Genesis - Chapter 44

44:1

Joseph gave his overseer special instructions. 'Fill the men's packs with as much food as they can carry,' he said. 'Place each man's money at the top of his pack. 
Vayetsav et-asher al-beyto lemor male et-amtechot ha'anashim ochel ka'asher yuchlun set vesim kesef-ish befi amtachto.

אוַיְצַ֞ו אֶת־אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־בֵּיתוֹ֘ לֵאמֹר֒ מַלֵּ֞א אֶת־אַמְתְּחֹ֤ת הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ אֹ֔כֶל כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר יֽוּכְל֖וּן שְׂאֵ֑ת וְשִׂ֥ים כֶּֽסֶף־אִ֖ישׁ בְּפִ֥י אַמְתַּחְתּֽוֹ:

44:2

And my chalice - the silver chalice - place it on top of the youngest one's pack - along with the money for his food.' [The overseer] did exactly as Joseph instructed him. 
Ve'et-gevi'i gevia hakesef tasim befi amtachat hakaton ve'et kesef shivro vaya'as kidvar Yosef asher diber.

בוְאֶת־גְּבִיעִ֞י גְּבִ֣יעַ הַכֶּ֗סֶף תָּשִׂים֙ בְּפִי֙ אַמְתַּ֣חַת הַקָּטֹ֔ן וְאֵ֖ת כֶּ֣סֶף שִׁבְר֑וֹ וַיַּ֕עַשׂ כִּדְבַ֥ר יוֹסֵ֖ף אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֵּֽר:

44:3

With the first morning light, the brothers took their donkeys and were sent on their way. 
Haboker or veha'anashim shulchu hemah vachamoreyhem.

גהַבֹּ֖קֶר א֑וֹר וְהָֽאֲנָשִׁ֣ים שֻׁלְּח֔וּ הֵ֖מָּה וַֽחֲמֹֽרֵיהֶֽם:

44:4

They had just left the city and had not gone far, when Joseph said to his overseer, 'Set out and pursue those men. Catch up with them and say to them, 'Why did you repay good with evil? 
Hem yatse'u et-ha'ir lo hirchiku veYosef amar la'asher al-beyto kum redof acharey ha'anashim vehisagtam ve'amarta alehem lamah shilamtem ra'ah tachat tovah.

דהֵ֠ם יָֽצְא֣וּ אֶת־הָעִיר֘ לֹ֣א הִרְחִ֒יקוּ֒ וְיוֹסֵ֤ף אָמַר֙ לַֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־בֵּית֔וֹ ק֥וּם רְדֹ֖ף אַֽחֲרֵ֣י הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֑ים וְהִשַּׂגְתָּם֙ וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם לָ֛מָּה שִׁלַּמְתֶּ֥ם רָעָ֖ה תַּ֥חַת טוֹבָֽה:

44:5

It's [the cup] from which my master drinks, and he uses it for divination. You did a terrible thing.'' 
Halo zeh asher yishteh adoni bo vehu nachesh yenachesh bo hare'otem asher asitem.

ההֲל֣וֹא זֶ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִשְׁתֶּ֤ה אֲדֹנִי֙ בּ֔וֹ וְה֕וּא נַחֵ֥שׁ יְנַחֵ֖שׁ בּ֑וֹ הֲרֵֽעֹתֶ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר עֲשִׂיתֶֽם:

44:6

[The overseer] caught up with them, and repeated exactly those words to them. 
Vayasigem vayedaber alehem et-hadevarim ha'eleh.

ווַיַּשִּׂגֵ֑ם וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם אֶת־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה:

44:7

They said to him, 'Why do you say such things? Heaven forbid that we should do such a thing! 
Vayomeru elav lamah yedaber adoni kadvarim ha'eleh chalilah la'avadeycha me'asot kadavar hazeh.

זוַיֹּֽאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֔יו לָ֚מָּה יְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲדֹנִ֔י כַּדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה חָלִ֨ילָה֙ לַֽעֲבָדֶ֔יךָ מֵֽעֲשׂ֖וֹת כַּדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּֽה:

44:8

After all, we brought you back the money we found at the top of our packs - all the way from Canaan. How could we steal silver or gold from your master's house? 
Hen kesef asher matsanu befi amtechoteynu heshivonu eleycha me'erets Kena'an ve'eych nignov mibeyt adoneycha kesef o zahav.

חהֵ֣ן כֶּ֗סֶף אֲשֶׁ֤ר מָצָ֨אנוּ֙ בְּפִ֣י אַמְתְּחֹתֵ֔ינוּ הֱשִׁיבֹ֥נוּ אֵלֶ֖יךָ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וְאֵ֗יךְ נִגְנֹב֙ מִבֵּ֣ית אֲדֹנֶ֔יךָ כֶּ֖סֶף א֥וֹ זָהָֽב:

44:9

If any of us has it in his possession, he shall die. You can take the rest of us for slaves.' 
Asher yimatse ito me'avadeycha vamet vegam-anachnu nihyeh l'adoni la'avadim.

טאֲשֶׁ֨ר יִמָּצֵ֥א אִתּ֛וֹ מֵֽעֲבָדֶ֖יךָ וָמֵ֑ת וְגַם־אֲנַ֕חְנוּ נִֽהְיֶ֥ה לַֽאדֹנִ֖י לַֽעֲבָדִֽים:

44:10

'It should be as you declare,' he replied. 'But only the one with whom it is found will be my slave. The rest will be able to go free.' 
Vayomer gam-atah chedivreychem ken-hu asher yimatse ito yihyeh-li aved ve'atem tihyu neki'im.

יוַיֹּ֕אמֶר גַּם־עַתָּ֥ה כְדִבְרֵיכֶ֖ם כֶּן־ה֑וּא אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִמָּצֵ֤א אִתּוֹ֙ יִֽהְיֶה־לִּ֣י עָ֔בֶד וְאַתֶּ֖ם תִּֽהְי֥וּ נְקִיִּֽם:

44:11

Each one quickly lowered his pack to the ground, and they all opened their packs. 
Vayemaharu vayoridu ish et-amtachto artsah vayiftechu ish amtachto.

יאוַיְמַֽהֲר֗וּ וַיּוֹרִ֛דוּ אִ֥ישׁ אֶת־אַמְתַּחְתּ֖וֹ אָ֑רְצָה וַיִּפְתְּח֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ אַמְתַּחְתּֽוֹ:

44:12

[The overseer] inspected each one, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest. The chalice was found in Benjamin's pack. 
Vayechapes bagadol hechel uvakaton kilah vayimatse hagavia be'amtachat Binyamin.

יבוַיְחַפֵּ֕שׂ בַּגָּד֣וֹל הֵחֵ֔ל וּבַקָּטֹ֖ן כִּלָּ֑ה וַיִּמָּצֵא֙ הַגָּבִ֔יעַ בְּאַמְתַּ֖חַת בִּנְיָמִֽן:

44:13

[The brothers] tore their clothes in grief. Each one reloaded his donkey, and they returned to the city. 
Vayikre'u simlotam vaya'amos ish al-chamoro vayashuvu ha'irah.

יגוַיִּקְרְע֖וּ שִׂמְלֹתָ֑ם וַיַּֽעֲמֹס֙ אִ֣ישׁ עַל־חֲמֹר֔וֹ וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ הָעִֽירָה:

44:14

Last Reading
When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's palace, he was still there. They threw themselves on the ground before him. 
Vayavo Yehudah ve'echav beytah Yosef vehu odenu sham vayiplu lefanav artsah.

ידוַיָּבֹ֨א יְהוּדָ֤ה וְאֶחָיו֙ בֵּ֣יתָה יוֹסֵ֔ף וְה֖וּא עוֹדֶ֣נּוּ שָׁ֑ם וַיִּפְּל֥וּ לְפָנָ֖יו אָֽרְצָה:

44:15

Joseph said to them, 'What did you think you were doing? Don't you realize that a person like me can determine the truth by divination?' 
Vayomer lahem Yosef mah-hama'aseh hazeh asher asitem halo yedatem ki-nachesh yenachesh ish asher kamoni.

טווַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ יוֹסֵ֔ף מָֽה־הַמַּֽעֲשֶׂ֥ה הַזֶּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר עֲשִׂיתֶ֑ם הֲל֣וֹא יְדַעְתֶּ֔ם כִּֽי־נַחֵ֧שׁ יְנַחֵ֛שׁ אִ֖ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר כָּמֹֽנִי:

44:16

'What can we say to my lord?' replied Judah. 'How can we speak? How can we prove our innocence? God has uncovered our old guilt. Let us be your slaves - we and the one in whose possession the chalice was found.' 
Vayomer Yehudah mah-nomar ladoni mah-nedaber umah-nitstadak ha'Elohim matsa et-avon avadeycha hinenu avadim l'adoni gam-anachnu gam asher-nimtsa hagavia beyado.

טזוַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוּדָ֗ה מַה־נֹּאמַר֙ לַֽאדֹנִ֔י מַה־נְּדַבֵּ֖ר וּמַה־נִּצְטַדָּ֑ק הָֽאֱלֹהִ֗ים מָצָא֙ אֶת־עֲוֹ֣ן עֲבָדֶ֔יךָ הִנֶּנּ֤וּ עֲבָדִים֙ לַֽאדֹנִ֔י גַּם־אֲנַ֕חְנוּ גַּ֛ם אֲשֶׁר־נִמְצָ֥א הַגָּבִ֖יעַ בְּיָדֽוֹ:

44:17

'Heaven forbid that I do that!' said [Joseph] 'The one in whose possession the chalice was found shall be my slave. [The rest of] you can go in peace to your father.' 
Vayomer chalilah li me'asot zot ha'ish asher nimtsa hagavia beyado hu yihyeh-li aved ve'atem alu leshalom el-avichem.

יזוַיֹּ֕אמֶר חָלִ֣ילָה לִּ֔י מֵֽעֲשׂ֖וֹת זֹ֑את הָאִ֡ישׁ אֲשֶׁר֩ נִמְצָ֨א הַגָּבִ֜יעַ בְּיָד֗וֹ ה֚וּא יִֽהְיֶה־לִּ֣י עָ֔בֶד וְאַתֶּ֕ם עֲל֥וּ לְשָׁל֖וֹם אֶל־אֲבִיכֶֽם:

44:18

First Reading
Judah walked up to [Joseph] and said, 'Please, your highness, let me say something to you personally. Do not be angry with me, even though you are just like Pharaoh. 
Vayigash elav Yehudah vayomer bi adoni yedaber-na avdecha davar be'ozney adoni ve'al-yichar apcha be'avdecha ki chamocha keFar'oh.

יחוַיִּגַּ֨שׁ אֵלָ֜יו יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיֹּ֘אמֶר֘ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִי֒ יְדַבֶּר־נָ֨א עַבְדְּךָ֤ דָבָר֙ בְּאָזְנֵ֣י אֲדֹנִ֔י וְאַל־יִ֥חַר אַפְּךָ֖ בְּעַבְדֶּ֑ךָ כִּ֥י כָמ֖וֹךָ כְּפַרְעֹֽה:

44:19

'You asked if we still had a father or another brother. 
Adoni sha'al et-avadav lemor hayesh-lachem av o-ach.

יטאֲדֹנִ֣י שָׁאַ֔ל אֶת־עֲבָדָ֖יו לֵאמֹ֑ר הֲיֵשׁ־לָכֶ֥ם אָ֖ב אוֹ־אָֽח:

44:20

We told you, 'We have a father who is very old, and the youngest [brother] is a child of his old age. He had a brother who died, and thus, he is the only one of his mother's children still alive. His father loves him.' 
Vanomer el-adoni yesh-lanu av zaken veyeled zekunim katan ve'achiv met vayivater hu levado le'imo ve'aviv ahevo.

כוַנֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־אֲדֹנִ֔י יֶשׁ־לָ֨נוּ֙ אָ֣ב זָקֵ֔ן וְיֶ֥לֶד זְקֻנִ֖ים קָטָ֑ן וְאָחִ֣יו מֵ֔ת וַיִּוָּתֵ֨ר ה֧וּא לְבַדּ֛וֹ לְאִמּ֖וֹ וְאָבִ֥יו אֲהֵבֽוֹ:

44:21

'You said to us, 'Bring him to me, so that I may set my eyes on him.' 
Vatomer el-avadeycha horiduhu elay ve'asimah eyni alav.

כאוַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־עֲבָדֶ֔יךָ הֽוֹרִדֻ֖הוּ אֵלָ֑י וְאָשִׂ֥ימָה עֵינִ֖י עָלָֽיו:

44:22

We told you, 'The lad cannot leave his father. If he left him, his father would die.' 
Vanomer el-adoni lo-yuchal hana'ar la'azov et-aviv ve'azav et-aviv vamet.

כבוַנֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־אֲדֹנִ֔י לֹֽא־יוּכַ֥ל הַנַּ֖עַר לַֽעֲזֹ֣ב אֶת־אָבִ֑יו וְעָזַ֥ב אֶת־אָבִ֖יו וָמֵֽת:

44:23

You replied, 'If your youngest brother does not come with you, you shall not see my face again.' 
Vatomer el-avadeycha im-lo yered achichem hakaton itchem lo tosifun lir'ot panay.

כגוַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־עֲבָדֶ֔יךָ אִם־לֹ֥א יֵרֵ֛ד אֲחִיכֶ֥ם הַקָּטֹ֖ן אִתְּכֶ֑ם לֹ֥א תֹֽסִפ֖וּן לִרְא֥וֹת פָּנָֽי:

44:24

'We went to your servant our father and told him what you said. 
Vayehi ki alinu el-avdecha avi vanaged-lo et divrey adoni.

כדוַֽיְהִי֙ כִּ֣י עָלִ֔ינוּ אֶל־עַבְדְּךָ֖ אָבִ֑י וַנַּ֨גֶּד־ל֔וֹ אֵ֖ת דִּבְרֵ֥י אֲדֹנִֽי:

44:25

When our father told us to go back and get some food, 
Vayomer avinu shuvu shivru-lanu me'at-ochel.

כהוַיֹּ֖אמֶר אָבִ֑ינוּ שֻׁ֖בוּ שִׁבְרוּ־לָ֥נוּ מְעַט־אֹֽכֶל:

44:26

we replied, 'We cannot go. We can go only if our youngest brother is with us. If he is not with us, we cannot even see the man [in charge].' 
Vanomer lo nuchal laredet im-yesh achinu hakaton itanu veyaradnu ki-lo nuchal lir'ot pney ha'ish ve'achinu hakaton eynenu itanu.

כווַנֹּ֕אמֶר לֹ֥א נוּכַ֖ל לָרֶ֑דֶת אִם־יֵשׁ֩ אָחִ֨ינוּ הַקָּטֹ֤ן אִתָּ֨נוּ֙ וְיָרַ֔דְנוּ כִּי־לֹ֣א נוּכַ֗ל לִרְאוֹת֙ פְּנֵ֣י הָאִ֔ישׁ וְאָחִ֥ינוּ הַקָּטֹ֖ן אֵינֶ֥נּוּ אִתָּֽנוּ:

44:27

'Your servant our father said, 'You know that my wife [Rachel] bore me two sons. 
Vayomer avdecha avi eleynu atem yedatem ki shnayim yaldah-li ishti.

כזוַיֹּ֛אמֶר עַבְדְּךָ֥ אָבִ֖י אֵלֵ֑ינוּ אַתֶּ֣ם יְדַעְתֶּ֔ם כִּ֥י שְׁנַ֖יִם יָֽלְדָה־לִּ֥י אִשְׁתִּֽי:

44:28

One has already left me, and I assume that he was torn to pieces by wild animals. I have seen nothing of him until now. 
Vayetse ha'echad me'iti va'omar ach tarof toraf velo re'itiv ad-henah.

כחוַיֵּצֵ֤א הָֽאֶחָד֙ מֵֽאִתִּ֔י וָֽאֹמַ֕ר אַ֖ךְ טָרֹ֣ף טֹרָ֑ף וְלֹ֥א רְאִיתִ֖יו עַד־הֵֽנָּה:

44:29

Now you want to take this one from me too! If something were to happen to him, you will have brought my white head down to the grave in evil misery.' 
Ulekachtem gam-et-zeh me'im panay vekarahu ason vehoradetem et-seyvati bera'ah she'olah.

כטוּלְקַחְתֶּ֧ם גַּם־אֶת־זֶ֛ה מֵעִ֥ם פָּנַ֖י וְקָרָ֣הוּ אָס֑וֹן וְהֽוֹרַדְתֶּ֧ם אֶת־שֵֽׂיבָתִ֛י בְּרָעָ֖ה שְׁאֹֽלָה:

44:30

'And now, when I come to your servant our father, the lad will not be with us. His soul is bound up with [the lad's] soul! 
Ve'atah kevo'i el-avdecha avi vehana'ar eynenu itanu venafsho kshurah venafsho.

לוְעַתָּ֗ה כְּבֹאִי֙ אֶל־עַבְדְּךָ֣ אָבִ֔י וְהַנַּ֖עַר אֵינֶ֣נּוּ אִתָּ֑נוּ וְנַפְשׁ֖וֹ קְשׁוּרָ֥ה בְנַפְשֽׁוֹ:

44:31

Second Reading
When he sees that the lad is not there, he will die! I will have brought your servant our father's white head down to the grave in misery. 
Vehayah kir'oto ki-eyn hana'ar vamet vehoridu avadeycha et-seyvat avdecha avinu beyagon she'olah.

לאוְהָיָ֗ה כִּרְאוֹת֛וֹ כִּי־אֵ֥ין הַנַּ֖עַר וָמֵ֑ת וְהוֹרִ֨ידוּ עֲבָדֶ֜יךָ אֶת־שֵׂיבַ֨ת עַבְדְּךָ֥ אָבִ֛ינוּ בְּיָג֖וֹן שְׁאֹֽלָה:

44:32

Besides, I offered myself to my father as a guarantee for the lad, and I said, 'If I do not bring him back to you, I will have sinned to my father for all time.' 
Ki avdecha arav et-hana'ar me'im avi lemor im-lo avi'enu eleycha vechatati le-avi kol-hayamim.

לבכִּ֤י עַבְדְּךָ֙ עָרַ֣ב אֶת־הַנַּ֔עַר מֵעִ֥ם אָבִ֖י לֵאמֹ֑ר אִם־לֹ֤א אֲבִיאֶ֨נּוּ֙ אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְחָטָ֥אתִי לְאָבִ֖י כָּל־הַיָּמִֽים:

44:33

'So now let me remain as your slave in place of the lad. Let the lad go back with his brothers! 
Ve'atah yeshev-na avdecha tachat hana'ar eved ladoni vehana'ar ya'al im-echav.

לגוְעַתָּ֗ה יֵֽשֶׁב־נָ֤א עַבְדְּךָ֙ תַּ֣חַת הַנַּ֔עַר עֶ֖בֶד לַֽאדֹנִ֑י וְהַנַּ֖עַר יַ֥עַל עִם־אֶחָֽיו:

44:34

For how can I go back to my father if the lad is not with me? I cannot bear to see the evil misery that my father would suffer!' 
Ki-eych e'eleh el-avi vehana'ar eynenu iti pen er'eh vara asher yimtsa et-avi.

לדכִּי־אֵיךְ֙ אֶֽעֱלֶ֣ה אֶל־אָבִ֔י וְהַנַּ֖עַר אֵינֶ֣נּוּ אִתִּ֑י פֶּ֚ן אֶרְאֶ֣ה בָרָ֔ע אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִמְצָ֖א אֶת־אָבִֽי:
