la’adam
“Who gives man a mouth?”
12
וְעַתָּה לֵךְ וְאָנֹכִי אֶהְיֶה עִם־פִּיךָ
Ve‘atah lekh ve’anokhi ehyeh ‘im pikha
“Now go, and I will be with your mouth”
13
שְׁלַח־נָא בְּיַד תִּשְׁלָח
Shelakh-na beyad tishlaḥ
“Please send through whomever You will send”
14
וַיִּחַר אַף־יְהוָה בְּמֹשֶׁה
Vayiḥar af-Adonay be-Moshe
The anger of the Eternal flared against Moses
15
הֲלֹא אַהֲרֹן אָחִיךָ הַלֵּוִי
Halo Aharon aḥikha ha-Levi
“Is there not Aaron your brother, the Levite?”
16
וְדִבֶּר־הוּא לְךָ אֶל־הָעָם
Ve-diber hu lekha el-ha‘am
He shall speak for you to the people
17
וְאֶת־הַמַּטֶּה הַזֶּה תִּקַּח בְּיָדֶךָ
Ve’et-hamateh hazeh tikaḥ beyadekha
You shall take this staff in your hand
