Exodus - Chapter 10

10:1

First Reading
God said to Moses, 'Go to Pharaoh. I have made him and his advisors stubborn, so that I will be able to demonstrate these miraculous signs among them. 
Vayomer Adonay el-Moshe bo el-Par'oh ki-ani hichbadeti et-libo ve'et-lev avadav lema'an shiti ototay eleh bekirbo.

אוַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־משֶׁ֔ה בֹּ֖א אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֑ה כִּֽי־אֲנִ֞י הִכְבַּ֤דְתִּי אֶת־לִבּוֹ֙ וְאֶת־לֵ֣ב עֲבָדָ֔יו לְמַ֗עַן שִׁתִ֛י אֹֽתֹתַ֥י אֵ֖לֶּה בְּקִרְבּֽוֹ:

10:2

You will then be able to confide to your children and grandchildren how I made fools of the Egyptians, and how I performed miraculous signs among them. You will then fully realize that I am God.' 
Ulema'an tesaper be'ozney vincha uven-bincha et asher hit'alalti beMitsrayim ve'et-ototay asher-samti vam vidatem ki-ani Adonay.

בוּלְמַ֡עַן תְּסַפֵּר֩ בְּאָזְנֵ֨י בִנְךָ֜ וּבֶן־בִּנְךָ֗ אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁ֤ר הִתְעַלַּ֨לְתִּי֙ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם וְאֶת־אֹֽתֹתַ֖י אֲשֶׁר־שַׂ֣מְתִּי בָ֑ם וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָֽה:

10:3

Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh. In the name of God, Lord of the Hebrews, they said to him, 'How long will you refuse to submit to Me? Let My people leave and serve Me. 
Vayavo Moshe ve'Aharon el-Par'oh vayomeru elav koh-amar Adonay Elohey ha'Ivrim ad-matay me'anta le'anot mipanay shalach ami veya'avduni.

גוַיָּבֹ֨א משֶׁ֣ה וְאַֽהֲרֹן֘ אֶל־פַּרְעֹה֒ וַיֹּֽאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּֽה־אָמַ֤ר יְהֹוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י הָֽעִבְרִ֔ים עַד־מָתַ֣י מֵאַ֔נְתָּ לֵֽעָנֹ֖ת מִפָּנָ֑י שַׁלַּ֥ח עַמִּ֖י וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי:

10:4

If you refuse to let My people leave, I will bring locusts to your territories tomorrow. 
Ki im-ma'en atah leshale'ach et-ami hineni mevi machar arbeh bigvulecha.

דכִּ֛י אִם־מָאֵ֥ן אַתָּ֖ה לְשַׁלֵּ֣חַ אֶת־עַמִּ֑י הִֽנְנִ֨י מֵבִ֥יא מָחָ֛ר אַרְבֶּ֖ה בִּגְבֻלֶֽךָ:

10:5

They will cover every visible speck of land, so that you will not be able to see the ground, and they will eat all that was spared for you by the hail, devouring every tree growing in the field. 
Vechisah et-eyn ha'arets velo yuchal lir'ot et-ha'arets ve'achal et-yeter hapletah hanish'eret lachem min-habarad ve'achal et-kol-ha'ets hatsome'ach lachem min-hasadeh.

הוְכִסָּה֙ אֶת־עֵ֣ין הָאָ֔רֶץ וְלֹ֥א יוּכַ֖ל לִרְאֹ֣ת אֶת־הָאָ֑רֶץ וְאָכַ֣ל | אֶת־יֶ֣תֶר הַפְּלֵטָ֗ה הַנִּשְׁאֶ֤רֶת לָכֶם֙ מִן־הַבָּרָ֔ד וְאָכַל֙ אֶת־כָּל־הָעֵ֔ץ הַצֹּמֵ֥חַ לָכֶ֖ם מִן־הַשָּׂדֶֽה:

10:6

They will fill your palaces, as well as the houses of your officials and of all Egypt. It will be something that your fathers and your fathers' fathers have never seen, since the day they were in the land.'

With that, [Moses] turned his back and left Pharaoh. 
Umal'u vateycha uvatey chol-avadeycha uvatey chol-Mitsrayim asher lo-ra'u avoteycha va'avot avoteycha miyom heyotam al-ha'adamah ad hayom hazeh vayifen vayetse me'im Par'oh.

ווּמָֽלְא֨וּ בָתֶּ֜יךָ וּבָתֵּ֣י כָל־עֲבָדֶ֘יךָ֘ וּבָתֵּ֣י כָל־מִצְרַ֒יִם֒ אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹֽא־רָא֤וּ אֲבֹתֶ֨יךָ֙ וַֽאֲב֣וֹת אֲבֹתֶ֔יךָ מִיּ֗וֹם הֱיוֹתָם֙ עַל־הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה עַ֖ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה וַיִּ֥פֶן וַיֵּצֵ֖א מֵעִ֥ם פַּרְעֹֽה:

10:7

Pharaoh's officials said to him, 'How long will this [man] continue to be a menace to us? Let the men go, and let them serve God their Lord. Don't you yet realize that Egypt is being destroyed?' 
Vayomeru avdey Far'oh elav ad-matay yihyeh zeh lanu lemokesh shalach et-ha'anashim veya'avdu et-Adonay Eloheyhem haterem teda ki avdah Mitsrayim.

זוַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֩ עַבְדֵ֨י פַרְעֹ֜ה אֵלָ֗יו עַד־מָתַי֙ יִֽהְיֶ֨ה זֶ֥ה לָ֨נוּ֙ לְמוֹקֵ֔שׁ שַׁלַּח֙ אֶת־הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים וְיַֽעַבְד֖וּ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֑ם הֲטֶ֣רֶם תֵּדַ֔ע כִּ֥י אָֽבְדָ֖ה מִצְרָֽיִם:

10:8

Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. 'Go serve God your Lord,' he said. 'But exactly who will be going?' 
Vayushav et-Moshe ve'et-Aharon el-Par'oh vayomer alehem lechu ivdu et-Adonay Eloheychem mi vami haholechim.

חוַיּוּשַׁ֞ב אֶת־משֶׁ֤ה וְאֶת־אַֽהֲרֹן֙ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם לְכ֥וּ עִבְד֖וּ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֑ם מִ֥י וָמִ֖י הַהֹֽלְכִֽים:

10:9

'Young and old alike will go,' replied Moses. 'We will go with our sons and our daughters, with our sheep and cattle. It is a festival to God for [all of] us.' 
Vayomer Moshe bine'areynu uvizkeneynu nelech bevaneynu uvivnotenu betsonenu uvivkarenu nelech ki chag-Adonay lanu.

טוַיֹּ֣אמֶר משֶׁ֔ה בִּנְעָרֵ֥ינוּ וּבִזְקֵנֵ֖ינוּ נֵלֵ֑ךְ בְּבָנֵ֨ינוּ וּבִבְנוֹתֵ֜נוּ בְּצֹאנֵ֤נוּ וּבִבְקָרֵ֨נוּ֙ נֵלֵ֔ךְ כִּ֥י חַג־יְהֹוָ֖ה לָֽנוּ:

10:10

'May God only be with you just as I will let you leave with your children!' replied Pharaoh. 'You must realize thatyou will be confronted by evil. 
Vayomer alehem yehi chen Adonay imachem ka'asher ashalach etchem ve'et-tapchem re'u ki ra'ah neged peneychem.

יוַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֗ם יְהִ֨י כֵ֤ן יְהֹוָה֙ עִמָּכֶ֔ם כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר אֲשַׁלַּ֥ח אֶתְכֶ֖ם וְאֶת־טַפְּכֶ֑ם רְא֕וּ כִּ֥י רָעָ֖ה נֶ֥גֶד פְּנֵיכֶֽם:

10:11

But that's not the way it will be. Let the males go and worship God, if that's really what you want!' With that, he had them expelled from his presence. 
Lo chen lechu-na hagevarim ve'ivdu et-Adonay ki otah atem mevakshim vayegaresh otam me'et peney Far'oh.

יאלֹ֣א כֵ֗ן לְכ֙וּ נָ֤א הַגְּבָרִים֙ וְעִבְד֣וּ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֔ה כִּ֥י אֹתָ֖הּ אַתֶּ֣ם מְבַקְשִׁ֑ים וַיְגָ֣רֶשׁ אֹתָ֔ם מֵאֵ֖ת פְּנֵ֥י פַרְעֹֽה:

10:12

Second Reading
God said to Moses, 'Extend your hand over Egypt [to bring] the locusts, and they will emerge on Egypt. They will eat all the foliage in the land that was spared by the hail.' 
Vayomer Adonay el-Moshe neteh yadecha al-erets Mitsrayim ba'arbeh veya'al al-erets Mitsrayim veyochal et-kol-esev ha'arets et kol-asher hish'ir habarad.

יבוַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶל־משֶׁ֗ה נְטֵ֨ה יָֽדְךָ֜ עַל־אֶ֤רֶץ מִצְרַ֨יִם֙ בָּֽאַרְבֶּ֔ה וְיַ֖עַל עַל־אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם וְיֹאכַל֙ אֶת־כָּל־עֵ֣שֶׂב הָאָ֔רֶץ אֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִשְׁאִ֖יר הַבָּרָֽד:

10:13

Moses raised his hand over Egypt, and all that day and night, God made an east wind blow over the land. When morning came, the east wind was carrying the locusts. 
Vayet Moshe et-matehu al-erets Mitsrayim v'Adonay nihag ruach-kadim ba'arets kol-hayom hahu vechol-halaylah haboker hayah veruach hakadim nasa et-ha'arbeh.

יגוַיֵּ֨ט משֶׁ֣ה אֶת־מַטֵּ֘הוּ֘ עַל־אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֒יִם֒ וַֽיהֹוָ֗ה נִהַ֤ג רֽוּחַ־קָדִים֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ כָּל־הַיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא וְכָל־הַלָּ֑יְלָה הַבֹּ֣קֶר הָיָ֔ה וְר֨וּחַ֙ הַקָּדִ֔ים נָשָׂ֖א אֶת־הָֽאַרְבֶּֽה:

10:14

The locusts invaded Egypt, settling on all Egyptian territory. It was a very severe [plague]. Never before had there been such a locust plague, and never again [would the like be seen]. 
Vaya'al ha'arbeh al kol-erets Mitsrayim vayanach bechol gvul Mitsrayim kaved me'od lefanav lo-hayah chen arbeh kamohu ve'acharav lo yihyeh-ken.

ידוַיַּ֣עַל הָֽאַרְבֶּ֗ה עַ֚ל כָּל־אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַיָּ֕נַח בְּכֹ֖ל גְּב֣וּל מִצְרָ֑יִם כָּבֵ֣ד מְאֹ֔ד לְ֠פָנָ֠יו לֹא־הָ֨יָה כֵ֤ן אַרְבֶּה֙ כָּמֹ֔הוּ וְאַֽחֲרָ֖יו לֹ֥א יִֽהְיֶה־כֵּֽן:

10:15

The [locusts] covered the entire surface of the land, making the ground black. They ate all the plants on the ground and all the fruit on the trees, whatever had been spared by the hail. Nothing green remained on the trees and plants throughout all Egypt. 
Vayechas et-eyn kol-ha'arets vatecheshach ha'arets vayochal et-kol-esev ha'arets ve'et kol-peri ha'ets asher hotir habarad velo-notar kol-yerek ba'ets uve'esev hasadeh bechol-erets Mitsrayim.

טווַיְכַ֞ס אֶת־עֵ֣ין כָּל־הָאָ֘רֶץ֘ וַתֶּחְשַׁ֣ךְ הָאָ֒רֶץ֒ וַיֹּ֜אכַל אֶת־כָּל־עֵ֣שֶׂב הָאָ֗רֶץ וְאֵת֙ כָּל־פְּרִ֣י הָעֵ֔ץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הוֹתִ֖יר הַבָּרָ֑ד וְלֹֽא־נוֹתַ֨ר כָּל־יֶ֧רֶק בָּעֵ֛ץ וּבְעֵ֥שֶׂב הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם:

10:16

Pharaoh hastily summoned Moses and Aaron. 'I have committed a crime,' he said, 'both to God your Lord and to you.
Vayemaher Par'oh likro le-Moshe ule-Aharon vayomer chatati l'Adonay Eloheychem velachem.

טזוַיְמַהֵ֣ר פַּרְעֹ֔ה לִקְרֹ֖א לְמשֶׁ֣ה וּלְאַֽהֲרֹ֑ן וַיֹּ֗אמֶר חָטָ֛אתִי לַֽיהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֖ם וְלָכֶֽם:

10:17

Now forgive my offense just this one more time. Pray to God your Lord! Just take this death away from me!' 
Ve'atah sa na chatati ach hapa'am vehatiru l'Adonay Eloheychem veyaser me'alay rak et-hamavet hazeh.

יזוְעַתָּ֗ה שָׂ֣א נָ֤א חַטָּאתִי֙ אַ֣ךְ הַפַּ֔עַם וְהַעְתִּ֖ירוּ לַֽיהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֑ם וְיָסֵר֙ מֵֽעָלַ֔י רַ֖ק אֶת־הַמָּ֥וֶת הַזֶּֽה:

10:18

[Moses] left Pharaoh's presence and prayed to God. 
Vayetse me'im Par'oh vayetar el-Adonay.

יחוַיֵּצֵ֖א מֵעִ֣ם פַּרְעֹ֑ה וַיֶּעְתַּ֖ר אֶל־יְהֹוָֽה:

10:19

God turned the wind around, [transforming it into] a very strong west wind. It carried away the locusts, and plunged them into the Red Sea. Not a single locust remained within all Egypt's borders. 
Vayahafoch Adonay ruach-yam chazak me'od vayisa et-ha'arbeh vayitka'ehu Yamah Suf lo nish'ar arbeh echad bechol gevul Mitsrayim.

יטוַיַּֽהֲפֹ֨ךְ יְהֹוָ֤ה רֽוּחַ־יָם֙ חָזָ֣ק מְאֹ֔ד וַיִּשָּׂא֙ אֶת־הָ֣אַרְבֶּ֔ה וַיִּתְקָעֵ֖הוּ יָ֣מָּה סּ֑וּף לֹ֤א נִשְׁאַר֙ אַרְבֶּ֣ה אֶחָ֔ד בְּכֹ֖ל גְּב֥וּל מִצְרָֽיִם:

10:20

But once again, God made Pharaoh obstinate, and he would not let the Israelites leave. 
Vayechazek Adonay et-lev Par'oh velo shilach et-beney Yisra'el.

כוַיְחַזֵּ֥ק יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־לֵ֣ב פַּרְעֹ֑ה וְלֹ֥א שִׁלַּ֖ח אֶת־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל:

10:21

God said to Moses, 'Reach out toward the sky with your hand, and there will be darkness in Egypt. The darkness will bepalpable.' 
Vayomer Adonay el-Moshe neteh yadecha al-hashamayim vyhi choshech al-erets Mitsrayim veyamesh choshech.

כאוַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶל־משֶׁ֗ה נְטֵ֤ה יָֽדְךָ֙ עַל־הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וִ֥יהִי ח֖שֶׁךְ עַל־אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם וְיָמֵ֖שׁ חֽשֶׁךְ:

10:22

Moses lifted his hand toward the sky, and there was an opaque darkness in all Egypt, lasting for three days. 
Vayet Moshe et-yado al-hashamayim vayehi choshech-afelah bechol-erets Mitsrayim shloshet yamim.

כבוַיֵּ֥ט משֶׁ֛ה אֶת־יָד֖וֹ עַל־הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וַיְהִ֧י חֽשֶׁךְ־אֲפֵלָ֛ה בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם שְׁל֥שֶׁת יָמִֽים:

10:23

People could not see each other, and no one left his place for three days. The Israelites, however, had light in the areas where they lived. 
Lo-ra'u ish et-achiv velo-kamu ish mitachtav shloshet yamim ulechol-beney Yisra'el hayah or bemoshevotam.

כגלֹֽא־רָא֞וּ אִ֣ישׁ אֶת־אָחִ֗יו וְלֹא־קָ֛מוּ אִ֥ישׁ מִתַּחְתָּ֖יו שְׁל֣שֶׁת יָמִ֑ים וּלְכָל־בְּנֵ֧י יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל הָ֥יָה א֖וֹר בְּמֽוֹשְׁבֹתָֽם:

10:24

Third Reading
Pharaoh summoned Moses. 'Go!' he said. 'Worship God! Even your children can go with you. Just leave your sheep and cattle behind.' 
Vayikra Far'oh el-Moshe vayomer lechu ivdu et-Adonay rak tsonchem uvekarchem yutsag gam-tapchem yelech imachem.

כדוַיִּקְרָ֨א פַרְעֹ֜ה אֶל־משֶׁ֗ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לְכוּ֙ עִבְד֣וּ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֔ה רַ֛ק צֹֽאנְכֶ֥ם וּבְקַרְכֶ֖ם יֻצָּ֑ג גַּם־טַפְּכֶ֖ם יֵלֵ֥ךְ עִמָּכֶֽם:

10:25

'Will you then provide us with sacrifices and burnt offerings so that we will be able to offer them to God our Lord?' replied Moses. 
Vayomer Moshe gam-atah titen beyadenu zvachim ve'olot ve'asinu l'Adonay Eloheynu.

כהוַיֹּ֣אמֶר משֶׁ֔ה גַּם־אַתָּ֛ה תִּתֵּ֥ן בְּיָדֵ֖נוּ זְבָחִ֣ים וְעֹלֹ֑ת וְעָשִׂ֖ינוּ לַֽיהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ:

10:26

'Our livestock must also go along with us. Not a single hoof can be left behind. We must take them to serve God our Lord, since we do not know what we will need to worship God until we get there.' 
Vegam-miknenu yelech imanu lo tisha'er parsah ki mimenu nikach la'avod et-Adonay Eloheynu va'anachu lo-neda mah-na'avod et-Adonay ad-bo'enu shamah.

כווְגַם־מִקְנֵ֜נוּ יֵלֵ֣ךְ עִמָּ֗נוּ לֹ֤א תִשָּׁאֵר֙ פַּרְסָ֔ה כִּ֚י מִמֶּ֣נּוּ נִקַּ֔ח לַֽעֲבֹ֖ד אֶת־יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ וַֽאֲנַ֣חְנוּ לֹֽא־נֵדַ֗ע מַה־נַּֽעֲבֹד֙ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֔ה עַד־בֹּאֵ֖נוּ שָֽׁמָּה:

10:27

God made Pharaoh obstinate, and he was no longer willing to let [the Israelites] leave. 
Vayechazek Adonay et-lev Par'oh velo avah leshalecham.

כזוַיְחַזֵּ֥ק יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־לֵ֣ב פַּרְעֹ֑ה וְלֹ֥א אָבָ֖ה לְשַׁלְּחָֽם:

10:28

'Leave my presence!' said Pharaoh to [Moses]. 'Don't dare see my face again! The day you appear before me, you will die!' 
Vayomer-lo Far'oh lech me'alay hishamer lecha al-tosef re'ot panay ki beyom re'otcha fanay tamut.

כחוַיֹּֽאמֶר־ל֥וֹ פַרְעֹ֖ה לֵ֣ךְ מֵֽעָלָ֑י הִשָּׁ֣מֶר לְךָ֗ אַל־תֹּ֨סֶף֙ רְא֣וֹת פָּנַ֔י כִּ֗י בְּי֛וֹם רְאֹֽתְךָ֥ פָנַ֖י תָּמֽוּת:

10:29

'As you say,' replied Moses. 'I will not see your face again.' 
Vayomer Moshe ken dibarta lo-osif od re'ot paneycha.

כטוַיֹּ֥אמֶר משֶׁ֖ה כֵּ֣ן דִּבַּ֑רְתָּ לֹֽא־אֹסִ֥ף ע֖וֹד רְא֥וֹת פָּנֶֽיךָ:
