Genesis - Chapter 47

47:1

Joseph went and told Pharaoh. He said, 'My father and brothers have come from Canaan, along with their sheep, their cattle, and all their belongings. They are now in the Goshen district.' 
Vayavo Yosef vayaged le-Far'oh vayomer avi ve'achay vetsonam uvekaram vechol-asher lahem ba'u me'erets Kena'an vehinam be'erets Goshen.

אוַיָּבֹ֣א יוֹסֵף֘ וַיַּגֵּ֣ד לְפַרְעֹה֒ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר אָבִ֨י וְאַחַ֜י וְצֹאנָ֤ם וּבְקָרָם֙ וְכָל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָהֶ֔ם בָּ֖אוּ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וְהִנָּ֖ם בְּאֶ֥רֶץ גּֽשֶׁן:

47:2

From among his brothers, he selected five men and presented them to Pharaoh. 
Umiktseh echav lakach chamishah anashim vayatsigem lifney Far'oh.

בוּמִקְצֵ֣ה אֶחָ֔יו לָקַ֖ח חֲמִשָּׁ֣ה אֲנָשִׁ֑ים וַיַּצִּגֵ֖ם לִפְנֵ֥י פַרְעֹֽה:

47:3

Pharaoh asked [Joseph's] brothers, 'What is your occupation?'

'We are shepherds,' they replied to Pharaoh, 'we and our fathers before us.' 
Vayomer Par'oh el-echav mah-ma'aseychem vayomru el-Par'oh ro'eh tson avadeycha gam-anachnu gam-avoteynu.

גוַיֹּ֧אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֛ה אֶל־אֶחָ֖יו מַה־מַּֽעֲשֵׂיכֶ֑ם וַיֹּֽאמְר֣וּ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֗ה רֹעֵ֥ה צֹאן֙ עֲבָדֶ֔יךָ גַּם־אֲנַ֖חְנוּ גַּם־אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ:

47:4

'We have come to stay awhile in your land,' they explained to Pharaoh, 'because there is no grazing for our flocks, so severe is the famine in Canaan. If you allow us, we will settle in the Goshen district.' 
Vayomru el-Par'oh lagur ba'arets banu ki-eyn mir'eh latson asher la-avadeycha ki-chaved hara'av be'erets Kena'an ve'atah yeshvu-na avadeycha be'erets Goshen.

דוַיֹּֽאמְר֣וּ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֗ה לָג֣וּר בָּאָ֘רֶץ֘ בָּ֒אנוּ֒ כִּי־אֵ֣ין מִרְעֶ֗ה לַצֹּאן֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לַֽעֲבָדֶ֔יךָ כִּֽי־כָבֵ֥ד הָֽרָעָ֖ב בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וְעַתָּ֛ה יֵֽשְׁבוּ־נָ֥א עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ בְּאֶ֥רֶץ גּֽשֶׁן:

47:5

Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Your father and brothers have now come to you. 
Vayomer Par'oh el-Yosef lemor avicha ve'acheycha ba'u eleycha.

הוַיֹּ֣אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֔ה אֶל־יוֹסֵ֖ף לֵאמֹ֑ר אָבִ֥יךָ וְאַחֶ֖יךָ בָּ֥אוּ אֵלֶֽיךָ:

47:6

The land of Egypt is at your disposal. Settle your father and brothers in the best area. Let them settle in the Goshen District. If you have capable men among them, you can appoint them as livestock officers over my [cattle].' 
Erets Mitsrayim lefaneycha hi bemeytav ha'arets hoshev et-avicha ve'et-acheycha yeshvu be'erets Goshen ve'im-yadata veyesh-bam anshey-chayil vesamtam sarey mikneh al-asher-li.

ואֶ֤רֶץ מִצְרַ֨יִם֙ לְפָנֶ֣יךָ הִ֔וא בְּמֵיטַ֣ב הָאָ֔רֶץ הוֹשֵׁ֥ב אֶת־אָבִ֖יךָ וְאֶת־אַחֶ֑יךָ יֵֽשְׁבוּ֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ גּ֔שֶׁן וְאִם־יָדַ֗עְתָּ וְיֶשׁ־בָּם֙ אַנְשֵׁי־חַ֔יִל וְשַׂמְתָּ֛ם שָׂרֵ֥י מִקְנֶ֖ה עַל־אֲשֶׁר־לִֽי:

47:7

Joseph brought his father Jacob and presented him to Pharaoh. Jacob blessed Pharaoh. 
Vayave Yosef et-Ya'akov aviv vaya'amidehu lifney Far-oh vayevarech Ya'akov et-Par'oh.

זוַיָּבֵ֤א יוֹסֵף֙ אֶת־יַֽעֲקֹ֣ב אָבִ֔יו וַיַּֽעֲמִדֵ֖הוּ לִפְנֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֑ה וַיְבָ֥רֶךְ יַֽעֲקֹ֖ב אֶת־פַּרְעֹֽה:

47:8

'How old are you?' asked Pharaoh of Jacob. 
Vayomer Par'oh el-Ya'akov kamah yemey shney chayeycha.

חוַיֹּ֥אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֖ה אֶל־יַֽעֲקֹ֑ב כַּמָּ֕ה יְמֵ֖י שְׁנֵ֥י חַיֶּיֽךָ:

47:9

'My journey through life has lasted 130 years,' replied Jacob. 'The days of my life have been few and hard. I did not live as long as my fathers did during their pilgrimage through life.' 
Vayomer Ya'akov el-Par'oh yemey shney meguray shloshim ume'at shanah me'at vera'im hayu yemey shney chayay velo hisigu et-yemey shney chayey avotay bimey megureyhem.

טוַיֹּ֤אמֶר יַֽעֲקֹב֙ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֔ה יְמֵי֙ שְׁנֵ֣י מְגוּרַ֔י שְׁלשִׁ֥ים וּמְאַ֖ת שָׁנָ֑ה מְעַ֣ט וְרָעִ֗ים הָיוּ֙ יְמֵי֙ שְׁנֵ֣י חַיַּ֔י וְלֹ֣א הִשִּׂ֗יגוּ אֶת־יְמֵי֙ שְׁנֵי֙ חַיֵּי֣ אֲבֹתַ֔י בִּימֵ֖י מְגֽוּרֵיהֶֽם:

47:10

With that, Jacob blessed Pharaoh and left his presence. 
Vayevarech Ya'akov et-Par'oh vayetse milifney Far'oh.

יוַיְבָ֥רֶךְ יַֽעֲקֹ֖ב אֶת־פַּרְעֹ֑ה וַיֵּצֵ֖א מִלִּפְנֵ֥י פַרְעֹֽה:

47:11

Seventh Reading
Joseph found a place for his father and brothers to live. He gave them an estate in the Rameses region, in the best area, as Pharaoh had ordered. 
Vayoshev Yosef et-aviv ve'et-echav vayiten lahem achuzah be'erets Mitsrayim bemeytav ha'arets be'erets Ramses ka'asher tsivah Far'oh.

יאוַיּוֹשֵׁ֣ב יוֹסֵף֘ אֶת־אָבִ֣יו וְאֶת־אֶחָיו֒ וַיִּתֵּ֨ן לָהֶ֤ם אֲחֻזָּה֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם בְּמֵיטַ֥ב הָאָ֖רֶץ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ רַעְמְסֵ֑ס כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר צִוָּ֥ה פַרְעֹֽה:

47:12

Joseph provided all the needs of his father, his brothers, and all his father's family, down to the very youngest. 
Vayechalkel Yosef et-aviv ve'et-echav ve'et kol-beyt aviv lechem lefi hataf.

יבוַיְכַלְכֵּ֤ל יוֹסֵף֙ אֶת־אָבִ֣יו וְאֶת־אֶחָ֔יו וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֑יו לֶ֖חֶם לְפִ֥י הַטָּֽף:

47:13

There was no bread in the entire area, since the famine was very severe. [The people of] Egypt and Canaan became weak with hunger. 
Velechem eyn bechol-ha'arets ki-chaved hara'av me'od vatelah erets Mitsrayim ve'erets Kena'an mipeney hara'av.

יגוְלֶ֤חֶם אֵין֙ בְּכָל־הָאָ֔רֶץ כִּֽי־כָבֵ֥ד הָֽרָעָ֖ב מְאֹ֑ד וַתֵּ֜לַהּ אֶ֤רֶץ מִצְרַ֨יִם֙ וְאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן מִפְּנֵ֖י הָֽרָעָֽב:

47:14

Joseph collected all the money in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the food [the people] were buying. Joseph brought [all] the money to Pharaoh's treasury. 
Vayelaket Yosef et-kol-hakesef hanimtsa ve'erets Mitsrayim uve'erets Kena'an bashever asher-hem shovrim vayave Yosef et-hakesef beytah Far'oh.

ידוַיְלַקֵּ֣ט יוֹסֵ֗ף אֶת־כָּל־הַכֶּ֨סֶף֙ הַנִּמְצָ֤א בְאֶֽרֶץ־מִצְרַ֨יִם֙ וּבְאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן בַּשֶּׁ֖בֶר אֲשֶׁר־הֵ֣ם שֹֽׁבְרִ֑ים וַיָּבֵ֥א יוֹסֵ֛ף אֶת־הַכֶּ֖סֶף בֵּ֥יתָה פַרְעֹֽה:

47:15

When the money in Egypt and Canaan was used up,Egyptians from all over came to Joseph. 'Give us bread!' they cried. 'Why should we die before you just because there is no money?' 
Vayitom hakesef me'erets Mitsrayim ume'erets Kena'an vayavo'u chol-Mitsrayim el-Yosef lemor havah-lanu lechem velamah namut negdecha ki afes kasef.

טווַיִּתֹּ֣ם הַכֶּ֗סֶף מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֘יִם֘ וּמֵאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֒עַן֒ וַיָּבֹ֩אוּ֩ כָל־מִצְרַ֨יִם אֶל־יוֹסֵ֤ף לֵאמֹר֙ הָֽבָה־לָּ֣נוּ לֶ֔חֶם וְלָ֥מָּה נָמ֖וּת נֶגְדֶּ֑ךָ כִּ֥י אָפֵ֖ס כָּֽסֶף:

47:16

'Bring your livestock,' replied Joseph. 'If there is no more money, I will give you [what you need] in exchange for your animals.' 
Vayomer Yosef havu mikneychem ve'etnah lachem bemikneychem im-afes kasef.

טזוַיֹּ֤אמֶר יוֹסֵף֙ הָב֣וּ מִקְנֵיכֶ֔ם וְאֶתְּנָ֥ה לָכֶ֖ם בְּמִקְנֵיכֶ֑ם אִם־אָפֵ֖ס כָּֽסֶף:

47:17

They brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, flocks of sheep, herds of cattle, and donkeys. He saw them through that year with bread in exchange for all their livestock. 
Vayavi'u et-mikneyhem el-Yosef vayiten lahem Yosef lechem basusim uvemikneh hatson uvemikneh habakar uvachamorim vayenahalem balechem bechol-miknehem bashanah hahi.

יזוַיָּבִ֣יאוּ אֶת־מִקְנֵיהֶם֘ אֶל־יוֹסֵף֒ וַיִּתֵּ֣ן לָהֶם֩ יוֹסֵ֨ף לֶ֜חֶם בַּסּוּסִ֗ים וּבְמִקְנֵ֥ה הַצֹּ֛אן וּבְמִקְנֵ֥ה הַבָּקָ֖ר וּבַֽחֲמֹרִ֑ים וַיְנַֽהֲלֵ֤ם בַּלֶּ֨חֶם֙ בְּכָל־מִקְנֵהֶ֔ם בַּשָּׁנָ֖ה הַהִֽוא:

47:18

The year came to an end. They came to him the next year, and said, 'We are not holding anything back from you, your highness. But since the money and animal stocks are used up, there is nothing left for you besides our dried-up bodies and our land. 
Vatitom hashanah hahi vayavo'u elav bashanah hashenit vayomru lo lo-nechached me'adoni ki im-tam hakesef umikneh habehemah el-adoni lo nish'ar lifney adoni bilti im-gviyatenu ve'admatenu.

יחוַתִּתֹּם֘ הַשָּׁנָ֣ה הַהִוא֒ וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ אֵלָ֜יו בַּשָּׁנָ֣ה הַשֵּׁנִ֗ית וַיֹּ֤אמְרוּ לוֹ֙ לֹֽא־נְכַחֵ֣ד מֵֽאֲדֹנִ֔י כִּ֚י אִם־תַּ֣ם הַכֶּ֔סֶף וּמִקְנֵ֥ה הַבְּהֵמָ֖ה אֶל־אֲדֹנִ֑י לֹ֤א נִשְׁאַר֙ לִפְנֵ֣י אֲדֹנִ֔י בִּלְתִּ֥י אִם־גְּוִיָּתֵ֖נוּ וְאַדְמָתֵֽנוּ:

47:19

Why should we die before your very eyes - us and our land? Buy our bodies and our land in exchange for bread. Let us become Pharaoh's serfs, and let our land [also be his]. Give us seed grain! Let us live and not die! Let the land not become desolate.' 
Lamah namut le'eyneycha gam-anachnu gam-admatenu kneh-otanu ve'et-admatenu balachem venihyeh anachnu ve'admatenu avadim le-Far'oh veten-zera venichyeh velo namut veha'adamah lo tesham.

יטלָ֧מָּה נָמ֣וּת לְעֵינֶ֗יךָ גַּם־אֲנַ֨חְנוּ֙ גַּם־אַדְמָתֵ֔נוּ קְנֵֽה־אֹתָ֥נוּ וְאֶת־אַדְמָתֵ֖נוּ בַּלָּ֑חֶם וְנִֽהְיֶ֞ה אֲנַ֤חְנוּ וְאַדְמָתֵ֨נוּ֙ עֲבָדִ֣ים לְפַרְעֹ֔ה וְתֶן־זֶ֗רַע וְנִֽחְיֶה֙ וְלֹ֣א נָמ֔וּת וְהָֽאֲדָמָ֖ה לֹ֥א תֵשָֽׁם:

47:20

Joseph [thus] bought up all the farm land in Egypt for Pharaoh. Every man in Egypt had sold his field, for the famine was too much for them, and the land became Pharaoh's property. 
Vayiken Yosef et-kol-admat Mitsrayim le-Far'oh ki-machru Mitsrayim ish sadehu ki-chazak alehem hara'av vatehi ha'arets le-Far'oh.

כוַיִּ֨קֶן יוֹסֵ֜ף אֶת־כָּל־אַדְמַ֤ת מִצְרַ֨יִם֙ לְפַרְעֹ֔ה כִּי־מָֽכְר֤וּ מִצְרַ֨יִם֙ אִ֣ישׁ שָׂדֵ֔הוּ כִּֽי־חָזַ֥ק עֲלֵהֶ֖ם הָרָעָ֑ב וַתְּהִ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ לְפַרְעֹֽה:

47:21

[Joseph] moved the people to the cities in all Egypt's borders, from one end to the other. 
Ve'et-ha'am he'evir oto le'arim miktseh gvul-Mitsrayim ve'ad-katsehu.

כאוְאֶ֨ת־הָעָ֔ם הֶֽעֱבִ֥יר אֹת֖וֹ לֶֽעָרִ֑ים מִקְצֵ֥ה גְבֽוּל־מִצְרַ֖יִם וְעַד־קָצֵֽהוּ:

47:22

The only land he did not buy up was that of the priests, since the priests had a [food] allotment from Pharaoh. They ate the [food] allotment that Pharaoh gave them, and did not have to sell their lands. 
Rak admat hakohanim lo kanah ki chok lakohanim me'et Par'oh ve'achlu et-chukam asher natan lahem Par'oh al-ken lo machru et-admatam.

כברַ֛ק אַדְמַ֥ת הַכֹּֽהֲנִ֖ים לֹ֣א קָנָ֑ה כִּי֩ חֹ֨ק לַכֹּֽהֲנִ֜ים מֵאֵ֣ת פַּרְעֹ֗ה וְאָֽכְל֤וּ אֶת־חֻקָּם֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר נָתַ֤ן לָהֶם֙ פַּרְעֹ֔ה עַל־כֵּ֕ן לֹ֥א מָֽכְר֖וּ אֶת־אַדְמָתָֽם:

47:23

Joseph announced to the people, 'Today I have purchased your [bodies] and your lands for Pharaoh. Here is seed grain for you. Plant your fields. 
Vayomer Yosef el-ha'am hen kaniti etchem hayom ve'et-admatchem le-Far'oh he-lachem zera uzratem et-ha'adamah.

כגוַיֹּ֤אמֶר יוֹסֵף֙ אֶל־הָעָ֔ם הֵן֩ קָנִ֨יתִי אֶתְכֶ֥ם הַיּ֛וֹם וְאֶת־אַדְמַתְכֶ֖ם לְפַרְעֹ֑ה הֵֽא־לָכֶ֣ם זֶ֔רַע וּזְרַעְתֶּ֖ם אֶת־הָֽאֲדָמָֽה:

47:24

When it produces grain, you will have to give a fifth to Pharaoh. The other four parts will be yours, as seed grain for your fields, and as food for you, your wives and your children.' 
Vehayah batvu'ot untatem chamishit le-Far'oh ve'arba hayadot yihyeh lachem lezera hasadeh ule'ochelchem vela'asher bevateychem vele'echol letapchem.

כדוְהָיָה֙ בַּתְּבוּאֹ֔ת וּנְתַתֶּ֥ם חֲמִישִׁ֖ית לְפַרְעֹ֑ה וְאַרְבַּ֣ע הַיָּדֹ֡ת יִֽהְיֶ֣ה לָכֶם֩ לְזֶ֨רַע הַשָּׂדֶ֧ה וּלְאָכְלְכֶ֛ם וְלַֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּבָֽתֵּיכֶ֖ם וְלֶֽאֱכֹ֥ל לְטַפְּכֶֽם:

47:25

Last Reading
'You have saved our lives,' they responded. 'Just let us find favor in your eyes, and we will be Pharaoh's serfs.' 
Vayomeru hecheyitanu nimtsa-chen be'eyney adoni vehayinu avadim le-Far'oh.

כהוַיֹּֽאמְר֖וּ הֶֽחֱיִתָ֑נוּ נִמְצָא־חֵן֙ בְּעֵינֵ֣י אֲדֹנִ֔י וְהָיִ֥ינוּ עֲבָדִ֖ים לְפַרְעֹֽה:

47:26

Joseph set down a decree (that is in force until today) that one-fifth of [whatever grows on] the farm land of Egypt belonged to Pharaoh. Only the priestly lands did not belong to Pharaoh. 
Vayasem otah Yosef lechok ad-hayom hazeh al-admat Mitsrayim le-Far'oh lachomesh rak admat hakohanim levadam lo hayetah le-Far'oh.

כווַיָּ֣שֶׂם אֹתָ֣הּ יוֹסֵ֡ף לְחֹק֩ עַד־הַיּ֨וֹם הַזֶּ֜ה עַל־אַדְמַ֥ת מִצְרַ֛יִם לְפַרְעֹ֖ה לַחֹ֑מֶשׁ רַ֞ק אַדְמַ֤ת הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ לְבַדָּ֔ם לֹ֥א הָֽיְתָ֖ה לְפַרְעֹֽה:

47:27

Meanwhile, [the fledgling nation of] Israel lived in Egypt, in the Goshen district. They acquired property there, and were fertile, with their population increasing very rapidly. 
Vayeshev Yisra'el be'erets Mitsrayim be'erets Goshen vaye'achazu vah vayifru vayirbu me'od.

כזוַיֵּ֧שֶׁב יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם בְּאֶ֣רֶץ גּ֑שֶׁן וַיֵּאָֽחֲז֣וּ בָ֔הּ וַיִּפְר֥וּ וַיִּרְבּ֖וּ מְאֹֽד:

47:28

First Reading
Jacob made Egypt his home for 17 years. He lived to be 147 years old. 
Vayechi Ya'akov be'erets Mitsrayim shva esreh shanah vayehi yemey-Ya'akov shney chayav sheva shanim ve'arba'im ume'at shanah.

כחוַיְחִ֤י יַֽעֲקֹב֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם שְׁבַ֥ע עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה שָׁנָ֑ה וַיְהִ֤י יְמֵי־יַֽעֲקֹב֙ שְׁנֵ֣י חַיָּ֔יו שֶׁ֣בַע שָׁנִ֔ים וְאַרְבָּעִ֥ים וּמְאַ֖ת שָׁנָֽה:

47:29

When Israel realized that he would soon die, he called for his son Joseph. 'If you really want to do me a kindness,' he said, 'place your hand under my thigh. Act toward me with truth and kindness, and do not bury me in Egypt. 
Vayikrevu yemey Yisra'el lamut vayikra liveno le-Yosef vayomer lo im-na matsati chen be'eyneycha sim-na yadecha tachat yerechi ve'asita imadi chesed ve'emet al-na tikbereni beMitsrayim.

כטוַיִּקְרְב֣וּ יְמֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֘ לָמוּת֒ וַיִּקְרָ֣א | לִבְנ֣וֹ לְיוֹסֵ֗ף וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ אִם־נָ֨א מָצָ֤אתִי חֵן֙ בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ שִֽׂים־נָ֥א יָֽדְךָ֖ תַּ֣חַת יְרֵכִ֑י וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ עִמָּדִי֙ חֶ֣סֶד וֶֽאֱמֶ֔ת אַל־נָ֥א תִקְבְּרֵ֖נִי בְּמִצְרָֽיִם:

47:30

Let me lie with my fathers. Carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their grave.'

'I will do as you say,' replied [Joseph]. 
Veshachavti im-avotay unesatani mi-Mitsrayim ukvartani bikevuratam vayomer anochi e'eseh chidvarecha.

לוְשָֽׁכַבְתִּי֙ עִם־אֲבֹתַ֔י וּנְשָׂאתַ֨נִי֙ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם וּקְבַרְתַּ֖נִי בִּקְבֻֽרָתָ֑ם וַיֹּאמַ֕ר אָֽנֹכִ֖י אֶעְשֶׂ֥ה כִדְבָרֶֽךָ:

47:31

'Swear to me,' said [Jacob].

[Joseph] made an oath to him, and, from where he was on the bed, Israel bowed
Vayomer hishave'ah li vayishava lo vayishtachu Yisra'el al-rosh hamitah.
