49:1

Fourth Reading
Jacob called for his sons. [When they came,] he said, 'Come together, and I will tell you what will happen in the course of time. 
Vayikra Ya'akov el-banav vayomer he'asefu ve'agidah lachem et asher-yikra etchem be'acharit hayamim.

אוַיִּקְרָ֥א יַֽעֲקֹ֖ב אֶל־בָּנָ֑יו וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הֵאָֽסְפוּ֙ וְאַגִּ֣ידָה לָכֶ֔ם אֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁר־יִקְרָ֥א אֶתְכֶ֖ם בְּאַֽחֲרִ֥ית הַיָּמִֽים:

49:2

Come and listen, sons of Jacob; listen to your father Israel. 
Hikavtsu veshim'u beney Ya'akov veshim'u el-Yisra'el avichem.

בהִקָּֽבְצ֥וּ וְשִׁמְע֖וּ בְּנֵ֣י יַֽעֲקֹ֑ב וְשִׁמְע֖וּ אֶל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל אֲבִיכֶֽם:

49:3

'Reuben, you are my firstborn, my strength and the beginning of my manhood, first in rank and first in power. 
Re'uven bechori atah kochi vereshit oni yeter set veyeter az.

גרְאוּבֵן֙ בְּכֹ֣רִי אַ֔תָּה כֹּחִ֖י וְרֵאשִׁ֣ית אוֹנִ֑י יֶ֥תֶר שְׂאֵ֖ת וְיֶ֥תֶר עָֽז:

49:4

[But because you were] unstable as water, you will no longer be first. This is because you moved your father's beds, committing a profane act. He moved my bed! 
Pachaz kamayim al-totar ki alita mishkevey avicha az chilalta yetsu'i alah.

דפַּ֤חַז כַּמַּ֨יִם֙ אַל־תּוֹתַ֔ר כִּ֥י עָלִ֖יתָ מִשְׁכְּבֵ֣י אָבִ֑יךָ אָ֥ז חִלַּ֖לְתָּ יְצוּעִ֥י עָלָֽה:

49:5

'Simeon and Levi are a pair; instruments of crime are theirwares. 
Shim'on veLevi achim kley chamas mecheroteyhem.

השִׁמְע֥וֹן וְלֵוִ֖י אַחִ֑ים כְּלֵ֥י חָמָ֖ס מְכֵרֹֽתֵיהֶֽם:

49:6

Let my soul not enter their plot; let my spirit not unite with their meeting - for they have killed men with anger,maimed bulls with will. 
Besodam al-tavo nafshi bikehalam al-techad kevodi ki ve'apam hargu ish uvirtsonam ikru-shor.

ובְּסֹדָם֙ אַל־תָּבֹ֣א נַפְשִׁ֔י בִּקְהָלָ֖ם אַל־תֵּחַ֣ד כְּבֹדִ֑י כִּ֤י בְאַפָּם֙ הָ֣רְגוּ אִ֔ישׁ וּבִרְצֹנָ֖ם עִקְּרוּ־שֽׁוֹר:

49:7

Cursed be their rage, for it is fierce, and their fury, for it is cruel. I will disperse them in Jacob, scatter them in Israel. 
Arur apam ki az ve'evratam ki kashatah achalkem beYa'akov va'afitsem beYisra'el.

זאָר֤וּר אַפָּם֙ כִּ֣י עָ֔ז וְעֶבְרָתָ֖ם כִּ֣י קָשָׁ֑תָה אֲחַלְּקֵ֣ם בְּיַֽעֲקֹ֔ב וַֽאֲפִיצֵ֖ם בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל:

49:8

'Judah, your brothers shall submit (yodu) to you. Your hand shall be on your enemies' necks; your father's sons shall bow to you. 
Yehudah atah yoducha acheycha yadecha be'oref oyveycha yishtachavu lecha bney avicha.

חיְהוּדָ֗ה אַתָּה֙ יוֹד֣וּךָ אַחֶ֔יךָ יָֽדְךָ֖ בְּעֹ֣רֶף אֹֽיְבֶ֑יךָ יִשְׁתַּֽחֲו֥וּ לְךָ֖ בְּנֵ֥י אָבִֽיךָ:

49:9

'Young lion, Judah, you have risen from prey, my son. He crouches, lies like a lion, like an awesome lion, who will dare rouse him? 
Gur aryeh Yehudah miteref beni alita kara ravats ke'aryeh uchelavi mi yekimenu.

טגּ֤וּר אַרְיֵה֙ יְהוּדָ֔ה מִטֶּ֖רֶף בְּנִ֣י עָלִ֑יתָ כָּרַ֨ע רָבַ֧ץ כְּאַרְיֵ֛ה וּכְלָבִ֖יא מִ֥י יְקִימֶֽנּוּ:

49:10

'The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor legislation from his descendants. Nations will submit to him until the finaltranquility comes. 
Lo-yasur shevet mi-Yehudah umechokek mibeyn raglav ad ki-yavo shiloh velo yikhat amim.

ילֹֽא־יָס֥וּר שֵׁ֨בֶט֙ מִֽיהוּדָ֔ה וּמְחֹקֵ֖ק מִבֵּ֣ין רַגְלָ֑יו עַ֚ד כִּֽי־יָבֹ֣א שִׁילֹ֔ה וְל֖וֹ יִקְּהַ֥ת עַמִּֽים:

49:11

'He loads down his donkey with a [single] grapevine, his young donkey with a single vine branch. He even washes his clothes in wine, his cloak in the blood of grapes. 
Osri lagefen iroh velasorekah beni atono kibes bayayin levusho uvedam anavim sutoh.

יאאֹֽסְרִ֤י לַגֶּ֨פֶן֙ עִיר֔וֹ (כתיב עירה) וְלַשּֽׂרֵקָ֖ה בְּנִ֣י אֲתֹנ֑וֹ כִּבֵּ֤ס בַּיַּ֨יִן֙ לְבֻשׁ֔וֹ וּבְדַם־עֲנָבִ֖ים סוּתֽוֹ (כתיב סותה) :

49:12

But his eyes are more sparkling than the wine, his teeth whiter than milk. 
Chachlili eynayim miyayin ulven-shinayim mechalav.

יבחַכְלִילִ֥י עֵינַ֖יִם מִיָּ֑יִן וּלְבֶן־שִׁנַּ֖יִם מֵֽחָלָֽב:

49:13

'Zebulun shall settle the seashores; he will be a harbor for ships; his border shall reach Sidon. 
Zevulun lechof yamim yishkon vehu lechof onyot veyarchato al-Tsidon.

יגזְבוּלֻ֕ן לְח֥וֹף יַמִּ֖ים יִשְׁכֹּ֑ן וְהוּא֙ לְח֣וֹף אֳנִיֹּ֔ת וְיַרְכָת֖וֹ עַל־צִידֹֽן:

49:14

'Issachar is a strong-boned donkey, stretching out between the saddlebags. 
Yisachar chamor garem rovets beyn hamishpetayim.

ידיִשָּׂשכָ֖ר חֲמֹ֣ר גָּ֑רֶם רֹבֵ֖ץ בֵּ֥ין הַמִּשְׁפְּתָֽיִם:

49:15

But he sees that the resting place is good, and that the land is pleasant, so he will bend his back to the load, working like a slave. 
Vayar menuchah ki tov ve'et-ha'arets ki na'emah vayet shichmo lisbol vayehi lemas-oved.

טווַיַּ֤רְא מְנֻחָה֙ כִּ֣י ט֔וֹב וְאֶת־הָאָ֖רֶץ כִּ֣י נָעֵ֑מָה וַיֵּ֤ט שִׁכְמוֹ֙ לִסְבֹּ֔ל וַיְהִ֖י לְמַס־עֹבֵֽד:

49:16

'Dan shall fight for (dan) his people, like any one of the tribes of Israel. 
Dan yadin amo ke'achad shivtey Yisra'el.

טזדָּ֖ן יָדִ֣ין עַמּ֑וֹ כְּאַחַ֖ד שִׁבְטֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל:

49:17

Let Dan be a snake on the road, a viper on the path, biting the horse's heel, so the rider falls backward. 
Yehi Dan nachash aley-derech Shfifon aley-orach hanoshech ikvey-sus vayipol rochevo achor.

יזיְהִי־דָן֙ נָחָ֣שׁ עֲלֵי־דֶ֔רֶךְ שְׁפִיפֹ֖ן עֲלֵי־אֹ֑רַח הַנּשֵׁךְ֙ עִקְּבֵי־ס֔וּס וַיִּפֹּ֥ל רֹֽכְב֖וֹ אָחֽוֹר:

49:18

I pray that God will help you. 
Lishu'atcha kiviti Adonay.

יחלִֽישׁוּעָֽתְךָ֖ קִוִּ֥יתִי יְהֹוָֽה:

49:19

Fifth Reading
'Raiders (gad) shall raid Gad, but he will raid at [their] heel. 
Gad gedud yegudenu vehu yagud akev.

יטגָּ֖ד גְּד֣וּד יְגוּדֶ֑נּוּ וְה֖וּא יָגֻ֥ד עָקֵֽב:

49:20

'From Asher shall come the richest foods; he shall provide the king's delights. 
Me'Asher shmenah lachmo vehu yiten ma'adaney-melech.

כמֵֽאָשֵׁ֖ר שְׁמֵנָ֣ה לַחְמ֑וֹ וְה֥וּא יִתֵּ֖ן מַֽעֲדַנֵּי־מֶֽלֶךְ:

49:21

Naphtali is a deer running free; he delivers words of beauty. 
Naftali ayalah shluchah hanoten imrey-shafer.

כאנַפְתָּלִ֖י אַיָּלָ֣ה שְׁלֻחָ֑ה הַנֹּתֵ֖ן אִמְרֵי־שָֽׁפֶר:

49:22

'Joseph is a fruitful son, [like] a fruitful vine by thefountain, with branches running over the wall. 
Ben porat Yosef ben porat aley-ayin banot tsa'adah aley-shur.

כבבֵּ֤ן פֹּרָת֙ יוֹסֵ֔ף בֵּ֥ן פֹּרָ֖ת עֲלֵי־עָ֑יִן בָּנ֕וֹת צָֽעֲדָ֖ה עֲלֵי־שֽׁוּר:

49:23

'[People] made his life bitter and attacked him; masters of strife made him their target. 
Vayemararuhu varobu vayistemuhu ba'aley chitsim.

כגוַיְמָֽרֲרֻ֖הוּ וָרֹ֑בּוּ וַיִּשְׂטְמֻ֖הוּ בַּֽעֲלֵ֥י חִצִּֽים:

49:24

But his resolution remained firm, and his arms were [eventually] bedecked with gold. This was from Jacob's Champion, and from then on, he became a shepherd, a builder of Israel. 
Vateshev be'eytan kashto vayafozu zro'ey yadav midey avir Ya'akov misham ro'eh even Yisra'el.

כדוַתֵּ֤שֶׁב בְּאֵיתָן֙ קַשְׁתּ֔וֹ וַיָּפֹ֖זּוּ זְרֹעֵ֣י יָדָ֑יו מִידֵי֙ אֲבִ֣יר יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב מִשָּׁ֥ם רֹעֶ֖ה אֶ֥בֶן יִשְׂרָאֵֽל:

49:25

'[This was] from your father's God, who will [still] help you, and [from] the Almighty, who will bless you. [Yours will be] the blessings of heaven above, the blessing of the water lying beneath, the blessing ofbreast and womb. 
Me'el avicha veya'azreka ve'et shaday vivaracheka birchot shamayim me'al birchot tehom rovetset tachat birchot shadayim varacham.

כהמֵאֵ֨ל אָבִ֜יךָ וְיַעְזְרֶ֗ךָּ וְאֵ֤ת שַׁדַּי֙ וִֽיבָ֣רֲכֶ֔ךָּ בִּרְכֹ֤ת שָׁמַ֨יִם֙ מֵעָ֔ל בִּרְכֹ֥ת תְּה֖וֹם רֹבֶ֣צֶת תָּ֑חַת בִּרְכֹ֥ת שָׁדַ֖יִם וָרָֽחַם:

49:26

'May your father's blessing add to the blessing of my parents, lasting as long as the eternal hills. May they be for Joseph's head, for the brow of the elect of his brothers. 
Birchot avicha gavru al-birchot horay ad-ta'avat giv'ot olam tihi'eynah lerosh Yosef ulekodekod nezir echav.

כובִּרְכֹ֣ת אָבִ֗יךָ גָּֽבְרוּ֙ עַל־בִּרְכֹ֣ת הוֹרַ֔י עַד־תַּֽאֲוַ֖ת גִּבְעֹ֣ת עוֹלָ֑ם תִּֽהְיֶ֨יןָ֙ לְרֹ֣אשׁ יוֹסֵ֔ף וּלְקָדְקֹ֖ד נְזִ֥יר אֶחָֽיו:

49:27

Sixth Reading
'Benjamin is a vicious wolf. He eats a portion in the morning, and divides his prey in the evening.' 
Binyamin ze'ev yitraf baboker yochal ad vela'erev yechalek shalal.

כזבִּנְיָמִין֙ זְאֵ֣ב יִטְרָ֔ף בַּבֹּ֖קֶר יֹ֣אכַל עַ֑ד וְלָעֶ֖רֶב יְחַלֵּ֥ק שָׁלָֽל:

49:28

All these are the tribes of Israel, twelve in all, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them. He gave each one his own special blessing. 
Kol-eleh shivtey Yisra'el shneym asar vezot asher-diber lahem avihem vayevarech otam ish asher kevirchato berach otam.

כחכָּל־אֵ֛לֶּה שִׁבְטֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל שְׁנֵ֣ים עָשָׂ֑ר וְ֠זֹ֠את אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֨ר לָהֶ֤ם אֲבִיהֶם֙ וַיְבָ֣רֶךְ אוֹתָ֔ם אִ֛ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר כְּבִרְכָת֖וֹ בֵּרַ֥ךְ אֹתָֽם:

49:29

[Jacob] then gave [his sons] his final instructions. 'I am going to join my people [in death],' he said. 'Bring me to my fathers, to be buried in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite. 
Vayetsav otam vayomer alehem ani ne'esaf el-ami kivru oti el-avotay el-hamearah asher bisdeh Efron haChiti.

כטוַיְצַ֣ו אוֹתָ֗ם וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ אֲנִי֙ נֶֽאֱסָ֣ף אֶל־עַמִּ֔י קִבְר֥וּ אֹתִ֖י אֶל־אֲבֹתָ֑י אֶ֨ל־הַמְּעָרָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר בִּשְׂדֵ֖ה עֶפְר֥וֹן הַֽחִתִּֽי:

49:30

[This is] the cave in Makhpelah Field, bordering Mamre, in the land of Canaan. Abraham bought it along with the field from Ephron the Hittite as burial property. 
Bamearah asher bisedeh haMachpelah asher-al-peney Mamre be'erets Kena'an asher kanah Avraham et-hasadeh me'et Efron haChiti la'achuzat kaver.

לבַּמְּעָרָ֞ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר בִּשְׂדֵ֧ה הַמַּכְפֵּלָ֛ה אֲשֶׁר־עַל־פְּנֵ֥י מַמְרֵ֖א בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן אֲשֶׁר֩ קָנָ֨ה אַבְרָהָ֜ם אֶת־הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה מֵאֵ֛ת עֶפְרֹ֥ן הַֽחִתִּ֖י לַֽאֲחֻזַּת־קָֽבֶר:

49:31

This is where Abraham and his wife Sarah are buried; this is where Isaac and his wife Rebecca are buried; and this is where I buried Leah. 
Shamah kaveru et-Avraham ve'et Sarah ishto shamah kaveru et-Yitschak ve'et Rivkah ishto veshamah kavarti et-Leah.

לאשָׁ֣מָּה קָֽבְר֞וּ אֶת־אַבְרָהָ֗ם וְאֵת֙ שָׂרָ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ שָׁ֚מָּה קָֽבְר֣וּ אֶת־יִצְחָ֔ק וְאֵ֖ת רִבְקָ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֑וֹ וְשָׁ֥מָּה קָבַ֖רְתִּי אֶת־לֵאָֽה:

49:32

The purchase of the field and its cave from the children of Heth [is still recognized].' 
Mikneh hasadeh vehamearah asher-bo me'et beney Chet.

לבמִקְנֵ֧ה הַשָּׂדֶ֛ה וְהַמְּעָרָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־בּ֖וֹ מֵאֵ֥ת בְּנֵי־חֵֽת:

49:33

Jacob thus concluded his instructions to his sons. He drew his feet back onto the bed, breathed his last, and was brought back to his people. 
Vayechal Ya'akov letsavot et-banav vaye'esof raglav el-hamitah vayigva vaye'asef el-amav.

לגוַיְכַ֤ל יַֽעֲקֹב֙ לְצַוֹּ֣ת אֶת־בָּנָ֔יו וַיֶּֽאֱסֹ֥ף רַגְלָ֖יו אֶל־הַמִּטָּ֑ה וַיִּגְוַ֖ע וַיֵּאָ֥סֶף אֶל־עַמָּֽיו:
