37:1

First Reading
Meanwhile, Jacob settled in the area where his father had lived in the land of Canaan. 
Vayeshev Ya'akov be'erets megurey aviv be'erets Kna'an.

אוַיֵּ֣שֶׁב יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב בְּאֶ֖רֶץ מְגוּרֵ֣י אָבִ֑יו בְּאֶ֖רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן:

37:2

These are the chronicles of Jacob:

Josesph was 17 years old. As a lad, he would tend the sheep with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives. Joseph brought his father a bad report about them. 
Eleh toldot Ya'akov Yosef ben-shva-esreh shanah hayah ro'eh et-echav batson vehu na'ar et-beney Vilhah ve'et-beney Zilpah neshey aviv vayave Yosef et-dibatam ra'ah el-avihem.

באֵ֣לֶּה | תֹּֽלְד֣וֹת יַֽעֲקֹ֗ב יוֹסֵ֞ף בֶּן־שְׁבַע־עֶשְׂרֵ֤ה שָׁנָה֙ הָיָ֨ה רֹעֶ֤ה אֶת־אֶחָיו֙ בַּצֹּ֔אן וְה֣וּא נַ֗עַר אֶת־בְּנֵ֥י בִלְהָ֛ה וְאֶת־בְּנֵ֥י זִלְפָּ֖ה נְשֵׁ֣י אָבִ֑יו וַיָּבֵ֥א יוֹסֵ֛ף אֶת־דִּבָּתָ֥ם רָעָ֖ה אֶל־אֲבִיהֶֽם:

37:3

Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, since he was the child of his old age. He made [Joseph] a long colorful coat. 
VeYisra'el ahav et-Yosef mikol-banav ki-ven-zekunim hu lo ve'asah lo ktonet pasim.

גוְיִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אָהַ֤ב אֶת־יוֹסֵף֙ מִכָּל־בָּנָ֔יו כִּֽי־בֶן־זְקֻנִ֥ים ה֖וּא ל֑וֹ וְעָ֥שָׂה ל֖וֹ כְּתֹ֥נֶת פַּסִּֽים:

37:4

When his brothers realized that their father loved him more than all the rest, they began to hate him. They could not say a peaceful word to him. 
Vayir'u echav ki-oto ahav avihem mi-kol echav vayisne'u oto velo yachlu dabro leshalom.

דוַיִּרְא֣וּ אֶחָ֗יו כִּֽי־אֹת֞וֹ אָהַ֤ב אֲבִיהֶם֙ מִכָּל־אֶחָ֔יו וַיִּשְׂנְא֖וּ אֹת֑וֹ וְלֹ֥א יָֽכְל֖וּ דַּבְּר֥וֹ לְשָׁלֹֽם:

37:5

Then Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. 
Vayachalom Yosef chalom vayaged le'echav vayosifu od sno oto.

הוַיַּֽחֲלֹ֤ם יוֹסֵף֙ חֲל֔וֹם וַיַּגֵּ֖ד לְאֶחָ֑יו וַיּוֹסִ֥פוּ ע֖וֹד שְׂנֹ֥א אֹתֽוֹ:

37:6

'Listen to the dream I had,' he said to them. 
Vayomer aleyhem shime'u-na hachalom hazeh asher chalamti.

ווַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם שִׁמְעוּ־נָ֕א הַֽחֲל֥וֹם הַזֶּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר חָלָֽמְתִּי:

37:7

'We were binding sheaves in the field, when my sheaf suddenly stood up erect. Your sheaves formed a circle around my sheaf, and bowed down to it.' 
Vehineh anachnu me'almim alumim betoch hasadeh vehineh kamah alumati vegam-nitsavah vehineh tesubeynah alumoteychem vatishtachaveynah la'alumati.

זוְהִנֵּ֠ה אֲנַ֜חְנוּ מְאַלְּמִ֤ים אֲלֻמִּים֙ בְּת֣וֹךְ הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה וְהִנֵּ֛ה קָ֥מָה אֲלֻמָּתִ֖י וְגַם־נִצָּ֑בָה וְהִנֵּ֤ה תְסֻבֶּ֨ינָה֙ אֲלֻמֹּ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם וַתִּשְׁתַּֽחֲוֶ֖יןָ לַֽאֲלֻמָּתִֽי:

37:8

'Do you want to be our king?' retorted the brothers. 'Do you intend to rule over us?' Because of his dreams and words, they hated him even more. 
Vayomru lo echav hamaloch timloch aleynu im-mashol timshol banu vayosifu od sno oto al-chalomotav ve'al-devarav.

חוַיֹּ֤אמְרוּ לוֹ֙ אֶחָ֔יו הֲמָלֹ֤ךְ תִּמְלֹךְ֙ עָלֵ֔ינוּ אִם־מָשׁ֥וֹל תִּמְשֹׁ֖ל בָּ֑נוּ וַיּוֹסִ֤פוּ עוֹד֙ שְׂנֹ֣א אֹת֔וֹ עַל־חֲלֹֽמֹתָ֖יו וְעַל־דְּבָרָֽיו:

37:9

He had another dream and told it to his brothers. 'I just had another dream,' he said. 'The sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me.' 
Vayachalom od chalom acher vayesaper oto le'echav vayomer hineh chalamti chalom od vehineh hashemesh vehayareach ve'achad asar kochavim mishtachavim li.

טוַיַּֽחֲלֹ֥ם עוֹד֙ חֲל֣וֹם אַחֵ֔ר וַיְסַפֵּ֥ר אֹת֖וֹ לְאֶחָ֑יו וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הִנֵּ֨ה חָלַ֤מְתִּי חֲלוֹם֙ ע֔וֹד וְהִנֵּ֧ה הַשֶּׁ֣מֶשׁ וְהַיָּרֵ֗חַ וְאַחַ֤ד עָשָׂר֙ כּֽוֹכָבִ֔ים מִשְׁתַּֽחֲוִ֖ים לִֽי:

37:10

When he told it to his father and brothers, his father scolded him and said, 'What kind of dream did you have? Do you want me, your mother, and your brothers to come and prostrate ourselves on the ground to you?' 
Vayesaper el-aviv ve'el-echav vayig'ar-bo aviv vayomer lo mah hachalom hazeh asher chalamta havo navo ani ve'imcha ve'acheycha lehishtachavot lecha artsah.

יוַיְסַפֵּ֣ר אֶל־אָבִיו֘ וְאֶל־אֶחָיו֒ וַיִּגְעַר־בּ֣וֹ אָבִ֔יו וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ מָ֛ה הַֽחֲל֥וֹם הַזֶּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָלָ֑מְתָּ הֲב֣וֹא נָב֗וֹא אֲנִי֙ וְאִמְּךָ֣ וְאַחֶ֔יךָ לְהִשְׁתַּֽחֲו֥‍ֹת לְךָ֖ אָֽרְצָה:

37:11

His brothers became very jealous of him, but his fathersuspended judgment. 
Vayekan'u-vo echav ve'aviv shamar et-hadavar.

יאוַיְקַנְאוּ־ב֖וֹ אֶחָ֑יו וְאָבִ֖יו שָׁמַ֥ר אֶת־הַדָּבָֽר:

37:12

Second Reading
[Joseph's] brothers left to tend their father's sheep inShechem. 
Vayelchu echav lir'ot et-tson avihem biShchem.

יבוַיֵּֽלְכ֖וּ אֶחָ֑יו לִרְע֛וֹת אֶת־צֹ֥אן אֲבִיהֶ֖ם בִּשְׁכֶֽם:

37:13

Israel said to Joseph, 'I believe your brothers are keeping the sheep in Shechem. I would like you to go to them.'

'I'm ready,' replied [Joseph]. 
Vayomer Yisra'el el-Yosef halo acheycha ro'im biShchem lechah ve'eshlachacha aleyhem vayomer lo hineni.

יגוַיֹּ֨אמֶר יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אֶל־יוֹסֵ֗ף הֲל֤וֹא אַחֶ֨יךָ֙ רֹעִ֣ים בִּשְׁכֶ֔ם לְכָ֖ה וְאֶשְׁלָֽחֲךָ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ל֖וֹ הִנֵּֽנִי:

37:14

'Then see how your brothers and the sheep are doing,' said [Israel]. 'Bring me a report.'

[Israel] thus sent him from the Hebron valley, and [Joseph] arrived in Shechem. 
Vayomer lo lech-na re'eh et-shlom acheycha ve'et-shlom hatson vahashiveyni davar vayishlachehu me'Emek Chevron vayavo Shchemah.

ידוַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֗וֹ לֶךְ־נָ֨א רְאֵ֜ה אֶת־שְׁל֤וֹם אַחֶ֨יךָ֙ וְאֶת־שְׁל֣וֹם הַצֹּ֔אן וַֽהֲשִׁבֵ֖נִי דָּבָ֑ר וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֨הוּ֙ מֵעֵ֣מֶק חֶבְר֔וֹן וַיָּבֹ֖א שְׁכֶֽמָה:

37:15

A stranger found him blundering about in the fields. 'What are you looking for?' asked the stranger. 
Vayimtsa'ehu ish vehineh to'eh basadeh vayish'alehu ha'ish lemor mah-tevakesh.

טווַיִּמְצָאֵ֣הוּ אִ֔ישׁ וְהִנֵּ֥ה תֹעֶ֖ה בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה וַיִּשְׁאָלֵ֧הוּ הָאִ֛ישׁ לֵאמֹ֖ר מַה־תְּבַקֵּֽשׁ:

37:16

'I'm looking for my brothers,' replied [Joseph]. 'Perhaps you can tell me where they are tending the sheep.' 
Vayomer et-achay anochi mevakesh hagidah-na li eyfoh hem ro'im.

טזוַיֹּ֕אמֶר אֶת־אַחַ֖י אָֽנֹכִ֣י מְבַקֵּ֑שׁ הַגִּֽידָה־נָּ֣א לִ֔י אֵיפֹ֖ה הֵ֥ם רֹעִֽים:

37:17

'They already left this area,' said the man. 'I heard them planning to go to Dothan.'

Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan. 
Vayomer ha'ish nas'u mizeh ki shamati omrim nelchah Dotaynah vayelech Yosef achar echav vayimtsa'em beDotan.

יזוַיֹּ֤אמֶר הָאִישׁ֙ נָֽסְע֣וּ מִזֶּ֔ה כִּ֤י שָׁמַ֨עְתִּי֙ אֹֽמְרִ֔ים נֵֽלְכָ֖ה דֹּתָ֑יְנָה וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ יוֹסֵף֙ אַחַ֣ר אֶחָ֔יו וַיִּמְצָאֵ֖ם בְּדֹתָֽן:

37:18

They saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they were plotting to kill him. 
Vayir'u oto merachok uveterem yikrav aleyhem vayitnaklu oto lahamito.

יחוַיִּרְא֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ מֵֽרָחֹ֑ק וּבְטֶ֨רֶם֙ יִקְרַ֣ב אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם וַיִּתְנַכְּל֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ לַֽהֲמִיתֽוֹ:

37:19

'Here comes the dreamer!' they said to one another. 
Vayomru ish el-achiv hineh ba'al-hachalomot halazeh ba.

יטוַיֹּֽאמְר֖וּ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־אָחִ֑יו הִנֵּ֗ה בַּ֛עַל הַֽחֲלֹמ֥וֹת הַלָּזֶ֖ה בָּֽא:

37:20

'Now we have the chance! Let's kill him and throw him into one of the wells. We can say that a wild beast ate him. Then let's see what will become of his dreams!' 
Ve'atah lechu venahargehu venashlichehu be'achad haborot ve'amarnu chayah ra'ah achalathu venir'eh mah-yihyu chalomotav.

כוְעַתָּ֣ה | לְכ֣וּ וְנַֽהַרְגֵ֗הוּ וְנַשְׁלִכֵ֨הוּ֙ בְּאַחַ֣ד הַבֹּר֔וֹת וְאָמַ֕רְנוּ חַיָּ֥ה רָעָ֖ה אֲכָלָ֑תְהוּ וְנִרְאֶ֕ה מַה־יִּֽהְי֖וּ חֲלֹֽמֹתָֽיו:

37:21

Reuben heard these words and tried to rescue [Joseph]. 'Let's not kill him!' he said. 
Vayishma Re'uven vayatsilehu miyadam vayomer lo nakenu nafesh.

כאוַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע רְאוּבֵ֔ן וַיַּצִּלֵ֖הוּ מִיָּדָ֑ם וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לֹ֥א נַכֶּ֖נּוּ נָֽפֶשׁ:

37:22

Reuben tried to reason with his brothers. 'Don't commit bloodshed. You can throw him into this well in the desert, and you won't have to lay a hand on him.' His plan was to rescue [Joseph] from [his brothers] and bring him back to his father. 
Vayomer alehem Re'uven al-tishpechu-dam hashlichu oto el-habor hazeh asher bamidbar veyad al-tishlechu-vo lema'an hatsil oto miyadam lahashivo el-aviv.

כבוַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֣ם | רְאוּבֵן֘ אַל־תִּשְׁפְּכוּ־דָם֒ הַשְׁלִ֣יכוּ אֹת֗וֹ אֶל־הַבּ֤וֹר הַזֶּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר וְיָ֖ד אַל־תִּשְׁלְחוּ־ב֑וֹ לְמַ֗עַן הַצִּ֤יל אֹתוֹ֙ מִיָּדָ֔ם לַֽהֲשִׁיב֖וֹ אֶל־אָבִֽיו:

37:23

Third Reading
When Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of the long colorful coat that he was wearing. 
Vayehi ka'asher ba Yosef el-echav vayafshitu et-Yosef et-kutanto et-ktonet hapasim asher alav.

כגוַיְהִ֕י כַּֽאֲשֶׁר־בָּ֥א יוֹסֵ֖ף אֶל־אֶחָ֑יו וַיַּפְשִׁ֤יטוּ אֶת־יוֹסֵף֙ אֶת־כֻּתָּנְתּ֔וֹ אֶת־כְּתֹ֥נֶת הַפַּסִּ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָלָֽיו:

37:24

They took him and threw him into the well. The well was empty; there was no water in it. 
Vayikachuhu vayashlichu oto haborah vehabor reyk eyn bo mayim.

כדוַיִּ֨קָּחֻ֔הוּ וַיַּשְׁלִ֥כוּ אֹת֖וֹ הַבֹּ֑רָה וְהַבּ֣וֹר רֵ֔ק אֵ֥ין בּ֖וֹ מָֽיִם:

37:25

The [brothers] sat down and ate a meal. When they looked up, they saw an Arab caravan coming from Gilead. The camels were carrying gum, balsam, and resin, transporting them to Egypt. 
Vayeshvu le'echol-lechem vayis'u eyneyhem vayir'u vehineh orchat Yishme'elim ba'ah miGil'ad ugemaleyhem nos'im nechot utsri valot holchim lehorid Mitsraymah.

כהוַיֵּֽשְׁבוּ֘ לֶֽאֱכָל־לֶחֶם֒ וַיִּשְׂא֤וּ עֵֽינֵיהֶם֙ וַיִּרְא֔וּ וְהִנֵּה֙ אֹֽרְחַ֣ת יִשְׁמְעֵאלִ֔ים בָּאָ֖ה מִגִּלְעָ֑ד וּגְמַלֵּיהֶ֣ם נֹֽשְׂאִ֗ים נְכֹאת֙ וּצְרִ֣י וָלֹ֔ט הֽוֹלְכִ֖ים לְהוֹרִ֥יד מִצְרָֽיְמָה:

37:26

Judah said to his brothers, 'What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover his blood? 
Vayomer Yehudah el-echav mah-betsa ki naharog et-achinu vechisinu et-damo.

כווַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוּדָ֖ה אֶל־אֶחָ֑יו מַה־בֶּ֗צַע כִּ֤י נַֽהֲרֹג֙ אֶת־אָחִ֔ינוּ וְכִסִּ֖ינוּ אֶת־דָּמֽוֹ:

37:27

Let's sell him to the Arabs and not harm him with our own hands. After all, he's our brother, our own flesh and blood.' His brothers agreed. 
Lechu venimkerenu la-Yishme'elim veyadenu al-tehi-vo ki-achinu vesarenu hu vayishme'u echav.

כזלְכ֞וּ וְנִמְכְּרֶ֣נּוּ לַיִּשְׁמְעֵאלִ֗ים וְיָדֵ֨נוּ֙ אַל־תְּהִי־ב֔וֹ כִּֽי־אָחִ֥ינוּ בְשָׂרֵ֖נוּ ה֑וּא וַיִּשְׁמְע֖וּ אֶחָֽיו:

37:28

The strangers, who turned out to be Midianite tradersapproached, and [the brothers] pulled Joseph out of the well. They sold him to the Arabs for twenty pieces of silver. [These Midianite Arabs] were to bring Joseph to Egypt. 
Vaya'avru anashim Midyanim socharim vayimshechu vaya'alu et-Yosef min-habor vayimkeru et-Yosef la-Yishme'elim be'esrim kasef vayavi'u et-Yosef Mitsraymah.

כחוַיַּֽעַבְרוּ֩ אֲנָשִׁ֨ים מִדְיָנִ֜ים סֹֽחֲרִ֗ים וַיִּמְשְׁכוּ֙ וַיַּֽעֲל֤וּ אֶת־יוֹסֵף֙ מִן־הַבּ֔וֹר וַיִּמְכְּר֧וּ אֶת־יוֹסֵ֛ף לַיִּשְׁמְעֵאלִ֖ים בְּעֶשְׂרִ֣ים כָּ֑סֶף וַיָּבִ֥יאוּ אֶת־יוֹסֵ֖ף מִצְרָֽיְמָה:

37:29

When Reuben returned to the well, Joseph was no longer there. [Reuben] tore his clothes in grief. 
Vayashav Re'uven el-habor vehineh eyn-Yosef babor vayikra et-begadav.

כטוַיָּ֤שָׁב רְאוּבֵן֙ אֶל־הַבּ֔וֹר וְהִנֵּ֥ה אֵֽין־יוֹסֵ֖ף בַּבּ֑וֹר וַיִּקְרַ֖ע אֶת־בְּגָדָֽיו:

37:30

He returned to his brothers. 'The boy is gone!' he exclaimed. 'And I - where can I go?' 
Vayashav el-echav vayomar hayeled eynenu va'ani anah ani-vah.

לוַיָּ֥שָׁב אֶל־אֶחָ֖יו וַיֹּאמַ֑ר הַיֶּ֣לֶד אֵינֶ֔נּוּ וַֽאֲנִ֖י אָ֥נָה אֲנִי־בָֽא:

37:31

[The brothers] took Joseph's coat. They slaughtered a goat and dipped the coat in the blood. 
Vayikchu et-kutonet Yosef vayishchatu se'ir izim vayitbelu et-haketonet badam.

לאוַיִּקְח֖וּ אֶת־כְּתֹ֣נֶת יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיִּשְׁחֲטוּ֙ שְׂעִ֣יר עִזִּ֔ים וַיִּטְבְּל֥וּ אֶת־הַכֻּתֹּ֖נֶת בַּדָּֽם:

37:32

They sent the long colorful coat, and it was brought to their father. 'We found this,' explained [the brothers when they returned]. 'Try to identify it. Is it your son's coat or not?' 
Vayeshalchu et-ktonet hapasim vayavi'u el-avihem vayomru zot matsanu haker-na haktonet bincha hi im-lo.

לבוַיְשַׁלְּח֞וּ אֶת־כְּתֹ֣נֶת הַפַּסִּ֗ים וַיָּבִ֨יאוּ֙ אֶל־אֲבִיהֶ֔ם וַיֹּֽאמְר֖וּ זֹ֣את מָצָ֑אנוּ הַכֶּר־נָ֗א הַכְּתֹ֧נֶת בִּנְךָ֛ הִ֖וא אִם־לֹֽא:

37:33

[Jacob immediately] recognized it. 'It is my son's coat!' he cried. 'A wild beast must have eaten him! My Joseph has been torn to pieces!' 
Vayakirah vayomer ktonet bni chayah ra'ah achalathu tarof toraf Yosef.

לגוַיַּכִּירָ֤הּ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ כְּתֹ֣נֶת בְּנִ֔י חַיָּ֥ה רָעָ֖ה אֲכָלָ֑תְהוּ טָרֹ֥ף טֹרַ֖ף יוֹסֵֽף:

37:34

He tore his robes in grief and put on sackcloth. He kept himself in mourning for many days. 
Vayikra Ya'akov simlotav vayasem sak bemotnav vayit'abel al-beno yamim rabim.

לדוַיִּקְרַ֤ע יַֽעֲקֹב֙ שִׂמְלֹתָ֔יו וַיָּ֥שֶׂם שַׂ֖ק בְּמָתְנָ֑יו וַיִּתְאַבֵּ֥ל עַל־בְּנ֖וֹ יָמִ֥ים רַבִּֽים:

37:35

All his sons and daughters tried to console him, but he refused to be comforted. 'I will go down to the grave mourning for my son,' he said. He wept for [his son] as only a father could. 
Vayakumu chol-banav vechol-bnotav lenachamo vayema'en lehitnachem vayomer ki-ered el-beni avel she'olah vayevk oto aviv.

להוַיָּקֻ֩מוּ֩ כָל־בָּנָ֨יו וְכָל־בְּנֹתָ֜יו לְנַֽחֲמ֗וֹ וַיְמָאֵן֙ לְהִתְנַחֵ֔ם וַיֹּ֕אמֶר כִּֽי־אֵרֵ֧ד אֶל־בְּנִ֛י אָבֵ֖ל שְׁאֹ֑לָה וַיֵּ֥בְךְּ אֹת֖וֹ אָבִֽיו:

37:36

The Midanites sold [Joseph] in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officers, captain of the guard. 
Vehamedanim machru oto el-Mitsrayim le-Fotifar sris Par'oh sar hatabachim.

לווְהַ֨מְּדָנִ֔ים מָֽכְר֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ אֶל־מִצְרָ֑יִם לְפֽוֹטִיפַר֙ סְרִ֣יס פַּרְעֹ֔ה שַׂ֖ר הַטַּבָּחִֽים:
