Genesis - Chapter 43

43:1

The famine became worse in the area. 
Vehara'av kaved ba'arets.

אוְהָֽרָעָ֖ב כָּבֵ֥ד בָּאָֽרֶץ:

43:2

When they had used up all the supplies that they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, 'Go back and get us a little food.' 
Veyehi ka'asher kilu le'echol et-hashever asher hevi'u mi-Mitsrayim vayomer aleyhem avihem shuvu shivru-lanu me'at-ochel.

בוַיְהִ֗י כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֤ר כִּלּוּ֙ לֶֽאֱכֹ֣ל אֶת־הַשֶּׁ֔בֶר אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֵבִ֖יאוּ מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם֙ אֲבִיהֶ֔ם שֻׁ֖בוּ שִׁבְרוּ־לָ֥נוּ מְעַט־אֹֽכֶל:

43:3

Judah tried to reason with him. He said, 'The man warned us, 'Do not appear before me unless your brother is with you.' 
Vayomer elav Yehudah lemor ha'ed he'id banu ha'ish lemor lo-tir'u fanay bilti achichem itchem.

גוַיֹּ֧אמֶר אֵלָ֛יו יְהוּדָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר הָעֵ֣ד הֵעִד֩ בָּ֨נוּ הָאִ֤ישׁ לֵאמֹר֙ לֹֽא־תִרְא֣וּ פָנַ֔י בִּלְתִּ֖י אֲחִיכֶ֥ם אִתְּכֶֽם:

43:4

If you consent to send our brother with us, we will go and get you food. 
Im-yeshcha meshale'ach et-achinu itanu nerdah venishberah lecha ochel.

דאִם־יֶשְׁךָ֛ מְשַׁלֵּ֥חַ אֶת־אָחִ֖ינוּ אִתָּ֑נוּ נֵֽרְדָ֕ה וְנִשְׁבְּרָ֥ה לְךָ֖ אֹֽכֶל:

43:5

But if you will not send [him], we cannot go. The man told us, 'Do not appear before me unless your brother is with you.' ' 
Ve'im eyncha meshale'ach lo nered ki-ha'ish amar eleynu lo-tir'u fanay bilti achichem itchem.

הוְאִם־אֵֽינְךָ֥ מְשַׁלֵּ֖חַ לֹ֣א נֵרֵ֑ד כִּֽי־הָאִ֞ישׁ אָמַ֤ר אֵלֵ֨ינוּ֙ לֹֽא־תִרְא֣וּ פָנַ֔י בִּלְתִּ֖י אֲחִיכֶ֥ם אִתְּכֶֽם:

43:6

Israel said, 'Why did you do such a terrible thing to me, telling the man that you had another brother?' 
Vayomer Yisra'el lamah hare'otem li lehagid la'ish ha'od lachem ach.

ווַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לָמָ֥ה הֲרֵֽעֹתֶ֖ם לִ֑י לְהַגִּ֣יד לָאִ֔ישׁ הַע֥וֹד לָכֶ֖ם אָֽח:

43:7

[The brothers] replied, 'The man kept asking about us and our family. He asked, 'Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?' We simply answered his questions. How were we to know that he would demand that we bring our brother there?' 
Vayomeru sha'ol sha'al-ha'ish lanu ulemoladetenu lemor ha'od avichem chay hayesh lachem ach vanaged-lo al-pi hadevarim ha'eleh hayodoa neda ki yomar horidu et-achichem.

זוַיֹּֽאמְר֡וּ שָׁא֣וֹל שָֽׁאַל־הָ֠אִ֠ישׁ לָ֣נוּ וּלְמֽוֹלַדְתֵּ֜נוּ לֵאמֹ֗ר הַע֨וֹד אֲבִיכֶ֥ם חַי֙ הֲיֵ֣שׁ לָכֶ֣ם אָ֔ח וַנַּ֨גֶּד־ל֔וֹ עַל־פִּ֖י הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה הֲיָד֣וֹעַ נֵדַ֔ע כִּ֣י יֹאמַ֔ר הוֹרִ֖ידוּ אֶת־אֲחִיכֶֽם:

43:8

'Send the boy with me,' said Judah to his father Israel. 'Let us set out and get going. Let's live and not die - we, you, and also our children. 
Vayomer Yehudah el-Yisra'el aviv shilchah hana'ar iti venakumah venelechah venichyeh velo namut gam-anachnu gam-atah gam-tapenu.

חוַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוּדָ֜ה אֶל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל אָבִ֗יו שִׁלְחָ֥ה הַנַּ֛עַר אִתִּ֖י וְנָק֣וּמָה וְנֵלֵ֑כָה וְנִֽחְיֶה֙ וְלֹ֣א נָמ֔וּת גַּם־אֲנַ֥חְנוּ גַם־אַתָּ֖ה גַּם־טַפֵּֽנוּ:

43:9

I myself will be responsible for him. You can demand him from my own hand. If I do not bring him back and have him stand before you, I will have sinned for all time. 
Anochi e'ervenu miyadi tevakshenu im-lo havi'otiv eleycha vehitsagtiv lefaneycha vechatati lecha kol-hayamim.

טאָֽנֹכִי֙ אֶֽעֶרְבֶ֔נּוּ מִיָּדִ֖י תְּבַקְשֶׁ֑נּוּ אִם־לֹ֨א הֲבִֽיאֹתִ֤יו אֵלֶ֨יךָ֙ וְהִצַּגְתִּ֣יו לְפָנֶ֔יךָ וְחָטָ֥אתִי לְךָ֖ כָּל־הַיָּמִֽים:

43:10

But if we had not waited so long, we could have been there and back twice by now!' 
Ki lule hitmahmahnu ki-atah shavnu zeh fa'amayim.

יכִּ֖י לוּלֵ֣א הִתְמַהְמָ֑הְנוּ כִּֽי־עַתָּ֥ה שַׁ֖בְנוּ זֶ֥ה פַֽעֲמָֽיִם:

43:11

Their father Israel said to them, 'If that's the way it must be, this is what you must do. Take some of the land's famous products in your baggage, a little balsam, a little honey, and some gum, resin, pistachio nuts and almonds. 
Vayomer alehem Yisra'el avihem im-ken efo zot asu kechu mizimrat ha'arets bichleychem vehoridu la'ish minchah me'at tsari ume'at dvash nechot valot botnim ushkedim.

יאוַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֜ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל אֲבִיהֶ֗ם אִם־כֵּ֣ן | אֵפוֹא֘ זֹ֣את עֲשׂוּ֒ קְח֞וּ מִזִּמְרַ֤ת הָאָ֨רֶץ֙ בִּכְלֵיכֶ֔ם וְהוֹרִ֥ידוּ לָאִ֖ישׁ מִנְחָ֑ה מְעַ֤ט צֳרִי֙ וּמְעַ֣ט דְּבַ֔שׁ נְכֹ֣את וָלֹ֔ט בָּטְנִ֖ים וּשְׁקֵדִֽים:

43:12

Take along twice as much money, so that you will be able to return the money that was put at the tops of your packs - it might have been an oversight. 
Vechesef mishneh kchu veyedchem ve'et-hakesef hamoshav befi amtechoteychem tashivu veyedchem ulay mishgeh hu.

יבוְכֶ֥סֶף מִשְׁנֶ֖ה קְח֣וּ בְיֶדְכֶ֑ם וְאֶת־הַכֶּ֜סֶף הַמּוּשַׁ֨ב בְּפִ֤י אַמְתְּחֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ תָּשִׁ֣יבוּ בְיֶדְכֶ֔ם אוּלַ֥י מִשְׁגֶּ֖ה הֽוּא:

43:13

And your brother - take him. Go and return to the man. 
Ve'et-achichem kachu vekumu shuvu el-ha'ish.

יגוְאֶת־אֲחִיכֶ֖ם קָ֑חוּ וְק֖וּמוּ שׁ֥וּבוּ אֶל־הָאִֽישׁ:

43:14

May God Almighty grant that the man have pity on you and let you go along with your other brother and Benjamin. If I must lose my children, then I will lose them.' 
Ve'El Shaday yiten lachem rachamim lifney ha'ish veshilach lachem et-achichem acher ve'et-Binyamin va'ani ka'asher shacholti shachalti.

ידוְאֵ֣ל שַׁדַּ֗י יִתֵּ֨ן לָכֶ֤ם רַֽחֲמִים֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הָאִ֔ישׁ וְשִׁלַּ֥ח לָכֶ֛ם אֶת־אֲחִיכֶ֥ם אַחֵ֖ר וְאֶת־בִּנְיָמִ֑ין וַֽאֲנִ֕י כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁכֹ֖לְתִּי שָׁכָֽלְתִּי:

43:15

The brothers took the gift and also brought along twice as much money [as was needed]. They set out with Benjamin and went to Egypt. [Once again] they stood before Joseph. 
Vayikchu ha'anashim et-haminchah hazot umishneh-kesef lakchu veyadam ve'et-Binyamin vayakumu vayerdu Mitsrayim vaya'amdu lifney Yosef.

טווַיִּקְח֤וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ אֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את וּמִשְׁנֶה־כֶּ֛סֶף לָֽקְח֥וּ בְיָדָ֖ם וְאֶת־בִּנְיָמִ֑ן וַיָּקֻ֨מוּ֙ וַיֵּֽרְד֣וּ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַיַּֽעַמְד֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י יוֹסֵֽף:

43:16

Sixth Reading
When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the overseer of his household, 'Bring these men to the palace. Butcher an animal and prepare it. These men will be eating lunch with me.'
Vayar Yosef itam et-Binyamin vayomer la'asher al-beyto have et-ha'anashim habaytah utvoach tevach vehachen ki iti yochlu ha'anashim batsohorayim.

טזוַיַּ֨רְא יוֹסֵ֣ף אִתָּם֘ אֶת־בִּנְיָמִין֒ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לַֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־בֵּית֔וֹ הָבֵ֥א אֶת־הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים הַבָּ֑יְתָה וּטְבֹ֤חַ טֶ֨בַח֙ וְהָכֵ֔ן כִּ֥י אִתִּ֛י יֹֽאכְל֥וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים בַּצָּֽהֳרָֽיִם:

43:17

The man did as Joseph said, and he escorted the brothers to Joseph's palace. 
Vaya'as ha'ish ka'asher amar Yosef vayave ha'ish et-ha'anashim beytah Yosef.

יזוַיַּ֣עַשׂ הָאִ֔ישׁ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר אָמַ֣ר יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיָּבֵ֥א הָאִ֛ישׁ אֶת־הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים בֵּ֥יתָה יוֹסֵֽף:

43:18

When the men [realized that] they were being brought to Joseph's palace, they were terrified. They said, 'We are being brought here because of the money that was put back in our packs the last time. We will be framed and convicted. Ourdonkeys can be confiscated, and we can even be taken as slaves.' 
Vayir'u ha'anashim ki huve'u beyt Yosef vayomeru al-devar hakesef hashav be'amtechoteynu batchilah anachnu muva'im lehitgolel aleynu ulehitnapel aleynu velakachat otanu la'avadim ve'et-chamoreynu.

יחוַיִּֽירְא֣וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֗ים כִּ֣י הֽוּבְאוּ֘ בֵּ֣ית יוֹסֵף֒ וַיֹּֽאמְר֗וּ עַל־דְּבַ֤ר הַכֶּ֨סֶף֙ הַשָּׁ֤ב בְּאַמְתְּחֹתֵ֨ינוּ֙ בַּתְּחִלָּ֔ה אֲנַ֖חְנוּ מֽוּבָאִ֑ים לְהִתְגֹּלֵ֤ל עָלֵ֨ינוּ֙ וּלְהִתְנַפֵּ֣ל עָלֵ֔ינוּ וְלָקַ֧חַת אֹתָ֛נוּ לַֽעֲבָדִ֖ים וְאֶת־חֲמֹרֵֽינוּ:

43:19

When they were at the door of Joseph's palace, they went over to the overseer and spoke to him. 
Vayigshu el-ha'ish asher al-beyt Yosef vayedabru elav petach habayit.

יטוַיִּגְּשׁוּ֙ אֶל־הָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־בֵּ֣ית יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיְדַבְּר֥וּ אֵלָ֖יו פֶּ֥תַח הַבָּֽיִת:

43:20

'If you please, sir,' they said, 'we originally came down to buy food. 
Vayomru bi adoni yarod yaradnu batchilah lishbor-ochel.

כוַיֹּֽאמְר֖וּ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִ֑י יָרֹ֥ד יָרַ֛דְנוּ בַּתְּחִלָּ֖ה לִשְׁבָּר־אֹֽכֶל:

43:21

Then, when we came to the place where we spent the night, we opened our packs, and each man's money was at the top of the pack. It was our own money, in its exact weight. We have brought it back with us. 
Vayehi ki-vanu el-hamalon vaniftechah et-amtechoteynu vehineh chesef-ish befi amtachto kaspenu bemishkalo vanashev oto beyadenu.

כאוַיְהִ֞י כִּי־בָ֣אנוּ אֶל־הַמָּל֗וֹן וַנִּפְתְּחָה֙ אֶת־אַמְתְּחֹתֵ֔ינוּ וְהִנֵּ֤ה כֶֽסֶף־אִישׁ֙ בְּפִ֣י אַמְתַּחְתּ֔וֹ כַּסְפֵּ֖נוּ בְּמִשְׁקָל֑וֹ וַנָּ֥שֶׁב אֹת֖וֹ בְּיָדֵֽנוּ:

43:22

We have also brought along other money to buy food. We have no idea who put the money back in our packs!' 
Vechesef acher horadnu veyadenu lishbor-ochel lo yadanu mi-sam kaspenu be'amtechoteynu.

כבוְכֶ֧סֶף אַחֵ֛ר הוֹרַ֥דְנוּ בְיָדֵ֖נוּ לִשְׁבָּר־אֹ֑כֶל לֹ֣א יָדַ֔עְנוּ מִי־שָׂ֥ם כַּסְפֵּ֖נוּ בְּאַמְתְּחֹתֵֽינוּ:

43:23

'Everything is fine as far as you are concerned,' replied [the overseer]. 'Don't be afraid. The God you and your father worship must have placed a hidden gift in your packs. I received the money you paid.' With that, he brought Simeon out to them. 
Vayomer shalom lachem al-tira'u Eloheychem v'Elohey avichem natan lachem matmon be'amtechoteychem kaspechem ba elay vayotse alehem et-Shim'on.

כגוַיֹּ֩אמֶר֩ שָׁל֨וֹם לָכֶ֜ם אַל־תִּירָ֗אוּ אֱלֹ֨הֵיכֶ֜ם וֵֽאלֹהֵ֤י אֲבִיכֶם֙ נָתַ֨ן לָכֶ֤ם מַטְמוֹן֙ בְּאַמְתְּחֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם כַּסְפְּכֶ֖ם בָּ֣א אֵלָ֑י וַיּוֹצֵ֥א אֲלֵהֶ֖ם אֶת־שִׁמְעֽוֹן:

43:24

The man brought the brothers into Joseph's palace. He gave them water so they could wash their feet, and had fodder given to their donkeys. 
Vayave ha'ish et-ha'anashim beytah Yosef vayiten-mayim vayirchatsu ragleyhem vayiten mispo lachamoreyhem.

כדוַיָּבֵ֥א הָאִ֛ישׁ אֶת־הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים בֵּ֣יתָה יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיִּתֶּן־מַ֨יִם֙ וַיִּרְחֲצ֣וּ רַגְלֵיהֶ֔ם וַיִּתֵּ֥ן מִסְפּ֖וֹא לַֽחֲמֹֽרֵיהֶֽם:

43:25

They got their gifts ready for when Joseph would come at noon, since they heard that they would be eating with him. 
Vayachinu et-haminchah ad-bo Yosef batsohorayim ki sham'u ki-sham yochlu lachem.

כהוַיָּכִ֨ינוּ֙ אֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֔ה עַד־בּ֥וֹא יוֹסֵ֖ף בַּצָּֽהֳרָ֑יִם כִּ֣י שָֽׁמְע֔וּ כִּי־שָׁ֖ם יֹ֥אכְלוּ לָֽחֶם:

43:26

When Joseph arrived home, they presented him with the gifts they had brought. They prostrated themselves on the ground to him. 
Vayavo Yosef habaytah vayavi'u lo et-haminchah asher-beyadam habaytah vayishtachavu-lo artsah.

כווַיָּבֹ֤א יוֹסֵף֙ הַבַּ֔יְתָה וַיָּבִ֥יאוּ ל֛וֹ אֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־בְּיָדָ֖ם הַבָּ֑יְתָה וַיִּשְׁתַּֽחֲווּ־ל֖וֹ אָֽרְצָה:

43:27

He inquired as to their welfare. 'Is your old father at peace?' he asked. 'Remember, you told me about him. Is he still alive?' 
Vayish'al lahem leshalom vayomer hashalom avichem hazaken asher amartem ha'odenu chay.

כזוַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל לָהֶם֙ לְשָׁל֔וֹם וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הֲשָׁל֛וֹם אֲבִיכֶ֥ם הַזָּקֵ֖ן אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֲמַרְתֶּ֑ם הַֽעוֹדֶ֖נּוּ חָֽי:

43:28

'Your servant our father is at peace,' they replied, 'He is still alive.' They bowed their heads and prostrated themselves. 
Vayomeru shalom le'avdecha le'avinu odenu chay vayikdu vayishtachavu.

כחוַיֹּֽאמְר֗וּ שָׁל֛וֹם לְעַבְדְּךָ֥ לְאָבִ֖ינוּ עוֹדֶ֣נּוּ חָ֑י וַיִּקְּד֖וּ וַיִּשְׁתַּֽחֲוֽוּ כתיב וישתחו:

43:29

[Joseph] looked up and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son. He said, 'This must be your youngest brother, about whom you told me.' [To Benjamin] he said, 'God be gracious to you, my son.' 
Vayisa eynav vayar et-Binyamin achiv ben-imo vayomer hazeh achichem hakaton asher amartem elay vayomar Elohim yochnecha beni.

כטוַיִּשָּׂ֣א עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּ֞רְא אֶת־בִּנְיָמִ֣ין אָחִיו֘ בֶּן־אִמּוֹ֒ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הֲזֶה֙ אֲחִיכֶ֣ם הַקָּטֹ֔ן אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם אֵלָ֑י וַיֹּאמַ֕ר אֱלֹהִ֥ים יָחְנְךָ֖ בְּנִֽי:

 

43:30

Seventh Reading
Joseph rushed out. His emotions had been aroused by his brother, and he had to weep. He went to a room and there he wept. 
Vayemaher Yosef ki-nichmeru rachamav el-achiv vayevakesh livkot vayavo hachadrah vayevk shamah.

לוַיְמַהֵ֣ר יוֹסֵ֗ף כִּֽי־נִכְמְר֤וּ רַֽחֲמָיו֙ אֶל־אָחִ֔יו וַיְבַקֵּ֖שׁ לִבְכּ֑וֹת וַיָּבֹ֥א הַחַ֖דְרָה וַיֵּ֥בְךְּ שָֽׁמָּה:

43:31

He washed his face and came out. Holding in his emotions, he said, 'Serve the meal.' 
Vayirchats panav vayetse vayit'apak vayomer simu lachem.

לאוַיִּרְחַ֥ץ פָּנָ֖יו וַיֵּצֵ֑א וַיִּ֨תְאַפַּ֔ק וַיֹּ֖אמֶר שִׂ֥ימוּ לָֽחֶם:

43:32

[Joseph] was served by himself, and [the brothers] by themselves. The Egyptians who were eating with them [were also] segregated. The Egyptians could not eat with the Hebrews, since this was taboo to the Egyptians. 
Vayasimu lo levado velahem levadam vela-Mitsrim ha'ochlim ito levadam ki lo yuchlun haMitsrim le'echol et-ha'Ivrim lechem ki-to'evah hi le-Mitsrayim.

לבוַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ ל֛וֹ לְבַדּ֖וֹ וְלָהֶ֣ם לְבַדָּ֑ם וְלַמִּצְרִ֞ים הָאֹֽכְלִ֤ים אִתּוֹ֙ לְבַדָּ֔ם כִּי֩ לֹ֨א יֽוּכְל֜וּן הַמִּצְרִ֗ים לֶֽאֱכֹ֤ל אֶת־הָֽעִבְרִים֙ לֶ֔חֶם כִּי־תֽוֹעֵבָ֥ה הִ֖וא לְמִצְרָֽיִם:

43:33

When [the brothers] were seated before [Joseph], they were placed in order of age, from the oldest to the youngest. The brothers looked at each other in amazement. 
Vayeshvu lefanav habechor kivechorato vehatsa'ir kitse'irato vayitmehu ha'anashim ish el-re'ehu.

לגוַיֵּֽשְׁב֣וּ לְפָנָ֔יו הַבְּכֹר֙ כִּבְכֹ֣רָת֔וֹ וְהַצָּעִ֖יר כִּצְעִֽרָת֑וֹ וַיִּתְמְה֥וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֖ים אִ֥ישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵֽהוּ:

43:34

[Joseph] sent them portions from his table, giving Benjamin five times as much as the rest. They drank with him and became intoxicated. 
Vayisa mas'ot me'et panav alehem vaterev mas'at Binyamin mimas'ot kulam chamesh yadot vayishtu vayishkeru imo.

לדוַיִּשָּׂ֨א מַשְׂאֹ֜ת מֵאֵ֣ת פָּנָיו֘ אֲלֵהֶם֒ וַתֵּ֜רֶב מַשְׂאַ֧ת בִּנְיָמִ֛ן מִמַּשְׂאֹ֥ת כֻּלָּ֖ם חָמֵ֣שׁ יָד֑וֹת וַיִּשְׁתּ֥וּ וַיִּשְׁכְּר֖וּ עִמּֽוֹ:
