Genesis - Chapter 35

35:1

God said to Jacob, 'Set out and go up to Beth El. Remain there and make an altar to [Me], the God who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.' 
Vayomer Elohim el-Ya'akov kum aleh Veyt-El veshev-sham va'aseh-sham mizbe'ach la-El hanir'eh eleycha bevorchacha mipeney Esav achicha.

אוַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶל־יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב ק֛וּם עֲלֵ֥ה בֵֽית־אֵ֖ל וְשֶׁב־שָׁ֑ם וַֽעֲשֵׂה־שָׁ֣ם מִזְבֵּ֔חַ לָאֵל֙ הַנִּרְאֶ֣ה אֵלֶ֔יךָ בְּבָ֨רְחֲךָ֔ מִפְּנֵ֖י עֵשָׂ֥ו אָחִֽיךָ:

35:2

Jacob said to his family and everyone with him, 'Get rid of theidolatrous artifacts that you have. Purify yourselves and change your clothes. 
Vayomer Ya'akov el-beyto ve'el kol-asher imo hasiru et-elohey hanechar asher betochechem vehitaharu vehachalifu simloteychem.

בוַיֹּ֤אמֶר יַֽעֲקֹב֙ אֶל־בֵּית֔וֹ וְאֶ֖ל כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר עִמּ֑וֹ הָסִ֜רוּ אֶת־אֱלֹהֵ֤י הַנֵּכָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּתֹֽכְכֶ֔ם וְהִטַּֽהֲר֔וּ וְהַֽחֲלִ֖יפוּ שִׂמְלֹֽתֵיכֶֽם:

35:3

We are setting out and going up to Beth El. There I will make an altar to God, who answered me in my time of trouble, and who has been with me on the journey that I have taken.' 
Venakumah vena'aleh Beyt-El ve'e'eseh-sham mizbe'ach la-El ha'oneh oti beyom tsarati vayehi imadi baderech asher halachti.

גוְנָק֥וּמָה וְנַֽעֲלֶ֖ה בֵּֽית־אֵ֑ל וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה־שָּׁ֣ם מִזְבֵּ֗חַ לָאֵ֞ל הָֽעֹנֶ֤ה אֹתִי֙ בְּי֣וֹם צָֽרָתִ֔י וַֽיְהִי֙ עִמָּדִ֔י בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָלָֽכְתִּי:

35:4

They gave Jacob all the idolatrous artifacts that they had, even the rings in their ears. Jacob buried them under the terebinth tree near Shechem. 
Vayitnu el-Ya'akov et kol-elohey hanechar asher beyadam ve'et-hanezamim asher be'ozneyhem vayitmon otam Ya'akov tachat ha'elah asher im-Shchem.

דוַיִּתְּנ֣וּ אֶל־יַֽעֲקֹ֗ב אֵ֣ת כָּל־אֱלֹהֵ֤י הַנֵּכָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיָדָ֔ם וְאֶת־הַנְּזָמִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּאָזְנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּטְמֹ֤ן אֹתָם֙ יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב תַּ֥חַת הָֽאֵלָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר עִם־שְׁכֶֽם:

35:5

They began their journey. The terror of God was felt in all the cities around them, and they did not pursue Jacob's sons. 
Vayisa'u vayehi chitat Elohim al-he'arim asher svivoteyhem velo radfu acharey beney Ya'akov.

הוַיִּסָּ֑עוּ וַיְהִ֣י | חִתַּ֣ת אֱלֹהִ֗ים עַל־הֶֽעָרִים֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ סְבִיב֣וֹתֵיהֶ֔ם וְלֹ֣א רָֽדְפ֔וּ אַֽחֲרֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יַֽעֲקֹֽב:

35:6

Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz in the land of Canaan - that is, to Beth El. 
Vayavo Ya'akov Luzah asher be'erets Kna'an hi Beyt-El hu vechol-ha'am asher-imo.

ווַיָּבֹ֨א יַֽעֲקֹ֜ב ל֗וּזָה אֲשֶׁר֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן הִ֖וא בֵּֽית־אֵ֑ל ה֖וּא וְכָל־הָעָ֥ם אֲשֶׁר־עִמּֽוֹ:

35:7

He built an altar there, and he named the place Beth El's God (El Beth El), since this was the place where God was revealed to him when he was fleeing from his brother. 
Vayiven sham mizbe'ach vayikra lamakom El Beyt-El ki sham niglu elav ha'Elohim bevorecho mipeney achiv.

זוַיִּ֤בֶן שָׁם֙ מִזְבֵּ֔חַ וַיִּקְרָא֙ לַמָּק֔וֹם אֵ֖ל בֵּֽית־אֵ֑ל כִּ֣י שָׁ֗ם נִגְל֤וּ אֵלָיו֙ הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים בְּבָרְח֖וֹ מִפְּנֵ֥י אָחִֽיו:

35:8

Rebecca's nurse Deborah died, and she was buried in the valley of Beth El, under the oak. It was named Weeping Oak (Alon Bakhuth). 
Vatamot Dvorah meyneket Rivkah vatikaver mitachat leVeyt-El tachat ha'alon vayikra shmo Alon Bachut.

חוַתָּ֤מָת דְּבֹרָה֙ מֵינֶ֣קֶת רִבְקָ֔ה וַתִּקָּבֵ֛ר מִתַּ֥חַת לְבֵֽית־אֵ֖ל תַּ֣חַת הָֽאַלּ֑וֹן וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ אַלּ֥וֹן בָּכֽוּת:

35:9

Now that Jacob had returned from Padan Aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him. 
Vayera Elohim el-Ya'akov od bevo'o miPadan Aram vayevarech oto.

טוַיֵּרָ֨א אֱלֹהִ֤ים אֶל־יַֽעֲקֹב֙ ע֔וֹד בְּבֹא֖וֹ מִפַּדַּ֣ן אֲרָ֑ם וַיְבָ֖רֶךְ אֹתֽוֹ:

35:10

God said to him, 'Your name is Jacob. But your name will not be only Jacob; you will also have Israel as a name.' [God thus] named him Israel. 
Vayomer-lo Elohim shimcha Ya'akov lo-yikare shimcha od Ya'akov ki im-Yisra'el yihyeh shmecha vayikra et-shmo Yisra'el.

יוַיֹּֽאמֶר־ל֥וֹ אֱלֹהִ֖ים שִׁמְךָ֣ יַֽעֲקֹ֑ב לֹֽא־יִקָּרֵא֩ שִׁמְךָ֨ ע֜וֹד יַֽעֲקֹ֗ב כִּ֤י אִם־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ יִֽהְיֶ֣ה שְׁמֶ֔ךָ וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל:

 

35:11

God said to him, 'I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and increase. A nation and a community of nations will come into existence from youKings will be born from your loins. 
Vayomer lo Elohim ani El-Shaday preh urveh goy ukehal goyim yihyeh mimeka umelachim mechalatseycha yetse'u.

יאוַיֹּ֩אמֶר֩ ל֨וֹ אֱלֹהִ֜ים אֲנִ֨י אֵ֤ל שַׁדַּי֙ פְּרֵ֣ה וּרְבֵ֔ה גּ֛וֹי וּקְהַ֥ל גּוֹיִ֖ם יִֽהְיֶ֣ה מִמֶּ֑ךָּ וּמְלָכִ֖ים מֵֽחֲלָצֶ֥יךָ יֵצֵֽאוּ:

35:12

Sixth Reading
I will grant you the land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac. I will also give the land to your descendants who will follow you.' 
Ve'et-ha'arets asher natati le-Avraham ule-Yitschak lecha etnenah ulezar'acha achareycha eten et-ha'arets.

יבוְאֶת־הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֛תִּי לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם וּלְיִצְחָ֖ק לְךָ֣ אֶתְּנֶ֑נָּה וּלְזַרְעֲךָ֥ אַֽחֲרֶ֖יךָ אֶתֵּ֥ן אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ:

35:13

God went up and left [Jacob] in the place where He had spoken to him. 
Vaya'al me'alav Elohim bamakom asher-diber ito.

יגוַיַּ֥עַל מֵֽעָלָ֖יו אֱלֹהִ֑ים בַּמָּק֖וֹם אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר אִתּֽוֹ:

35:14

Jacob had set up a pillar in the place that God had spoken to him. He [now] offered a libation on it, and then poured oil on it.
Vayatsev Ya'akov matsevah bamakom asher-diber ito matsevet aven vayasech aleyha nesech vayitsok aleyha shamen.

ידוַיַּצֵּ֨ב יַֽעֲקֹ֜ב מַצֵּבָ֗ה בַּמָּק֛וֹם אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר אִתּ֖וֹ מַצֶּ֣בֶת אָ֑בֶן וַיַּסֵּ֤ךְ עָלֶ֨יהָ֙ נֶ֔סֶךְ וַיִּצֹ֥ק עָלֶ֖יהָ שָֽׁמֶן:

35:15

Jacob had named the place where God had spoken to himBeth El (God's Temple). 
Vayikra Ya'akov et-shem hamakom asher diber ito sham Elohim Beyt-El.

טווַיִּקְרָ֨א יַֽעֲקֹ֜ב אֶת־שֵׁ֣ם הַמָּק֗וֹם אֲשֶׁר֩ דִּבֶּ֨ר אִתּ֥וֹ שָׁ֛ם אֱלֹהִ֖ים בֵּֽית־אֵֽל:

35:16

They moved on from Beth El, and were some distance fromEphrath when Rachel began to give birth. Her labor was extremely difficult. 
Vayis'u mi-Beyt El vayehi-od kivrat-ha'arets lavo Efratah vateled Rachel vatekash belidetah.

טזוַיִּסְעוּ֙ מִבֵּ֣ית אֵ֔ל וַֽיְהִי־ע֥וֹד כִּבְרַת־הָאָ֖רֶץ לָב֣וֹא אֶפְרָ֑תָה וַתֵּ֥לֶד רָחֵ֖ל וַתְּקַ֥שׁ בְּלִדְתָּֽהּ:

35:17

When her labor was at its worst, the midwife said to her, 'Don't be afraid. This one will also be a son for you.' 
Vayehi behakshotah belidetah vatomer lah hameyaledet al-tire'i ki-gam-zeh lach ben.

יזוַיְהִ֥י בְהַקְשֹׁתָ֖הּ בְּלִדְתָּ֑הּ וַתֹּ֨אמֶר לָ֤הּ הַֽמְיַלֶּ֨דֶת֙ אַל־תִּ֣ירְאִ֔י כִּֽי־גַם־זֶ֥ה לָ֖ךְ בֵּֽן:

35:18

She was dying, and as she breathed her last, she named the child Ben-oni (My Sorrow's Son). His father called himBenjamin. 
Vayehi betset nafshah ki metah vatikra shmo Ben-Oni ve'aviv kara-lo Vinyamin.

יחוַיְהִ֞י בְּצֵ֤את נַפְשָׁהּ֙ כִּ֣י מֵ֔תָה וַתִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ בֶּן־אוֹנִ֑י וְאָבִ֖יו קָֽרָא־ל֥וֹ בִנְיָמִֽין:

35:19

Rachel died and was buried on the road to Ephrath, now known as Bethlehem. 
Vatamot Rachel vatikaver bederech Efratah hi Beyt Lachem.

יטוַתָּ֖מָת רָחֵ֑ל וַתִּקָּבֵר֙ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ אֶפְרָ֔תָה הִ֖וא בֵּ֥ית לָֽחֶם:

35:20

Jacob set up a monument on her grave. This is the monument that is on Rachel's grave to this very day. 
Vayatsev Ya'akov matsevah al-kvuratah hi matsevet kevurat Rachel ad-hayom.

כוַיַּצֵּ֧ב יַֽעֲקֹ֛ב מַצֵּבָ֖ה עַל־קְבֻֽרָתָ֑הּ הִ֛וא מַצֶּ֥בֶת קְבֻֽרַת־רָחֵ֖ל עַד־הַיּֽוֹם:

35:21

Israel traveled on, and he set up his tent beyond Herd Tower (Migdal Eder). 
Vayisa Yisra'el vayet aholoh mehal'ah le-Migdal-Eder.

כאוַיִּסַּ֖ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיֵּ֣ט אָֽהֳלֹ֔ה מֵהָ֖לְאָה לְמִגְדַּל־עֵֽדֶר:

35:22

While Jacob was living undisturbed in the area, Reuben went and disturbed the sleeping arrangements of Bilhah, his father's concubine. Jacob heard about it.

Jacob had twelve sons. 
Vayehi bishkon Yisra'el ba'arets hahi vayelech Re'uven vayishkav et-Bilhah pilegesh aviv vayishma Yisra'el.

כבוַיְהִ֗י בִּשְׁכֹּ֤ן יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַהִ֔וא וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ רְאוּבֵ֔ן וַיִּשְׁכַּ֕ב֙ אֶת־בִּלְהָ֖ה֙ פִּילֶ֣גֶשׁ אָבִ֑֔יו וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע יִשְׂרָאֵֽ֑ל פ וַיִּֽהְי֥וּ בְנֵי־יַֽעֲקֹ֖ב שְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָֽׂר:

35:23

The sons of Leah were Reuben (Jacob's first-born), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. 
Vayihyu veney-Ya'akov shneym-asar. Bney Leah bechor Ya'akov Re'uven veShim'on veLevi viYehudah veYisachar uZvulun.

כגבְּנֵ֣י לֵאָ֔ה בְּכ֥וֹר יַֽעֲקֹ֖ב רְאוּבֵ֑ן וְשִׁמְעוֹן֙ וְלֵוִ֣י וִֽיהוּדָ֔ה וְיִשָּׂשכָ֖ר וּזְבֻלֽוּן:

35:24

The sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin. 
Beney Rachel Yosef uVinyamin.

כדבְּנֵ֣י רָחֵ֔ל יוֹסֵ֖ף וּבִנְיָמִֽן:

35:25

The sons of Rachel's handmaid Bilhah were Dan and Naphtali. 
Uvney Vilhah shifchat Rachel Dan veNaftali.

כהוּבְנֵ֤י בִלְהָה֙ שִׁפְחַ֣ת רָחֵ֔ל דָּ֖ן וְנַפְתָּלִֽי:

35:26

The sons of Leah's handmaid Zilpah were Gad and Asher.

These are the sons born to Jacob in Padan Aram. 
Uveney Zilpah shifchat Leah Gad ve'Asher eleh beney Ya'akov asher yulad-lo beFadan Aram.

כווּבְנֵ֥י זִלְפָּ֛ה שִׁפְחַ֥ת לֵאָ֖ה גָּ֣ד וְאָשֵׁ֑ר אֵ֚לֶּה בְּנֵ֣י יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב אֲשֶׁ֥ר יֻלַּד־ל֖וֹ בְּפַדַּ֥ן אֲרָֽם:

35:27

Jacob thus came to his father Isaac in Mamre, at Kiryath Arba, better known as Hebron. This is where Abraham and Isaac had resided. 
Vayavo Ya'akov el-Yitschak aviv Mamre Kiryat ha'Arba hi Chevron asher-gar-sham Avraham veYitschak.

כזוַיָּבֹ֤א יַֽעֲקֹב֙ אֶל־יִצְחָ֣ק אָבִ֔יו מַמְרֵ֖א קִרְיַ֣ת הָֽאַרְבַּ֑ע הִ֣וא חֶבְר֔וֹן אֲשֶׁר־גָּֽר־שָׁ֥ם אַבְרָהָ֖ם וְיִצְחָֽק:

35:28

Isaac lived to be 180 years old. 
Vayihyu yemey Yitschak me'at shanah ushmonim shanah.

כחוַיִּֽהְי֖וּ יְמֵ֣י יִצְחָ֑ק מְאַ֥ת שָׁנָ֖ה וּשְׁמֹנִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה:

35:29

He breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people, old and in the fullness of his years. His sons, Esau and Jacob,buried him. 
Vayigva Yitschak vayamot vaye'asef el-amav zaken usva yamim vayikberu oto Esav veYa'akov banav.

כטוַיִּגְוַ֨ע יִצְחָ֤ק וַיָּ֨מָת֙ וַיֵּאָ֣סֶף אֶל־עַמָּ֔יו זָקֵ֖ן וּשְׂבַ֣ע יָמִ֑ים וַיִּקְבְּר֣וּ אֹת֔וֹ עֵשָׂ֥ו וְיַֽעֲקֹ֖ב בָּנָֽיו:
