36:1

These are the chronicles of Esau, also known as Edom. 
Ve'eleh toldot Esav hu Edom.

אוְאֵ֛לֶּה תֹּֽלְד֥וֹת עֵשָׂ֖ו ה֥וּא אֱדֽוֹם:

36:2

Esau took wives from the daughters of Canaan. These were Adah, daughter of Elon the Hittite, andOholibamah, daughter of Anah, daughter of Tziv'onthe Hivite. 
Esav lakach et-nashav mibenot Kena'an et-Adah bat-Eylon haChiti ve'et-Aholivamah bat-Anah bat-Tsiv'on haChivi.

בעֵשָׂ֛ו לָקַ֥ח אֶת־נָשָׁ֖יו מִבְּנ֣וֹת כְּנָ֑עַן אֶת־עָדָ֗ה בַּת־אֵילוֹן֙ הַֽחִתִּ֔י וְאֶת־אָֽהֳלִֽיבָמָה֙ בַּת־עֲנָ֔ה בַּת־צִבְע֖וֹן הַֽחִוִּֽי:

36:3

[He also married] Basemath, daughter of Ishmael [and] sister of Nebayoth. 
Ve'et Bosmat bat-Yishma'el achot Nevayot.

גוְאֶת־בָּשְׂמַ֥ת בַּת־יִשְׁמָעֵ֖אל אֲח֥וֹת נְבָיֽוֹת:

36:4

Adah bore Esau's son Eliphaz.

Basemath bore Reuel. 
Vateled Adah le-Esav et-Elifaz uVosmat yaldah et-Re'u'el.

דוַתֵּ֧לֶד עָדָ֛ה לְעֵשָׂ֖ו אֶת־אֱלִיפָ֑ז וּבָ֣שְׂמַ֔ת יָלְדָ֖ה אֶת־רְעוּאֵֽל:

36:5

Oholibamah bore Yeush, Yalam, and Korach.

The above are Esau's sons who were born in the land of Canaan.
Ve'Aholivamah yaldah et-Ye'ush ve'et-Yalam ve'et-Korach eleh bney Esav asher yuldu-lo be'erets Kna'an.

הוְאָֽהֳלִֽיבָמָה֙ יָֽלְדָ֔ה אֶת־יְע֥וּשׁ (כתיב את־יעיש)וְאֶת־יַעְלָ֖ם וְאֶת־קֹ֑רַח אֵ֚לֶּה בְּנֵ֣י עֵשָׂ֔ו אֲשֶׁ֥ר יֻלְּדוּ־ל֖וֹ בְּאֶ֥רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן:

36:6

Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, all the members of his household, his livestock animals, and all the possessions that he had acquired in the land of Canaan, and he moved to another area, away from his brother Jacob. 
Vayikach Esav et-nashav ve'et-banav ve'et-benotav ve'et-kol-nafshot beyto ve'et-miknehu ve'et-kol-behemto ve'et kol-kinyano asher rachash be'erets Kena'an vayelech el-erets mipney Ya'akov achiv.

ווַיִּקַּ֣ח עֵשָׂ֡ו אֶת־נָ֠שָׁ֠יו וְאֶת־בָּנָ֣יו וְאֶת־בְּנֹתָיו֘ וְאֶת־כָּל־נַפְשׁ֣וֹת בֵּיתוֹ֒ וְאֶת־מִקְנֵ֣הוּ וְאֶת־כָּל־בְּהֶמְתּ֗וֹ וְאֵת֙ כָּל־קִנְיָנ֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר רָכַ֖שׁ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ אֶל־אֶ֔רֶץ מִפְּנֵ֖י יַֽעֲקֹ֥ב אָחִֽיו:

36:7

This was because they had too much property to be able to live together. Because of all their livestock, the land where they were staying could not support them. 
Ki-hayah rechusham rav mishevet yachdav velo yachlah erets megureyhem laset otam mipeney mikneyhem.

זכִּֽי־הָיָ֧ה רְכוּשָׁ֛ם רָ֖ב מִשֶּׁ֣בֶת יַחְדָּ֑ו וְלֹ֨א יָֽכְלָ֜ה אֶ֤רֶץ מְגֽוּרֵיהֶם֙ לָשֵׂ֣את אֹתָ֔ם מִפְּנֵ֖י מִקְנֵיהֶֽם:

36:8

Esau therefore settled in the hill country of Seir. There Esau became [the nation of] Edom. 
Vayeshev Esav beHar Se'ir Esav hu Edom.

חוַיֵּ֤שֶׁב עֵשָׂו֙ בְּהַ֣ר שֵׂעִ֔יר עֵשָׂ֖ו ה֥וּא אֱדֽוֹם:

36:9

These are the chronicles of Esau, the ancestor of Edom, in the hill country of Seir: 
Ve'eleh toldot Esav avi Edom beHar Se'ir.

טוְאֵ֛לֶּה תֹּֽלְד֥וֹת עֵשָׂ֖ו אֲבִ֣י אֱד֑וֹם בְּהַ֖ר שֵׂעִֽיר:

36:10

These are the names of Esau's sons:

Eliphaz, son of Esau's wife Adah;

Reuel, son of Esau's wife Basemath. 
Eleh shmot beney-Esav Elifaz ben-Adah eshet Esav Re'u'el ben-Bosmat eshet Esav.

יאֵ֖לֶּה שְׁמ֣וֹת בְּנֵֽי־עֵשָׂ֑ו אֱלִיפַ֗ז בֶּן־עָדָה֙ אֵ֣שֶׁת עֵשָׂ֔ו רְעוּאֵ֕ל בֶּן־בָּשְׂמַ֖ת אֵ֥שֶׁת עֵשָֽׂו:

36:11

The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Tzefo, Gatam, andKenaz. 
Vayihyu bney Elifaz Teyman Omar Tsfo veGatam uKnaz.

יאוַיִּֽהְי֖וּ בְּנֵ֣י אֱלִיפָ֑ז תֵּימָ֣ן אוֹמָ֔ר צְפ֥וֹ וְגַעְתָּ֖ם וּקְנַֽז:

36:12

Timna became the concubine of Esau's son Eliphaz, and she bore Eliphaz's son Amalek. All these are the descendants of Esau's wife Adah. 
VeTimna hayetah filegesh le-Elifaz ben-Esav vateled le-Elifaz et-Amalek eleh bney Adah eshet Esav.

יבוְתִמְנַ֣ע | הָֽיְתָ֣ה פִילֶ֗גֶשׁ לֶֽאֱלִיפַז֙ בֶּן־עֵשָׂ֔ו וַתֵּ֥לֶד לֶאֱלִיפַ֖ז אֶת־עֲמָלֵ֑ק אֵ֕לֶּה בְּנֵ֥י עָדָ֖ה אֵ֥שֶׁת עֵשָֽׂו:

36:13

These are the sons of Reuel: Nachath, Zerach, Shamah, and Mizzah. These are the descendants of Esau's wife Basemath. 
Ve'eleh bney Re'u'el Nachat vaZerach Shamah uMizah eleh hayu bney Vosmat eshet Esav.

יגוְאֵ֨לֶּה֙ בְּנֵ֣י רְעוּאֵ֔ל נַ֥חַת וָזֶ֖רַח שַׁמָּ֣ה וּמִזָּ֑ה אֵ֣לֶּה הָי֔וּ בְּנֵ֥י בָשְׂמַ֖ת אֵ֥שֶׁת עֵשָֽׂו:

36:14

These are the sons of Esau's wife Oholibamah, daughter of Anah, daughter of Tziv'on: By Esau she had Yeush, Yalam, and Korach. 
Ve'eleh hayu beney Aholivamah vat-Anah bat-Tsiv'on eshet Esav vateled le-Esav et-Ye'ush ve'et-Yalam ve'et-Korach.

ידוְאֵ֣לֶּה הָי֗וּ בְּנֵ֨י אָֽהֳלִֽיבָמָ֧ה בַת־עֲנָ֛ה בַּת־צִבְע֖וֹן אֵ֣שֶׁת עֵשָׂ֑ו וַתֵּ֣לֶד לְעֵשָׂ֔ו אֶת־יְע֥וּשׁ(כתיב את־יעיש) וְאֶת־יַעְלָ֖ם וְאֶת־קֹֽרַח:

36:15

These are the [original] tribal chiefs among the children of Esau:

The sons of Esau's firstborn Eliphaz: Chief Teman, Chief Omar, Chief Tzefo, Chief Kenaz, 
Eleh alufey vney-Esav beney Elifaz bechor Esav aluf Teyman aluf Omar aluf Tsfo aluf Knaz.

טואֵ֖לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־עֵשָׂ֑ו בְּנֵ֤י אֱלִיפַז֙ בְּכ֣וֹר עֵשָׂ֔ו אַלּ֤וּף תֵּימָן֙ אַלּ֣וּף אוֹמָ֔ר אַלּ֥וּף צְפ֖וֹ אַלּ֥וּף קְנַֽז:

36:16

Chief Korach, Chief Gatam, Chief Amalek. These were the tribal chiefs from Eliphaz in the land of Edom. The above were descendants of Adah. 
Aluf-Korach aluf Gatam aluf Amalek eleh alufey Elifaz be'erets Edom eleh beney Adah.

טזאַלּ֥וּף קֹ֛רַח אַלּ֥וּף גַּעְתָּ֖ם אַלּ֣וּף עֲמָלֵ֑ק אֵ֣לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֤י אֱלִיפַז֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ אֱד֔וֹם אֵ֖לֶּה בְּנֵ֥י עָדָֽה:

יזוְאֵ֗לֶּה בְּנֵ֤י רְעוּאֵל֙ בֶּן־עֵשָׂ֔ו אַלּ֥וּף נַ֨חַת֙ אַלּ֣וּף זֶ֔רַח אַלּ֥וּף שַׁמָּ֖ה אַלּ֣וּף מִזָּ֑ה אֵ֣לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֤י רְעוּאֵל֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ אֱד֔וֹם אֵ֕לֶּה בְּנֵ֥י בָֽשְׂמַ֖ת אֵ֥שֶׁת עֵשָֽׂו:

36:18

These are the sons of Esau's wife Oholibamah: Chief Yeush, Chief Yalam, Chief Korach. These are the tribal chiefs from Esau's wife Oholibamah, daughter of Anah. 
Ve'eleh beney Aholivamah eshet Esav aluf Ye'ush aluf Yalam aluf Korach eleh alufey Aholivamah bat-Anah eshet Esav.

יחוְאֵ֗לֶּה בְּנֵ֤י אָֽהֳלִֽיבָמָה֙ אֵ֣שֶׁת עֵשָׂ֔ו אַלּ֥וּף יְע֛וּשׁ אַלּ֥וּף יַעְלָ֖ם אַלּ֣וּף קֹ֑רַח אֵ֣לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֞י אָֽהֳלִֽיבָמָ֛ה בַּת־עֲנָ֖ה אֵ֥שֶׁת עֵשָֽׂו:

36:19

These are the sons of Esau, and these are their tribal chiefs. This is what constitutes Edom. 
Eleh vney-Esav ve'eleh alufeyhem hu Edom.

יטאֵ֧לֶּה בְנֵֽי־עֵשָׂ֛ו וְאֵ֥לֶּה אַלּֽוּפֵיהֶ֖ם ה֥וּא אֱדֽוֹם:

36:20

Seventh Reading
These are the children of Seir the Horite, the [original] inhabitants of the land: Lotan, Shoval, Tziv'on, Anah, 
Eleh vney-Se'ir haChori yoshvey ha'arets Lotan veShoval veTsiv'on va'Anah.

כאֵ֤לֶּה בְנֵֽי־שֵׂעִיר֙ הַֽחֹרִ֔י יֽשְׁבֵ֖י הָאָ֑רֶץ לוֹטָ֥ן וְשׁוֹבָ֖ל וְצִבְע֥וֹן וַֽעֲנָֽה:

36:21

Dishon, Etzer, Dishan. These were the tribal chiefs of the Horites among the sons of Seir in the land of Edom. 
VeDishon ve'etser veDishan eleh alufey haChori bney Se'ir be'erets Edom.

כאוְדִשׁ֥וֹן וְאֵ֖צֶר וְדִישָׁ֑ן אֵ֣לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֧י הַֽחֹרִ֛י בְּנֵ֥י שֵׂעִ֖יר בְּאֶ֥רֶץ אֱדֽוֹם:

36:22

The sons of Lotan were Chori and Hemam. Lotan's sister was Timna. 
Vayihyu veney Lotan Chori veHeymam va'achot Lotan Timna.

כבוַיִּֽהְי֥וּ בְנֵֽי־לוֹטָ֖ן חֹרִ֣י וְהֵימָ֑ם וַֽאֲח֥וֹת לוֹטָ֖ן תִּמְנָֽע:

36:23

These are the sons of Shoval: Alvan, Manachath, Ebhal, Shefo, and Onam. 
Ve'eleh bney Shoval Alvan uManachat ve'Eyval Shfo ve'Onam.

כגוְאֵ֨לֶּה֙ בְּנֵ֣י שׁוֹבָ֔ל עַלְוָ֥ן וּמָנַ֖חַת וְעֵיבָ֑ל שְׁפ֖וֹ וְאוֹנָֽם:

36:24

These are the children of Tziv'on: Ayah and Anah. Anah was the one who discovered [how to breed]mules in the desert when he was tending the donkeys for his father Tziv'on. 
Ve'eleh vney-Tsiv'on ve'Ayah va'Anah hu Anah asher matsa et-hayemim bamidbar bir'oto et-haChamorim le-Tsiv'on aviv.

כדוְאֵ֥לֶּה בְנֵֽי־צִבְע֖וֹן וְאַיָּ֣ה וַֽעֲנָ֑ה ה֣וּא עֲנָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר מָצָ֤א אֶת־הַיֵּמִם֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר בִּרְעֹת֥וֹ אֶת־הַֽחֲמֹרִ֖ים לְצִבְע֥וֹן אָבִֽיו:

36:25

These are the children of Anah: Dishon andOholibamah daughter of Anah. 
Ve'eleh vney-Anah Dishon ve'Aholivamah bat-Anah.

כהוְאֵ֥לֶּה בְנֵֽי־עֲנָ֖ה דִּשֹׁ֑ן וְאָֽהֳלִֽיבָמָ֖ה בַּת־עֲנָֽה:

36:26

These are the sons of Dishon: Chemdan, Eshban,Yithran and Keran. 
Ve'eleh bney Dishan Chemdan ve'Eshban veYitran uChran.

כווְאֵ֖לֶּה בְּנֵ֣י דִישָׁ֑ן חֶמְדָּ֥ן וְאֶשְׁבָּ֖ן וְיִתְרָ֥ן וּכְרָֽן:

36:27

These are the sons of Etzer: Bilhan, Zaavan, andAkan. 
Eleh bney-Etser Bilhan veZa'avan va'Akan.

כזאֵ֖לֶּה בְּנֵי־אֵ֑צֶר בִּלְהָ֥ן וְזַעֲוָ֖ן וַֽעֲקָֽן:

36:28

These are the sons of Dishan: Utz and Aran. 
Eleh vney-Dishan Uts va'Aran.

כחאֵ֥לֶּה בְנֵֽי־דִישָׁ֖ן ע֥וּץ וַֽאֲרָֽן:

36:29

These are the tribal chiefs of the Horites: Chief Lotan, Chief Shoval, Chief Tziv'on, Chief Anah, 
Eleh alufey haChori aluf Lotan aluf Shoval aluf Tsiv'on aluf Anah.

כטאֵ֖לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֣י הַֽחֹרִ֑י אַלּ֤וּף לוֹטָן֙ אַלּ֣וּף שׁוֹבָ֔ל אַלּ֥וּף צִבְע֖וֹן אַלּ֥וּף עֲנָֽה:

לאַלּ֥וּף דִּשֹׁ֛ן אַלּ֥וּף אֵ֖צֶר אַלּ֣וּף דִּישָׁ֑ן אֵ֣לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֧י הַֽחֹרִ֛י לְאַלֻּֽפֵיהֶ֖ם בְּאֶ֥רֶץ שֵׂעִֽיר:

36:31

These are the kings who ruled in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the Israelites. 
Ve'eleh hamelachim asher malchu be'erets Edom lifney meloch-melech livney Yisra'el.

לאוְאֵ֨לֶּה֙ הַמְּלָכִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר מָלְכ֖וּ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ אֱד֑וֹם לִפְנֵ֥י מְלָךְ־מֶ֖לֶךְ לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל:

36:32

Bela son of Beor became king of Edom, and the name of hiscapital was Dinhava. 
Vayimloch be'Edom Bela ben-Be'or veshem iro Dinhavah.

לבוַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ בֶּֽאֱד֔וֹם בֶּ֖לַע בֶּן־בְּע֑וֹר וְשֵׁ֥ם עִיר֖וֹ דִּנְהָֽבָה:

36:33

Bela died, and he was succeeded as king by Yovav son ofZerach from Botzrah. 
Vayamot Bala vayimloch tachtav Yovav ben-Zerach mi-Batsrah.

לגוַיָּ֖מָת בָּ֑לַע וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו יוֹבָ֥ב בֶּן־זֶ֖רַח מִבָּצְרָֽה:

36:34

Yovav died, and he was succeeded as king by Chusham from the land of the Temanites. 
Vayamot Yovav vayimloch tachtav Chusham me'erets haTeymani.

לדוַיָּ֖מָת יוֹבָ֑ב וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו חֻשָׁ֖ם מֵאֶ֥רֶץ הַתֵּֽימָנִֽי:

36:35

Chusham died, and he was succeeded as king by Hadad son of Badad, who defeated Midian in the field of Moab. The name of his capital was Avith. 
Vayamot Chusham vayimloch tachtav Hadad ben-Bedad hamakeh et-Midyan bisdeh Mo'av veshem iro Avit.

להוַיָּ֖מָת חֻשָׁ֑ם וַיִּמְלֹ֨ךְ תַּחְתָּ֜יו הֲדַ֣ד בֶּן־בְּדַ֗ד הַמַּכֶּ֤ה אֶת־מִדְיָן֙ בִּשְׂדֵ֣ה מוֹאָ֔ב וְשֵׁ֥ם עִיר֖וֹ עֲוִֽית:

36:36

Hadad died, and he was succeeded as king by Samlah ofMasrekah. 
Vayamot Hadad vayimloch tachtav Samlah mi-Masrekah.

לווַיָּ֖מָת הֲדָ֑ד וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו שַׂמְלָ֖ה מִמַּשְׂרֵקָֽה:

36:37

Samlah died, and he was succeeded as king by Saulfrom Rechovoth-on-the-River (Rechovoth HaNahar).
Vayamot Samlah vayimloch tachtav Sha'ul meRchovot haNahar.

לזוַיָּ֖מָת שַׂמְלָ֑ה וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו שָׁא֖וּל מֵֽרְחֹב֥וֹת הַנָּהָֽר:

36:38

Saul died, and he was succeeded as king by Baal Chanan son of Akhbor. 
Vayamot Sha'ul vayimloch tachtav Ba'al Chanan ben-Achbor.

לחוַיָּ֖מָת שָׁא֑וּל וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו בַּ֥עַל חָנָ֖ן בֶּן־עַכְבּֽוֹר:

36:39

Baal Chanan son of Akhbor died, and he was succeeded as king by Hadar. The name of his capital was Pau. His wife's name was Meheitaval, daughter of Matred, daughter of May Zahav. 
Vayamot Ba'al Chanan ben-Achbor vayimloch tachtav Hadar veshem iro Pa'u veshem ishto Meheytav'el bat- Matred bat Mey Zahav.

לטוַיָּ֘מָת֘ בַּ֣עַל חָנָ֣ן בֶּן־עַכְבּוֹר֒ וַיִּמְלֹ֤ךְ תַּחְתָּיו֙ הֲדַ֔ר וְשֵׁ֥ם עִיר֖וֹ פָּ֑עוּ וְשֵׁ֨ם אִשְׁתּ֤וֹ מְהֵֽיטַבְאֵל֙ בַּת־מַטְרֵ֔ד בַּ֖ת מֵ֥י זָהָֽב:

36:40

Last Reading
These are the names of the tribes of Esau,according to their families in their respective areas, named after [individuals]: The tribe ofTimna, the tribe of Alvah, the tribe of Yetheth, 
Ve'eleh shemot alufey Esav lemishpechotam limekomotam bishmotam aluf Timna aluf Alvah aluf Yetet.

מוְאֵ֠לֶּה שְׁמ֞וֹת אַלּוּפֵ֤י עֵשָׂו֙ לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֔ם לִמְקֹֽמֹתָ֖ם בִּשְׁמֹתָ֑ם אַלּ֥וּף תִּמְנָ֛ע אַלּ֥וּף עַלְוָ֖ה אַלּ֥וּף יְתֵֽת:

36:41

the tribe of Oholibamah, the tribe of Elah, the tribe ofPinon, 
Aluf Aholivamah aluf Elah aluf Pinon.

מאאַלּ֧וּף אָֽהֳלִֽיבָמָ֛ה אַלּ֥וּף אֵלָ֖ה אַלּ֥וּף פִּינֹֽן:

36:42

the tribe of Kenaz, the tribe of Teman, the tribe ofMibtzar, 
Aluf Knaz aluf Teyman aluf Mivtsar.

מבאַלּ֥וּף קְנַ֛ז אַלּ֥וּף תֵּימָ֖ן אַלּ֥וּף מִבְצָֽר:

36:43

the tribe of Magdiel, the tribe of Iram.

These are the tribes of Esau, each with its own settlements in its hereditary lands. This is how Esau was the ancestor of the Edomites.

מגאַלּ֥וּף מַגְדִּיאֵ֖ל אַלּ֣וּף עִירָ֑ם אֵ֣לֶּה | אַלּוּפֵ֣י אֱד֗וֹם לְמֽשְׁבֹתָם֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ אֲחֻזָּתָ֔ם ה֥וּא עֵשָׂ֖ו אֲבִ֥י אֱדֽוֹם:
