26:1

There was a famine in the land, aside from the first famine in the time of Abraham. Isaac went toAbimelekh king of the Philistines in Gerar. 
Vayehi ra'av ba'arets milvad hara'av harishon asher hayah bimey Avraham vayelech Yitschak el-Avimelech melech-Plishtim Gerarah.

אוַיְהִ֤י רָעָב֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ מִלְּבַד֙ הָֽרָעָ֣ב הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיָ֖ה בִּימֵ֣י אַבְרָהָ֑ם וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ יִצְחָ֛ק אֶל־אֲבִימֶ֥לֶךְ מֶֽלֶךְ־פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים גְּרָֽרָה:

26:2

God appeared to [Isaac] and said, 'Do not go down to Egypt. Remain undisturbed in the land that I shall designate to you. 
Vayera elav Adonay vayomer al-tered Mitsraymah shechon ba'arets asher omar eleycha.

בוַיֵּרָ֤א אֵלָיו֙ יְהֹוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אַל־תֵּרֵ֣ד מִצְרָ֑יְמָה שְׁכֹ֣ן בָּאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֖ר אֹמַ֥ר אֵלֶֽיךָ:

26:3

Remain an immigrant in this land. I will be with you and bless you, since it will be to you and your offspring that I will give all these lands. I will thus keep the oath that I made to your father Abraham. 
Gur ba'arets hazot ve'eheyeh imecha va'avaracheka ki-lecha ulezar'acha eten et-kol-ha'aratsot ha'El vahakimoti et-hashvuah asher nishbati le-Avraham avicha.

גגּ֚וּר בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֔את וְאֶֽהְיֶ֥ה עִמְּךָ֖ וַֽאֲבָֽרֲכֶ֑ךָּ כִּֽי־לְךָ֣ וּלְזַרְעֲךָ֗ אֶתֵּן֙ אֶת־כָּל־הָֽאֲרָצֹ֣ת הָאֵ֔ל וַֽהֲקִֽמֹתִי֙ אֶת־הַשְּׁבֻעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם אָבִֽיךָ:

26:4

I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars of the sky, and grant them all these lands. All the nations on earth shall be blessed through your descendants. 
Vehirbeyti et-zar'acha kechochevey hashamayim venatati lezar'acha et kol-ha'aratsot ha'El vehitbarachu vezar'acha kol goyey ha'arets.

דוְהִרְבֵּיתִ֤י אֶת־זַרְעֲךָ֙ כְּכֽוֹכְבֵ֣י הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְנָתַתִּ֣י לְזַרְעֲךָ֔ אֵ֥ת כָּל־הָֽאֲרָצֹ֖ת הָאֵ֑ל וְהִתְבָּֽרֲכ֣וּ בְזַרְעֲךָ֔ כֹּ֖ל גּוֹיֵ֥י הָאָֽרֶץ:

26:5

All this is because Abraham obeyed My voice, and kept My charge, My commandments, My decrees, and My laws.' 
Ekev asher-shama Avraham bekoli vayishmor mishmarti mitsvotay chukotay vetorotay.

העֵ֕קֶב אֲשֶׁר־שָׁמַ֥ע אַבְרָהָ֖ם בְּקֹלִ֑י וַיִּשְׁמֹר֙ מִשְׁמַרְתִּ֔י מִצְו‍ֹתַ֖י חֻקּוֹתַ֥י וְתֽוֹרֹתָֽי:

26:6

Second Reading
Isaac thus settled in Gerar. 
Vayeshev Yitschak biGrar.

ווַיֵּ֥שֶׁב יִצְחָ֖ק בִּגְרָֽר:

26:7

When the local men asked about his wife, he told them that she was his sister. He was afraid to say that she was his wife. Rebecca was so good-looking that the local men could have killed him because of her. 
Vayish'alu anshey hamakom le'ishto vayomer achoti hi ki yare lemor ishti pen-yaharguni anshey hamakom al-Rivkah ki-tovat mar'eh hi.

זוַיִּשְׁאֲל֞וּ אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמָּקוֹם֙ לְאִשְׁתּ֔וֹ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֲחֹ֣תִי הִ֑וא כִּ֤י יָרֵא֙ לֵאמֹ֣ר אִשְׁתִּ֔י פֶּן־יַֽהַרְגֻ֜נִי אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמָּקוֹם֙ עַל־רִבְקָ֔ה כִּֽי־טוֹבַ֥ת מַרְאֶ֖ה הִֽוא:

26:8

Once, after [Isaac] had been there for some time, Abimelekh, king of the Philistines, was looking out the window, and he saw Isaac enjoying himself with his wife Rebecca. 
Vayehi ki archu-lo sham hayamim vayashkef Avimelech melech Plishtim be'ad hachalon vayar vehineh Yitschak metsachek et Rivkah ishto.

חוַיְהִ֗י כִּ֣י אָֽרְכוּ־ל֥וֹ שָׁם֙ הַיָּמִ֔ים וַיַּשְׁקֵ֗ף אֲבִימֶ֨לֶךְ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים בְּעַ֖ד הַֽחַלּ֑וֹן וַיַּ֗רְא וְהִנֵּ֤ה יִצְחָק֙ מְצַחֵ֔ק אֵ֖ת רִבְקָ֥ה אִשְׁתּֽוֹ:

26:9

Abimelekh summoned Isaac. 'But she is your wife!' he said. 'How could you have said that she is your sister?'

'I was afraid that I would die because of her,' replied Isaac. 
Vayikra Avimelech le-Yitschak vayomer ach hineh ishtecha hi ve'eych amarta achoti hi vayomer elav Yitschak ki amarti pen-amut aleyha.

טוַיִּקְרָ֨א אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ לְיִצְחָ֗ק וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אַ֣ךְ הִנֵּ֤ה אִשְׁתְּךָ֙ הִ֔וא וְאֵ֥יךְ אָמַ֖רְתָּ אֲחֹ֣תִי הִ֑וא וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ יִצְחָ֔ק כִּ֣י אָמַ֔רְתִּי פֶּן־אָמ֖וּת עָלֶֽיהָ:

26:10

'What have you done to us?' demanded Abimelekh. 'One of the people could easily have slept with your wife! You would have made us commit a terrible crime!'
Vayomer Avimelech mah-zot asita lanu kime'at shachav achad ha'am et-ishtecha veheveta aleynu asham.

יוַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ מַה־זֹּ֖את עָשִׂ֣יתָ לָּ֑נוּ כִּ֠מְעַ֠ט שָׁכַ֞ב אַחַ֤ד הָעָם֙ אֶת־אִשְׁתֶּ֔ךָ וְהֵֽבֵאתָ֥ עָלֵ֖ינוּ אָשָֽׁם:

26:11

Abimelekh issued an order to all the people: 'Whoever touches this man or his wife shall die.' 
Vayetsav Avimelech et-kol-ha'am lemor hanogea ba'ish hazeh uve'ishto mot yumat.

יאוַיְצַ֣ו אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ אֶת־כָּל־הָעָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר הַנֹּגֵ֜עַ בָּאִ֥ישׁ הַזֶּ֛ה וּבְאִשְׁתּ֖וֹ מ֥וֹת יוּמָֽת:

26:12

Isaac farmed in the area. That year, he reaped a hundred times [as much as he sowed], for God had blessed him. 
Vayizra Yitschak ba'arets hahi vayimtsa bashanah hahi me'ah she'arim vayevarachehu Adonay.

יבוַיִּזְרַ֤ע יִצְחָק֙ בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַהִ֔וא וַיִּמְצָ֛א בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה הַהִ֖וא מֵאָ֣ה שְׁעָרִ֑ים וַיְבָֽרֲכֵ֖הוּ יְהֹוָֽה:

26:13

Third Reading
This was the beginning of his prosperity. He then continued to prosper until he became extremely wealthy. 
Vayigdal ha'ish vayelech haloch vegadel ad ki-gadal me'od.

יגוַיִּגְדַּ֖ל הָאִ֑ישׁ וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ הָלוֹךְ֙ וְגָדֵ֔ל עַ֥ד כִּֽי־גָדַ֖ל מְאֹֽד:

26:14

He had flocks of sheep, herds of cattle, and a large retinue of slaves.

The Philistines became jealous of him. 
Vayehi-lo mikneh-tson umikneh vakar va'avudah rabah bayekane'u oto Plishtim.

ידוַֽיְהִי־ל֤וֹ מִקְנֵה־צֹאן֙ וּמִקְנֵ֣ה בָקָ֔ר וַֽעֲבֻדָּ֖ה רַבָּ֑ה וַיְקַנְא֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים:

26:15

They plugged up all the wells that his father's servants had dug while Abraham was still alive, and they filled them with earth. 
Vechol-habe'erot asher chafru avdey aviv bimey Avraham aviv sitmum Plishtim vayemale'um afar.

טווְכָל־הַבְּאֵרֹ֗ת אֲשֶׁ֤ר חָֽפְרוּ֙ עַבְדֵ֣י אָבִ֔יו בִּימֵ֖י אַבְרָהָ֣ם אָבִ֑יו סִתְּמ֣וּם פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיְמַלְא֖וּם עָפָֽר:

26:16

Abimelekh said to Isaac, 'Go away from us. You have become much more powerful than we are.' 
Vayomer Avimelech el-Yitschak lech me'imanu ki-atsamta mimenu me'od.

טזוַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ אֶל־יִצְחָ֑ק לֵ֚ךְ מֵֽעִמָּ֔נוּ כִּֽי־עָצַ֥מְתָּ מִמֶּ֖נּוּ מְאֹֽד:

26:17

Isaac left the area and camped in the Gerar Valley, intending to settle there. 
Vayelech misham Yitschak vayichan beNachal-Grar vayeshev sham.

יזוַיֵּ֥לֶךְ מִשָּׁ֖ם יִצְחָ֑ק וַיִּ֥חַן בְּנַֽחַל־גְּרָ֖ר וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב שָֽׁם:

26:18

He redug the wells that had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, which had been plugged up by the Philistines after Abraham's death. He gave them the same names that his father had given them. 
Vayashov Yitschak vayachpor et-be'erot hamayim asher chafru bimey Avraham aviv vayesatmum Plishtim acharey mot Avraham vayikra lahen shemot kashemot asher-kara lahen aviv.

יחוַיָּ֨שָׁב יִצְחָ֜ק וַיַּחְפֹּ֣ר | אֶת־בְּאֵרֹ֣ת הַמַּ֗יִם אֲשֶׁ֤ר חָֽפְרוּ֙ בִּימֵי֙ אַבְרָהָ֣ם אָבִ֔יו וַיְסַתְּמ֣וּם פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים אַֽחֲרֵ֖י מ֣וֹת אַבְרָהָ֑ם וַיִּקְרָ֤א לָהֶן֙ שֵׁמ֔וֹת כַּשֵּׁמֹ֕ת אֲשֶׁר־קָרָ֥א לָהֶ֖ן אָבִֽיו:

26:19

Isaac's servants then dug in the valley, and found a new well, brimming over with fresh water. 
Vayachperu avdey-Yitschak banachal vayimtse'u-sham be'er mayim chayim.

יטוַיַּחְפְּר֥וּ עַבְדֵֽי־יִצְחָ֖ק בַּנָּ֑חַל וַיִּ֨מְצְאוּ־שָׁ֔ם בְּאֵ֖ר מַ֥יִם חַיִּֽים:

26:20

The shepherds of Gerar disputed with Isaac's shepherds, claiming that the water was theirs. [Isaac] named the well Challenge (Esek), because they had challenged him. 
Vayarivu ro'ey Gerar im-ro'ey Yitschak lemor lanu hamayim vayikra shem-habe'er Esek ki hit'aseku imo.

כוַיָּרִ֜יבוּ רֹעֵ֣י גְרָ֗ר עִם־רֹעֵ֥י יִצְחָ֛ק לֵאמֹ֖ר לָ֣נוּ הַמָּ֑יִם וַיִּקְרָ֤א שֵֽׁם־הַבְּאֵר֙ עֵ֔שֶׂק כִּ֥י הִתְעַשְּׂק֖וּ עִמּֽוֹ:

26:21

They dug another well, and it was also disputed. [Isaac] named it Accusation (Sitnah). 
Vayachperu be'er acheret vayarivu gam-aleyha vayikra shmah Sitnah.

כאוַיַּחְפְּרוּ֙ בְּאֵ֣ר אַחֶ֔רֶת וַיָּרִ֖יבוּ גַּם־עָלֶ֑יהָ וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמָ֖הּ שִׂטְנָֽה:

26:22

He then moved away from there and dug another well. This time it was not disputed, so he named it Wide Spaces (Rechovoth). 'Now God will grant us wide open spaces,' he said. 'We can be fruitful in the land.' 
Vayatek misham vayachpor be'er acheret velo ravu aleyha vayikra shemah Rechovot vayomer ki-atah hirchiv Adonay lanu ufarinu va'arets.

כבוַיַּעְתֵּ֣ק מִשָּׁ֗ם וַיַּחְפֹּר֙ בְּאֵ֣ר אַחֶ֔רֶת וְלֹ֥א רָב֖וּ עָלֶ֑יהָ וַיִּקְרָ֤א שְׁמָהּ֙ רְחֹב֔וֹת וַיֹּ֗אמֶר כִּ֣י עַתָּ֞ה הִרְחִ֧יב יְהֹוָ֛ה לָ֖נוּ וּפָרִ֥ינוּ בָאָֽרֶץ:

26:23

Fourth Reading
From there, [Isaac] went up to Beer-sheba. 
Vaya'al misham Be'er Shava.

כגוַיַּ֥עַל מִשָּׁ֖ם בְּאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע:

26:24

God appeared to him that night and said, 'I am God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless you and grant you very many descendants because of My servant Abraham.' 
Vayera elav Adonay balaylah hahu vayomer anochi Elohey Avraham avicha al-tira ki-itecha anochi uverachticha vehirbeyti et-zar'acha ba'avur Avraham avdi.

כדוַיֵּרָ֨א אֵלָ֤יו יְהֹוָה֙ בַּלַּ֣יְלָה הַה֔וּא וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אָֽנֹכִ֕י אֱלֹהֵ֖י אַבְרָהָ֣ם אָבִ֑יךָ אַל־תִּירָא֙ כִּֽי־אִתְּךָ֣ אָנֹ֔כִי וּבֵֽרַכְתִּ֨יךָ֙ וְהִרְבֵּיתִ֣י אֶת־זַרְעֲךָ֔ בַּֽעֲב֖וּר אַבְרָהָ֥ם עַבְדִּֽי:

26:25

[Isaac] built an altar there and called in God's name. He set up his tents there, and his servants dug a well in the area. 
Vayiven sham mizbe'ach vayikra beshem Adonay vayet-sham aholo vayichru-sham avdey-Yitschak be'er.

כהוַיִּ֧בֶן שָׁ֣ם מִזְבֵּ֗חַ וַיִּקְרָא֙ בְּשֵׁ֣ם יְהֹוָ֔ה וַיֶּט־שָׁ֖ם אָֽהֳל֑וֹ וַיִּכְרוּ־שָׁ֥ם עַבְדֵֽי־יִצְחָ֖ק בְּאֵֽר:

26:26

Abimelekh came to [Isaac] from Gerar, along with a group of friends and his general Pikhol. 
Va'Avimelech halach elav miGrar ve'achuzat mere'ehu uFichol sar-tseva'o.

כווַֽאֲבִימֶ֕לֶךְ הָלַ֥ךְ אֵלָ֖יו מִגְּרָ֑ר וַֽאֲחֻזַּת֙ מֵֽרֵעֵ֔הוּ וּפִיכֹ֖ל שַׂר־צְבָאֽוֹ:

26:27

'Why have you come to me?' asked Isaac. 'You hate me; you drove me away from you!' 
Vayomer alehem Yitschak madua batem elay ve'atem snetem oti vateshalchuni me'itchem.

כזוַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ יִצְחָ֔ק מַדּ֖וּעַ בָּאתֶ֣ם אֵלָ֑י וְאַתֶּם֙ שְׂנֵאתֶ֣ם אֹתִ֔י וַתְּשַׁלְּח֖וּנִי מֵֽאִתְּכֶֽם:

26:28

'We have indeed seen that God is with you,' they replied. 'We propose that there now be a dread oath between you and us. Let us make a treaty with you, 
Vayomru ra'o ra'inu ki-hayah Adonay imach vanomer tehi na alah beynoteynu beyneynu uveynecha venichretah verit imach.

כחוַֽיֹּאמְר֗וּ רָא֣וֹ רָאִ֘ינוּ֘ כִּֽי־הָיָ֣ה יְהֹוָ֣ה | עִמָּךְ֒ וַנֹּ֗אמֶר תְּהִ֨י נָ֥א אָלָ֛ה בֵּֽינוֹתֵ֖ינוּ בֵּינֵ֣ינוּ וּבֵינֶ֑ךָ וְנִכְרְתָ֥ה בְרִ֖ית עִמָּֽךְ:

26:29

that just as we did not touch you, you will do no harm to us. We did only good to you and let you leave in peace. Now you are the one who is blessed by God.' 
Im-ta'aseh imanu ra'ah ka'asher lo nega'anucha vecha'asher asinu imcha rak-tov vaneshalechacha beshalom atah atah beruch Adonay.

כטאִם־תַּֽעֲשֵׂ֨ה עִמָּ֜נוּ רָעָ֗ה כַּֽאֲשֶׁר֙ לֹ֣א נְגַֽעֲנ֔וּךָ וְכַֽאֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשִׂ֤ינוּ עִמְּךָ֙ רַק־ט֔וֹב וַנְּשַׁלֵּֽחֲךָ֖ בְּשָׁל֑וֹם אַתָּ֥ה עַתָּ֖ה בְּר֥וּךְ יְהֹוָֽה:

26:30

Fifth Reading
[Isaac] prepared a feast for them, and they ate and drank. 
Vaya'as lahem mishteh vayochlu vayishtu.

לוַיַּ֤עַשׂ לָהֶם֙ מִשְׁתֶּ֔ה וַיֹּֽאכְל֖וּ וַיִּשְׁתּֽוּ:

26:31

They got up early in the morning, and made a mutual oath. Isaac then bid them farewell, and they left in peace. 
Vayashkimu vaboker vayishave'u ish le'achiv vayeshalechem Yitschak vayelechu me'ito beshalom.

לאוַיַּשְׁכִּ֣ימוּ בַבֹּ֔קֶר וַיִּשָּֽׁבְע֖וּ אִ֣ישׁ לְאָחִ֑יו וַיְשַׁלְּחֵ֣ם יִצְחָ֔ק וַיֵּֽלְכ֥וּ מֵֽאִתּ֖וֹ בְּשָׁלֽוֹם:

26:32

On that very day, Isaac's servants came and told him about the well they had been digging. 'We have found water!' they announced. 
Vayehi bayom hahu vayavo'u avdey Yitschak vayagidu lo al-odot habe'er asher chafaru vayomeru lo matsanu mayim.

לבוַיְהִ֣י | בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ עַבְדֵ֣י יִצְחָ֔ק וַיַּגִּ֣דוּ ל֔וֹ עַל־אֹד֥וֹת הַבְּאֵ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָפָ֑רוּ וַיֹּ֥אמְרוּ ל֖וֹ מָצָ֥אנוּ מָֽיִם:

26:33

[Isaac] named the well Shibah. The city is therefore called Beer-sheba to this very day. 
Vayikra otah Shiv'ah al-ken shem ha'ir Be'er Sheva ad hayom hazeh.

לגוַיִּקְרָ֥א אֹתָ֖הּ שִׁבְעָ֑ה עַל־כֵּ֤ן שֵֽׁם־הָעִיר֙ בְּאֵ֣ר שֶׁ֔בַע עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה:

26:34

When Esau was forty years old, he married Judithdaughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemathdaughter of Elon the Hittite. 
Vayehi Esav ben-arba'im shanah vayikach ishah et-Yehudit bat-Be'eri haChiti ve'et-Bosemat bat-Eylon haChiti.

לדוַיְהִ֤י עֵשָׂו֙ בֶּן־אַרְבָּעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה וַיִּקַּ֤ח אִשָּׁה֙ אֶת־יְהוּדִ֔ית בַּת־בְּאֵרִ֖י הַֽחִתִּ֑י וְאֶת־בָּ֣שְׂמַ֔ת בַּת־אֵילֹ֖ן הַֽחִתִּֽי:

26:35

[His wives] became a source of spiritual bitterness to Isaac and Rebecca. 
Vatihyena morat ruach le-Yitschak ule-Rivkah.

להוַתִּֽהְיֶ֖יןָ מֹ֣רַת ר֑וּחַ לְיִצְחָ֖ק וּלְרִבְקָֽה:
