Genesis - Chapter 21

21:1

God granted special providence to Sarah as He said He would, and God did what He promised for Sarah. 
Va'Adonay pakad et-Sarah ka'asher amar vaya'as Adonay le-Sarah ka'asher diber.

אוַֽיהֹוָ֛ה פָּקַ֥ד אֶת־שָׂרָ֖ה כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר אָמָ֑ר וַיַּ֧עַשׂ יְהֹוָ֛ה לְשָׂרָ֖ה כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֵּֽר:

21:2

Sarah became pregnant, and she gave birth to Abraham's son in his old age. It was at the exact time that God had promised it to him. 
Vatahar vateled Sarah le-Avraham ben lizkunav lamo'ed asher-diber oto Elohim.

בוַתַּ֩הַר֩ וַתֵּ֨לֶד שָׂרָ֧ה לְאַבְרָהָ֛ם בֵּ֖ן לִזְקֻנָ֑יו לַמּוֹעֵ֕ד אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר אֹת֖וֹ אֱלֹהִֽים:

21:3

Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son he had, to whom Sarah had just given birth. 
Vayikra Avraham et-shem-beno hanolad-lo asher-yaldah-lo Sarah Yitschak.

גוַיִּקְרָ֨א אַבְרָהָ֜ם אֶת־שֶׁם־בְּנ֧וֹ הַנּֽוֹלַד־ל֛וֹ אֲשֶׁר־יָֽלְדָה־לּ֥וֹ שָׂרָ֖ה יִצְחָֽק:

21:4

When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God had commanded. 
Vayamol Avraham et-Yitschak beno ben-shmonat yamim ka'asher tsivah oto Elohim.

דוַיָּ֤מָל אַבְרָהָם֙ אֶת־יִצְחָ֣ק בְּנ֔וֹ בֶּן־שְׁמֹנַ֖ת יָמִ֑ים כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה אֹת֖וֹ אֱלֹהִֽים:

21:5

Fifth Reading
Abraham was 100 years old when his son Isaac was born. 
Ve'Avraham ben-me'at shanah behivaled lo et Yitschak beno.

הוְאַבְרָהָ֖ם בֶּן־מְאַ֣ת שָׁנָ֑ה בְּהִוָּ֣לֶד ל֔וֹ אֵ֖ת יִצְחָ֥ק בְּנֽוֹ:

21:6

Sarah said, 'God has given me laughter. All who hear about itwill laugh for me.' 
Vatomer Sarah tsechok asah li Elohim kol-hashomea yitsachak-li.

ווַתֹּ֣אמֶר שָׂרָ֔ה צְחֹ֕ק עָ֥שָׂה לִ֖י אֱלֹהִ֑ים כָּל־הַשֹּׁמֵ֖עַ יִֽצֲחַק־לִֽי:

21:7

She said, 'Who would have even suggested to Abraham that Sarah would be nursing children? But here I have given birth to a son in his old age!' 
Vatomer mi milel le-Avraham heynikah vanim Sarah ki-yaladeti ven lizkunav.

זוַתֹּ֗אמֶר מִ֤י מִלֵּל֙ לְאַבְרָהָ֔ם הֵינִ֥יקָה בָנִ֖ים שָׂרָ֑ה כִּֽי־יָלַ֥דְתִּי בֵ֖ן לִזְקֻנָֽיו:

21:8

The child grew and was weaned. Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. 
Vayigdal hayeled vayigamal vaya'as Avraham mishteh gadol beyom higamel et-Yitschak.

חוַיִּגְדַּ֥ל הַיֶּ֖לֶד וַיִּגָּמַ֑ל וַיַּ֤עַשׂ אַבְרָהָם֙ מִשְׁתֶּ֣ה גָד֔וֹל בְּי֖וֹם הִגָּמֵ֥ל אֶת־יִצְחָֽק:

21:9

But Sarah saw the son that Hagar had born to Abraham playing.
Vatere Sarah et-ben-Hagar haMitsrit asher-yaldah le-Avraham metsachek.

טוַתֵּ֨רֶא שָׂרָ֜ה אֶת־בֶּן־הָגָ֧ר הַמִּצְרִ֛ית אֲשֶׁר־יָֽלְדָ֥ה לְאַבְרָהָ֖ם מְצַחֵֽק:

21:10

She said to Abraham, 'Drive away this slave together with her son. The son of this slave will not share the inheritance with my son Isaac!' 
Vatomer le-Avraham garesh ha'amah hazot ve'et-benah ki lo yirash ben-ha'amah hazot im-beni im-Yitschak.

יוַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לְאַבְרָהָ֔ם גָּרֵ֛שׁ הָֽאָמָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את וְאֶת־בְּנָ֑הּ כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יִירַשׁ֙ בֶּן־הָֽאָמָ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את עִם־בְּנִ֖י עִם־יִצְחָֽק:

21:11

This troubled Abraham very much because it involved his son. 
Vayera hadavar me'od be'eyney Avraham al odot beno.

יאוַיֵּ֧רַע הַדָּבָ֛ר מְאֹ֖ד בְּעֵינֵ֣י אַבְרָהָ֑ם עַ֖ל אוֹדֹ֥ת בְּנֽוֹ:

21:12

But God said to Abraham, 'Do not be troubled because of the boy and your slave. Do everything that Sarah tells you. It is through Isaac that you will gain posterity. 
Vayomer Elohim el-Avraham al-yera be'eyneycha al-hana'ar ve'al-amatecha kol asher tomar eleycha Sarah shma bekolah ki beYitschak yikare lecha zara.

יבוַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֜ים אֶל־אַבְרָהָ֗ם אַל־יֵרַ֤ע בְּעֵינֶ֨יךָ֙ עַל־הַנַּ֣עַר וְעַל־אֲמָתֶ֔ךָ כֹּל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר תֹּאמַ֥ר אֵלֶ֛יךָ שָׂרָ֖ה שְׁמַ֣ע בְּקֹלָ֑הּ כִּ֣י בְיִצְחָ֔ק יִקָּרֵ֥א לְךָ֖ זָֽרַע:

21:13

But still, I will also make the slave's son into a nation, for he is your child.' 
Vegam et-ben-ha'amah legoy asimenu ki zar'acha hu.

יגוְגַ֥ם אֶת־בֶּן־הָֽאָמָ֖ה לְג֣וֹי אֲשִׂימֶ֑נּוּ כִּ֥י זַרְעֲךָ֖ הֽוּא:

21:14

Abraham got up early in the morning. He took bread and askin of water, and gave it to Hagar, placing it on her shoulder. He sent her away with the boy. She left and roamed aimlessly in the Beer-sheba desert. 
Vayashkem Avraham baboker vayikach-lechem vechemat mayim vayiten el-Hagar sam al-shichmah ve'et-hayeled vayeshalcheha vatelech vateta bemidbar Be'er Shava.

ידוַיַּשְׁכֵּ֣ם אַבְרָהָ֣ם | בַּבֹּ֡קֶר וַיִּקַּח־לֶ֩חֶם֩ וְחֵ֨מַת מַ֜יִם וַיִּתֵּ֣ן אֶל־הָ֠גָ֠ר שָׂ֧ם עַל־שִׁכְמָ֛הּ וְאֶת־הַיֶּ֖לֶד וַיְשַׁלְּחֶ֑הָ וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ וַתֵּ֔תַע בְּמִדְבַּ֖ר בְּאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע:

21:15

When the water in the skin was used up, she set the boy under one of the bushes. 
Vayichlu hamayim min-hachemet vatashlech et-hayeled tachat achad hasichim.

טווַיִּכְל֥וּ הַמַּ֖יִם מִן־הַחֵ֑מֶת וַתַּשְׁלֵ֣ךְ אֶת־הַיֶּ֔לֶד תַּ֖חַת אַחַ֥ד הַשִּׂיחִֽם:

21:16

She walked away, and sat down facing him, about a bowshot away. She said, 'Let me not see the boy die.' She sat there facing him, and she wept in a loud voice. 
Vatelech vateshev lah mineged harchek kimetachavey keshet ki amerah al-er'eh bemot hayaled vateshev mineged vatisa et-kolah vatevk.

טזוַתֵּ֩לֶךְ֩ וַתֵּ֨שֶׁב לָ֜הּ מִנֶּ֗גֶד הַרְחֵק֙ כִּמְטַֽחֲוֵ֣י קֶ֔שֶׁת כִּ֣י אָֽמְרָ֔ה אַל־אֶרְאֶ֖ה בְּמ֣וֹת הַיָּ֑לֶד וַתֵּ֣שֶׁב מִנֶּ֔גֶד וַתִּשָּׂ֥א אֶת־קֹלָ֖הּ וַתֵּֽבְךְּ:

21:17

God heard the boy weeping. God's angel called Hagar from heaven and said to her, 'What's the matter Hagar? Do not be afraid. God has heard the boy's voice there where he is. 
Vayishma Elohim et-kol hana'ar vayikra mal'ach Elohim el-Hagar min-hashamayim vayomer lah mah-lach Hagar al-tire'i ki-shama Elohim el-kol hana'ar ba'asher hu-sham.

יזוַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע אֱלֹהִים֘ אֶת־ק֣וֹל הַנַּ֒עַר֒ וַיִּקְרָא֩ מַלְאַ֨ךְ אֱלֹהִ֤ים | אֶל־הָגָר֙ מִן־הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וַיֹּ֥אמֶר לָ֖הּ מַה־לָּ֣ךְ הָגָ֑ר אַל־תִּ֣ירְאִ֔י כִּֽי־שָׁמַ֧ע אֱלֹהִ֛ים אֶל־ק֥וֹל הַנַּ֖עַר בַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר הוּא־שָֽׁם:

21:18

Go and lift up the boy. Keep your hand strong on him, for I will make of him a great nation.' 
Kumi se'i et-hana'ar vehachasiki et-yadech bo ki-legoy gadol asimenu.

יחק֚וּמִי שְׂאִ֣י אֶת־הַנַּ֔עַר וְהַֽחֲזִ֥יקִי אֶת־יָדֵ֖ךְ בּ֑וֹ כִּֽי־לְג֥וֹי גָּד֖וֹל אֲשִׂימֶֽנּוּ:

21:19

God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went and filled the skin with water, giving the boy some to drink. 
Vayifkach Elohim et-eyneyha vatere be'er mayim vatelech vatemale et-hachemet mayim vatashk et-hana'ar.

יטוַיִּפְקַ֤ח אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶת־עֵינֶ֔יהָ וַתֵּ֖רֶא בְּאֵ֣ר מָ֑יִם וַתֵּ֜לֶךְ וַתְּמַלֵּ֤א אֶת־הַחֵ֨מֶת֙ מַ֔יִם וַתַּ֖שְׁקְ אֶת־הַנָּֽעַר:

21:20

God was with the boy. [The boy] grew up and lived in the desert, where he became an expert archer. 
Vayehi Elohim et-hana'ar vayigdal vayeshev bamidbar vayehi roveh kashat.

כוַיְהִ֧י אֱלֹהִ֛ים אֶת־הַנַּ֖עַר וַיִּגְדָּ֑ל וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר וַיְהִ֖י רֹבֶ֥ה קַשָּֽׁת:

21:21

He settled in the Paran Desert, and his mother got him a wife from Egypt. 
Vayeshev bemidbar Paran vatikach-lo imo ishah me'erets Mitsrayim.

כאוַיֵּ֖שֶׁב בְּמִדְבַּ֣ר פָּארָ֑ן וַתִּקַּח־ל֥וֹ אִמּ֛וֹ אִשָּׁ֖ה מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם:

21:22

Sixth Reading
Around that time, Abimelekh and his general Pikhol made a declaration to Abraham, saying, 'God is with you in all that you do. 
Vayehi ba'et hahi vayomer Avimelech uFichol sar-tseva'o el-Avraham lemor Elohim imecha bechol asher-atah oseh.

כבוַֽיְהִי֙ בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔וא וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֗לֶךְ וּפִיכֹל֙ שַׂר־צְבָא֔וֹ אֶל־אַבְרָהָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר אֱלֹהִ֣ים עִמְּךָ֔ בְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־אַתָּ֖ה עֹשֶֽׂה:

21:23

Now swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me, with my children, or with my grandchildren. Show to me and the land where you were an immigrant the same kindness that I have shown to you.' 
Ve'atah hishave'ah li be'Elohim henah im-tishkor li ulenini ulenechdi kachesed asher-asiti imcha ta'aseh imadi ve'im ha'arets asher-gartah bah.

כגוְעַתָּ֗ה הִשָּׁ֨בְעָה לִּ֤י בֵֽאלֹהִים֙ הֵ֔נָּה אִם־תִּשְׁקֹ֣ר לִ֔י וּלְנִינִ֖י וּלְנֶכְדִּ֑י כַּחֶ֜סֶד אֲשֶׁר־עָשִׂ֤יתִי עִמְּךָ֙ תַּֽעֲשֶׂ֣ה עִמָּדִ֔י וְעִם־הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־גַּ֥רְתָּה בָּֽהּ:

21:24

'I will swear,' replied Abraham. 
Vayomer Avraham anochi ishave'a.

כדוַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם אָֽנֹכִ֖י אִשָּׁבֵֽעַ:

21:25

Abraham then complained to Abimelekh about the well that Abimelekh's servants had taken by force. 
Vehochiach Avraham et-Avimelech al-odot be'er hamayim asher gazlu avdey Avimelech.

כהוְהוֹכִ֥חַ אַבְרָהָ֖ם אֶת־אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ עַל־אֹדוֹת֙ בְּאֵ֣ר הַמַּ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֥ר גָּֽזְל֖וּ עַבְדֵ֥י אֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ:

21:26

Abimelekh said, 'I don't know who could have done such a thing. You never told me. I heard nothing about it until today.' 
Vayomer Avimelech lo yadati mi asah et-hadavar hazeh vegam-atah lo-higadeta li vegam anochi lo shamati bilti hayom.

כווַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ לֹ֣א יָדַ֔עְתִּי מִ֥י עָשָׂ֖ה אֶת־הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וְגַם־אַתָּ֞ה לֹֽא־הִגַּ֣דְתָּ לִּ֗י וְגַ֧ם אָֽנֹכִ֛י לֹ֥א שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי בִּלְתִּ֥י הַיּֽוֹם:

21:27

Abraham took sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelekh, and the two of them made a treaty. 
Vayikach Avraham tson uvakar vayiten la-Avimelech vayichretu shneyhem brit.

כזוַיִּקַּ֤ח אַבְרָהָם֙ צֹ֣אן וּבָקָ֔ר וַיִּתֵּ֖ן לַֽאֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ וַיִּכְרְת֥וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֖ם בְּרִֽית:

21:28

Abraham then put seven female sheep aside by themselves. 
Vayatsev Avraham et-sheva kivsot hatson levadehen.

כחוַיַּצֵּ֣ב אַבְרָהָ֗ם אֶת־שֶׁ֛בַע כִּבְשׂ֥ת הַצֹּ֖אן לְבַדְּהֶֽן:

21:29

Abimelekh asked Abraham, 'What is the meaning of these seven ewes that you have set aside?' 
Vayomer Avimelech el-Avraham mah henah sheva kevasot ha'eleh asher hitsavta levadanah.

כטוַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ אֶל־אַבְרָהָ֑ם מָ֣ה הֵ֗נָּה שֶׁ֤בַע כְּבָשׂת֙ הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִצַּ֖בְתָּ לְבַדָּֽנָה:

21:30

'Take these seven ewes from my hand,' replied [Abraham]. 'It will be my proof that I dug this well.' 
Vayomer ki et-sheva kevasot tikach miyadi ba'avur tihyeh li le'edah ki chafarti et-habe'er hazot.

לוַיֹּ֕אמֶר כִּ֚י אֶת־שֶׁ֣בַע כְּבָשׂ֔ת תִּקַּ֖ח מִיָּדִ֑י בַּֽעֲבוּר֙ תִּֽהְיֶה־לִּ֣י לְעֵדָ֔ה כִּ֥י חָפַ֖רְתִּי אֶת־הַבְּאֵ֥ר הַזֹּֽאת:

21:31

That area was therefore called Beer-sheba, since the two had made an oath there. 
Al-ken kara lamakom hahu Be'er Shava ki sham nishbe'u shneyhem.

לאעַל־כֵּ֗ן קָרָ֛א לַמָּק֥וֹם הַה֖וּא בְּאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע כִּ֛י שָׁ֥ם נִשְׁבְּע֖וּ שְׁנֵיהֶֽם:

21:32

They thus made a treaty in Beer-sheba. Abimelekh and his general Pikhol then left, and they returned to the land of the Philistines. 
Vayichretu verit biVe'er Shava vayakom Avimelech uFichol sar-tseva'o vayashuvu el-erets Plishtim.

לבוַיִּכְרְת֥וּ בְרִ֖ית בִּבְאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע וַיָּ֣קָם אֲבִימֶ֗לֶךְ וּפִיכֹל֙ שַׂר־צְבָא֔וֹ וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ אֶל־אֶ֥רֶץ פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים:

21:33

[Abraham] planted a tamarisk tree in Beer-sheba, and there he called in the name of God, Lord of the Universe. 
Vayita eshel biVe'er Shava vayikra-sham beshem Adonay El Olam.

לגוַיִּטַּ֥ע אֵ֖שֶׁל בִּבְאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע וַיִּ֨קְרָא־שָׁ֔ם בְּשֵׁ֥ם יְהֹוָ֖ה אֵ֥ל עוֹלָֽם:

21:34

Abraham lived [there] in the land of the Philistines for many days. 
Vayagar Avraham be'erets Plishtim yamim rabim.
