Exodus - Chapter 8

8:1

God said to Moses, 'Tell Aaron to point the staff in his hand at the rivers, canals and reservoirs, and he will make frogs emerge upon Egypt.' 
Vayomer Adonay el-Moshe emor el-Aharon neteh et-yadcha bematecha al-haneharot al-haye'orim ve'al-ha'agamim veha'al et-hatsfarde'im al-erets Mitsrayim.

אוַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהֹוָה֘ אֶל־משֶׁה֒ אֱמֹ֣ר אֶל־אַֽהֲרֹ֗ן נְטֵ֤ה אֶת־יָֽדְךָ֙ בְּמַטֶּ֔ךָ עַל־הַ֙נְּהָרֹ֔ת עַל־הַיְאֹרִ֖ים וְעַל־הָֽאֲגַמִּ֑ים וְהַ֥עַל אֶת־הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֖ים עַל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם:

8:2

Aaron held his hand out over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs emerged, covering Egypt. 
Vayet Aharon et-yado al meymey Mitsrayim vata'al hatsfardea vatechas et-erets Mitsrayim.

בוַיֵּ֤ט אַֽהֲרֹן֙ אֶת־יָד֔וֹ עַ֖ל מֵימֵ֣י מִצְרָ֑יִם וַתַּ֨עַל֙ הַצּפַרְדֵּ֔עַ וַתְּכַ֖ס אֶת־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם:

8:3

The master symbolists were able to produce the same effect with their hidden arts, making frogs emerge on Egyptian land. 
Vaya'asu-chen hachartumim belateyhem vaya'alu et-hatsfarde'im al-erets Mitsrayim.

גוַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־כֵ֥ן הַֽחַרְטֻמִּ֖ים בְּלָֽטֵיהֶ֑ם וַיַּֽעֲל֥וּ אֶת־הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֖ים עַל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם:

8:4

Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron, and said, 'Pray to God! Let Him get the frogs away from me and my people. I will let the people leave and sacrifice to God.' 
Vayikra Far'oh le-Moshe ule-Aharon vayomer hatiru el-Adonay veyaser hatsfarde'im mimeni ume'ami va'ashalechah et-ha'am veyizbechu la'Adonay.

דוַיִּקְרָ֨א פַרְעֹ֜ה לְמשֶׁ֣ה וּלְאַֽהֲרֹ֗ן וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ הַעְתִּ֣ירוּ אֶל־יְהֹוָ֔ה וְיָסֵר֙ הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֔ים מִמֶּ֖נִּי וּמֵֽעַמִּ֑י וַֽאֲשַׁלְּחָה֙ אֶת־הָעָ֔ם וְיִזְבְּח֖וּ לַֽיהֹוָֽה:

8:5

'Try and test me,' replied Moses. 'Exactly when shall I pray for you, your officials and your people? The frogs will [immediately] depart from you and your homes, remaining only in the Nile.' 
Vayomer Moshe le-Far'oh hitpa'er alay lematay atir lecha vela'avadeycha ule'amecha lehachrit hatsfarde'im mimecha umibateycha rak baYe'or tisha'arnah.

הוַיֹּ֨אמֶר משֶׁ֣ה לְפַרְעֹה֘ הִתְפָּאֵ֣ר עָלַי֒ לְמָתַ֣י | אַעְתִּ֣יר לְךָ֗ וְלַֽעֲבָדֶ֨יךָ֙ וּלְעַמְּךָ֔ לְהַכְרִית֙ הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֔ים מִמְּךָ֖ וּמִבָּתֶּ֑יךָ רַ֥ק בַּיְאֹ֖ר תִּשָּׁאַֽרְנָה:

8:6

'Tomorrow!' said [Pharaoh].

'As you say,' replied [Moses]. 'You will then know that there is none like God our Lord. 
Vayomer lemachar vayomer kidvareycha lema'an teda ki-eyn k'Adonay Eloheynu.

ווַיֹּ֖אמֶר לְמָחָ֑ר וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ כִּדְבָ֣רְךָ֔ לְמַ֣עַן תֵּדַ֔ע כִּי־אֵ֖ין כַּֽיהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ:

8:7

Fifth Reading
The frogs will depart from you, as well as from your houses, your officials and your people. They will remain only in the Nile.' 
Vesaru hatsfarde'im mimecha umibateycha ume'avadeycha ume'amecha rak baYe'or tisha'arnah.

זוְסָר֣וּ הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֗ים מִמְּךָ֙ וּמִבָּ֣תֶּ֔יךָ וּמֵֽעֲבָדֶ֖יךָ וּמֵֽעַמֶּ֑ךָ רַ֥ק בַּיְאֹ֖ר תִּשָּׁאַֽרְנָה:

8:8

Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh, and Moses cried out to God concerning the frogs that He had brought upon Pharaoh. 
Vayetse Moshe ve'Aharon me'im Par'oh vayits'ak Moshe el-Adonay al-devar hatsfarde'im asher-sam le-Far'oh.

חוַיֵּצֵ֥א משֶׁ֛ה וְאַֽהֲרֹ֖ן מֵעִ֣ם פַּרְעֹ֑ה וַיִּצְעַ֤ק משֶׁה֙ אֶל־יְהֹוָ֔ה עַל־דְּבַ֥ר הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֖ים אֲשֶׁר־שָׂ֥ם לְפַרְעֹֽה:

8:9

God did just as Moses said, and the frogs in the houses, courtyards and fields died. 
Vaya'as Adonay kidevar Moshe vayamutu hatsfarde'im min-habatim min-hachatserot umin-hasadot.

טוַיַּ֥עַשׂ יְהֹוָ֖ה כִּדְבַ֣ר משֶׁ֑ה וַיָּמֻ֨תוּ֙ הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִ֔ים מִן־הַבָּתִּ֥ים מִן־הַֽחֲצֵרֹ֖ת וּמִן־הַשָּׂדֹֽת:

8:10

[The Egyptians] gathered them into great heaps, and the land stank. 
Vayitsberu otam chamarim chamarim vativ'ash ha'arets.

יוַיִּצְבְּר֥וּ אֹתָ֖ם חֳמָרִ֣ם חֳמָרִ֑ם וַתִּבְאַ֖שׁ הָאָֽרֶץ:

8:11

When Pharaoh saw that there had been a respite, he hardened his heart and would not listen to them, just as God had predicted. 
Vayar Par'oh ki hayetah harevachah vehachbed et-libo velo shama alehem ka'asher diber Adonay.

יאוַיַּ֣רְא פַּרְעֹ֗ה כִּ֤י הָֽיְתָה֙ הָֽרְוָחָ֔ה וְהַכְבֵּד֙ אֶת־לִבּ֔וֹ וְלֹ֥א שָׁמַ֖ע אֲלֵהֶ֑ם כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהֹוָֽה:

8:12

God said to Moses, 'Tell Aaron to hold out his staff and strike the dust of the earth. It will turn into lice all over Egypt.' 
Vayomer Adonay el-Moshe emor el-Aharon neteh et-matcha vehach et-afar ha'arets vehayah lechinim bechol erets Mitsrayim.

יבוַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהֹוָה֘ אֶל־משֶׁה֒ אֱמֹר֙ אֶל־אַֽהֲרֹ֔ן נְטֵ֣ה אֶת־מַטְּךָ֔ וְהַ֖ךְ אֶת־עֲפַ֣ר הָאָ֑רֶץ וְהָיָ֥ה לְכִנִּ֖ם בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם:

8:13

They did this. Aaron held out his hand with his staff, and struck the dust of the earth. The lice appeared, attacking man and beast. Throughout all Egypt, the dust had turned into lice. 
Vaya'asu-chen vayet Aharon et-yado vematehu vayach et-afar ha'arets vatehi hakinam ba'adam uvabehemah kol-afar ha'arets hayah chinim bechol-erets Mitsrayim.

יגוַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־כֵ֗ן וַיֵּט֩ אַֽהֲרֹ֨ן אֶת־יָד֤וֹ בְמַטֵּ֨הוּ֙ וַיַּךְ֙ אֶת־עֲפַ֣ר הָאָ֔רֶץ וַתְּהִי֙ הַכִּנָּ֔ם בָּֽאָדָ֖ם וּבַבְּהֵמָ֑ה כָּל־עֲפַ֥ר הָאָ֛רֶץ הָיָ֥ה כִנִּ֖ים בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם:

8:14

The master symbolists tried to produce lice with their hidden arts, but they could not. [Meanwhile], the lice were attacking man and beast alike. 
Vaya'asu-chen hachartumim belateyhem lehotsi et-hakinim velo yacholu vatehi hakinam ba'adam uvabehemah.

ידוַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־כֵ֨ן הַֽחַרְטֻמִּ֧ים בְּלָֽטֵיהֶ֛ם לְהוֹצִ֥יא אֶת־הַכִּנִּ֖ים וְלֹ֣א יָכֹ֑לוּ וַתְּהִי֙ הַכִּנָּ֔ם בָּֽאָדָ֖ם וּבַבְּהֵמָֽה:

8:15

'It is the finger of God,' said the master symbolists to Pharaoh. But Pharaoh remained obstinate and would not listen, just as God had predicted. 
Vayomeru hachartumim el-Par'oh etsba Elohim hi vayechezak lev-Par'oh velo-shama alehem ka'asher diber Adonay.

טווַיֹּֽאמְר֤וּ הַֽחַרְטֻמִּם֙ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֔ה אֶצְבַּ֥ע אֱלֹהִ֖ים הִ֑וא וַיֶּֽחֱזַ֤ק לֵֽב־פַּרְעֹה֙ וְלֹא־שָׁמַ֣ע אֲלֵהֶ֔ם כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהֹוָֽה:

8:16

God said to Moses, 'Get up early in the morning, and confront Pharaoh when he goes out to the water. Say to him in My name, 'Let My people leave and serve Me. 
Vayomer Adonay el-Moshe hashkem baboker vehityatsev lifney Far'oh hineh yotse hamaymah ve'amarta elav koh amar Adonay shalach ami veya'avduni.

טזוַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶל־משֶׁ֗ה הַשְׁכֵּ֤ם בַּבֹּ֨קֶר֙ וְהִתְיַצֵּב֙ לִפְנֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֔ה הִנֵּ֖ה יוֹצֵ֣א הַמָּ֑יְמָה וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה שַׁלַּ֥ח עַמִּ֖י וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי:

8:17

If you do not let My people leave, I will send swarms of harmful creatures [to attack] you, your officials, your people, and your homes. The houses of Egypt, and even the ground upon which they stand, will be filled with these creatures. 
Ki im-eynecha meshale'ach et-ami hineni mashli'ach becha uva'avadeycha uve'amcha uvevateycha et-he'arov umale'u batey Mitsrayim et-he'arov vegam ha'adamah asher-hem aleyha.

יזכִּ֣י אִם־אֵֽינְךָ֘ מְשַׁלֵּ֣חַ אֶת־עַמִּי֒ הִנְנִי֩ מַשְׁלִ֨יחַ בְּךָ֜ וּבַֽעֲבָדֶ֧יךָ וּבְעַמְּךָ֛ וּבְבָתֶּ֖יךָ אֶת־הֶֽעָרֹ֑ב וּמָ֨לְא֜וּ בָּתֵּ֤י מִצְרַ֨יִם֙ אֶת־הֶ֣עָרֹ֔ב וְגַ֥ם הָֽאֲדָמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁר־הֵ֥ם עָלֶֽיהָ:

8:18

'On that day, I will miraculously set apart the Goshen area, where My people remain, so that there will not be any harmful creatures there. You will then realize that I am God, right here on earth. 
Vehifleyti vayom hahu et-erets Goshen asher ami omed aleyha levilti heyot-sham arov lema'an teda ki ani Adonay bekerev ha'arets.

יחוְהִפְלֵיתִי֩ בַיּ֨וֹם הַה֜וּא אֶת־אֶ֣רֶץ גּ֗שֶׁן אֲשֶׁ֤ר עַמִּי֙ עֹמֵ֣ד עָלֶ֔יהָ לְבִלְתִּ֥י הֱיֽוֹת־שָׁ֖ם עָרֹ֑ב לְמַ֣עַן תֵּדַ֔ע כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה בְּקֶ֥רֶב הָאָֽרֶץ:

8:19

Sixth Reading
I will therefore make a distinction between My people and your people. This miraculous sign will take place tomorrow.' ' 
Vesamti fedut beyn ami uveyn amecha lemachar yihyeh ha'ot hazeh.

יטוְשַׂמְתִּ֣י פְדֻ֔ת בֵּ֥ין עַמִּ֖י וּבֵ֣ין עַמֶּ֑ךָ לְמָחָ֥ר יִֽהְיֶ֖ה הָאֹ֥ת הַזֶּֽה:

8:20

God did this, and huge throngs of creatures attacked the palaces of Pharaoh and his officials. Throughout all Egypt, the land was devastated by the creatures. 
Vaya'as Adonay ken vayavo arov kaved beytah Far'oh uveyt avadav uvechol-erets Mitsrayim tishachet ha'arets mipeney he'arov.

כוַיַּ֤עַשׂ יְהֹוָה֙ כֵּ֔ן וַיָּבֹא֙ עָרֹ֣ב כָּבֵ֔ד בֵּ֥יתָה פַרְעֹ֖ה וּבֵ֣ית עֲבָדָ֑יו וּבְכָל־אֶ֧רֶץ מִצְרַ֛יִם תִּשָּׁחֵ֥ת הָאָ֖רֶץ מִפְּנֵ֥י הֶעָרֹֽב:

8:21

Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron. 'Go!' he said. '[You have permission to] sacrifice to your God here in [our] land.' 
Vayikra Far'oh el-Moshe ule-Aharon vayomer lechu zivechu le-Eloheychem ba'arets.

כאוַיִּקְרָ֣א פַרְעֹ֔ה אֶל־משֶׁ֖ה וּלְאַֽהֲרֹ֑ן וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לְכ֛וּ זִבְח֥וּ לֵאלֹֽהֵיכֶ֖ם בָּאָֽרֶץ:

8:22

'That would hardly be suitable,' replied Moses. 'What we will sacrifice to God our Lord is sacred to the Egyptians. Could we sacrifice the sacred animal of the Egyptians before their very eyes and not have them stone us? 
Vayomer Moshe lo nachon la'asot ken ki to'avat Mitsrayim nizbach l'Adonay Eloheynu hen nizbach et-to'avat Mitsrayim le'eyneyhem velo yiskelunu.

כבוַיֹּ֣אמֶר משֶׁ֗ה לֹ֤א נָכוֹן֙ לַֽעֲשׂ֣וֹת כֵּ֔ן כִּ֚י תּֽוֹעֲבַ֣ת מִצְרַ֔יִם נִזְבַּ֖ח לַֽיהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ הֵ֣ן נִזְבַּ֞ח אֶת־תּֽוֹעֲבַ֥ת מִצְרַ֛יִם לְעֵֽינֵיהֶ֖ם וְלֹ֥א יִסְקְלֻֽנוּ:

8:23

What we must do is make a three day journey into the desert. There we will be able to sacrifice to God our Lord, just as He told us.' 
Derech shloshet yamim nelech bamidbar vezavachnu l'Adonay Eloheynu ka'asher yomar eleynu.

כגדֶּ֚רֶךְ שְׁל֣שֶׁת יָמִ֔ים נֵלֵ֖ךְ בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וְזָבַ֨חְנוּ֙ לַֽיהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר יֹאמַ֥ר אֵלֵֽינוּ:

8:24

'I will let you leave,' said Pharaoh, 'as long as you do not go too far away. You can sacrifice to God your Lord in the desert. But pray for me!' 
Vayomer Par'oh anochi ashalach etchem uzevachtem l'Adonay Eloheychem bamidbar rak harchek lo-tarchiku lalechet hatiru ba'adi.

כדוַיֹּ֣אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֗ה אָֽנֹכִ֞י אֲשַׁלַּ֤ח אֶתְכֶם֙ וּזְבַחְתֶּ֞ם לַֽיהֹוָ֤ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶם֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר רַ֛ק הַרְחֵ֥ק לֹֽא־תַרְחִ֖יקוּ לָלֶ֑כֶת הַעְתִּ֖ירוּ בַּֽעֲדִֽי:

8:25

Moses answered, 'When I leave your presence, I will pray to God. Tomorrow, the creatures will go away from Pharaoh, his servants, and his people. But let Pharaoh never again deceive us, refusing to let the people sacrifice to God.' 
Vayomer Moshe hineh anochi yotse me'imach vehatarti el-Adonay vesar he'arov miPar'oh me'avadav ume'amo machar rak al-yosef Par'oh hatel levilti shalachet-ha'am lizboach l'Adonay.

כהוַיֹּ֣אמֶר משֶׁ֗ה הִנֵּ֨ה אָֽנֹכִ֜י יוֹצֵ֤א מֵֽעִמָּךְ֙ וְהַעְתַּרְתִּ֣י אֶל־יְהֹוָ֔ה וְסָ֣ר הֶֽעָרֹ֗ב מִפַּרְעֹ֛ה מֵֽעֲבָדָ֥יו וּמֵֽעַמּ֖וֹ מָחָ֑ר רַ֗ק אַל־יֹסֵ֤ף פַּרְעֹה֙ הָתֵ֔ל לְבִלְתִּי֙ שַׁלַּ֣ח אֶת־הָעָ֔ם לִזְבֹּ֖חַ לַֽיהֹוָֽה:

8:26

Moses left Pharaoh's presence and prayed to God. 
Vayetse Moshe me'im Par'oh vayetar el-Adonay.

כווַיֵּצֵ֥א משֶׁ֖ה מֵעִ֣ם פַּרְעֹ֑ה וַיֶּעְתַּ֖ר אֶל־יְהֹוָֽה:

8:27

Doing as Moses requested, God caused the creatures to leave Pharaoh, his servants and his people. Not a single one remained. 
Vaya'as Adonay kidvar Moshe vayasar he'arov miPar'oh me'avadav ume'amo lo nish'ar echad.

כזוַיַּ֤עַשׂ יְהֹוָה֙ כִּדְבַ֣ר משֶׁ֔ה וַיָּ֨סַר֙ הֶֽעָרֹ֔ב מִפַּרְעֹ֖ה מֵֽעֲבָדָ֣יו וּמֵֽעַמּ֑וֹ לֹ֥א נִשְׁאַ֖ר אֶחָֽד:

8:28

But this time again, Pharaoh made himself obstinate, and he would not let the people leave. 
Vayachbed Par'oh et-libo gam bapa'am hazot velo shilach et-ha'am.

כחוַיַּכְבֵּ֤ד פַּרְעֹה֙ אֶת־לִבּ֔וֹ גַּ֖ם בַּפַּ֣עַם הַזֹּ֑את וְלֹ֥א שִׁלַּ֖ח אֶת־הָעָֽם:
