Exodus - Chapter 9

9:1

God told Moses to go to Pharaoh, and in the name of God, Lord of the Hebrews, say to him, 'Let My people leave and serve Me. 
Vayomer Adonay el-Moshe bo el-Par'oh vedibarta elav koh amar Adonay Elohey ha'Ivrim shalach et-ami veya'avduni.

אוַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־משֶׁ֔ה בֹּ֖א אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֑ה וְדִבַּרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּֽה־אָמַ֤ר יְהֹוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י הָֽעִבְרִ֔ים שַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־עַמִּ֖י וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי:

9:2

For if you refuse to let them leave, and continue holding them, 
Ki im-ma'en atah leshale'ach ve'odecha machazik bam.

בכִּ֛י אִם־מָאֵ֥ן אַתָּ֖ה לְשַׁלֵּ֑חַ וְעֽוֹדְךָ֖ מַֽחֲזִ֥יק בָּֽם:

9:3

God's power will be directed against your livestock in the field. The horses, donkeys, camels, cattle and sheep [will die from] a very serious epidemic. 
Hineh yad Adonay hoyah bemiknecha asher basadeh basusim bachamorim bagmalim babakar uvatson dever kaved me'od.

גהִנֵּ֨ה יַד־יְהֹוָ֜ה הוֹיָ֗ה בְּמִקְנְךָ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה בַּסּוּסִ֤ים בַּֽחֲמֹרִים֙ בַּגְּמַלִּ֔ים בַּבָּקָ֖ר וּבַצֹּ֑אן דֶּ֖בֶר כָּבֵ֥ד מְאֹֽד:

9:4

'God will [again] make a miraculous distinction, [this time] between Israel's livestock and that of Egypt. Not a single [animal] belonging to the Israelites will die. 
Vehiflah Adonay beyn mikneh Yisra'el uveyn mikneh Mitsrayim velo yamut mikol-livney Yisra'el davar.

דוְהִפְלָ֣ה יְהֹוָ֔ה בֵּ֚ין מִקְנֵ֣ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וּבֵ֖ין מִקְנֵ֣ה מִצְרָ֑יִם וְלֹ֥א יָמ֛וּת מִכָּל־לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל דָּבָֽר:

9:5

God has set a fixed time, and has announced that He will strike the land with this tomorrow.' 
Vayasem Adonay mo'ed lemor machar ya'aseh Adonay hadavar hazeh ba'arets.

הוַיָּ֥שֶׂם יְהֹוָ֖ה מוֹעֵ֣ד לֵאמֹ֑ר מָחָ֗ר יַֽעֲשֶׂ֧ה יְהֹוָ֛ה הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּ֖ה בָּאָֽרֶץ:

9:6

On the next day, God did this, and all the livestock in Egypt died. Of the Israelites' livestock, however, not a single one was affected. 
Vaya'as Adonay et-hadavar hazeh mimochorat vayamot kol mikneh Mitsrayim umimikneh veney-Yisra'el lo-met echad.

ווַיַּ֨עַשׂ יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶת־הַדָּבָ֤ר הַזֶּה֙ מִמָּ֣חֳרָ֔ת וַיָּ֕מָת כֹּ֖ל מִקְנֵ֣ה מִצְרָ֑יִם וּמִמִּקְנֵ֥ה בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֹא־מֵ֥ת אֶחָֽד:

9:7

Pharaoh sent word and discovered that among the Israelites' livestock, not a single [animal] had died. But Pharaoh remained obstinate and would not let the people leave. 
Vayishlach Par'oh vehineh lo-met mimikneh Yisra'el ad-echad vayichbad lev Par'oh velo shilach et-ha'am.

זוַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח פַּרְעֹ֔ה וְהִנֵּ֗ה לֹא־מֵ֛ת מִמִּקְנֵ֥ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עַד־אֶחָ֑ד וַיִּכְבַּד֙ לֵ֣ב פַּרְעֹ֔ה וְלֹ֥א שִׁלַּ֖ח אֶת־הָעָֽם:

9:8

God said to Moses and Aaron, 'Take a handful of furnace soot and throw it up in the air before Pharaoh's eyes. 
Vayomer Adonay el-Moshe ve'el-Aharon kechu lachem melo chofneychem piach kivshan uzrako Moshe hashamaymah le'eyney Far'oh.

חוַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהֹוָה֘ אֶל־משֶׁ֣ה וְאֶל־אַֽהֲרֹן֒ קְח֤וּ לָכֶם֙ מְלֹ֣א חָפְנֵיכֶ֔ם פִּ֖יחַ כִּבְשָׁ֑ן וּזְרָק֥וֹ משֶׁ֛ה הַשָּׁמַ֖יְמָה לְעֵינֵ֥י פַרְעֹֽה:

9:9

It will settle as dust on all Egypt, and when it falls on man or beast anywhere in Egypt, it will cause a rash breaking out into boils.' 
Vehayah le'avak al kol-erets Mitsrayim vehayah al-ha'adam ve'al-habehemah lishchin pore'ach avabu'ot bechol-erets Mitsrayim.

טוְהָיָ֣ה לְאָבָ֔ק עַ֖ל כָּל־אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם וְהָיָ֨ה עַל־הָֽאָדָ֜ם וְעַל־הַבְּהֵמָ֗ה לִשְׁחִ֥ין פֹּרֵ֛חַ אֲבַעְבֻּעֹ֖ת בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם:

9:10

They took the furnace soot and stood before Pharaoh. Moses threw it up in the air, and it caused a rash, which broke into boils, in man and beasts. 
Vayikchu et-piach hakivshan vaya'amdu lifney Far'oh vayizrok oto Moshe hashamaymah vayehi shchin avabu'ot pore'ach ba'adam uvabehemah.

יוַיִּקְח֞וּ אֶת־פִּ֣יחַ הַכִּבְשָׁ֗ן וַיַּֽעַמְדוּ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֔ה וַיִּזְרֹ֥ק אֹת֛וֹ משֶׁ֖ה הַשָּׁמָ֑יְמָה וַיְהִ֗י שְׁחִין֙ אֲבַעְבֻּעֹ֔ת פֹּרֵ֕חַ בָּֽאָדָ֖ם וּבַבְּהֵמָֽה:

9:11

The master symbolists could not stand before Moses as a result of the rash, since the rash had attacked the symbolists [along with] the rest of Egypt. 
Velo yachlu hachartumim la'amod lifney Moshe mipney hashchin ki-hayah hashchin bachartumim uvechol-Mitsrayim.

יאוְלֹא־יָֽכְל֣וּ הַֽחַרְטֻמִּ֗ים לַֽעֲמֹ֛ד לִפְנֵ֥י משֶׁ֖ה מִפְּנֵ֣י הַשְּׁחִ֑ין כִּֽי־הָיָ֣ה הַשְּׁחִ֔ין בַּֽחַרְטֻמִּ֖ם וּבְכָל־מִצְרָֽיִם:

9:12

[Now it was] God who made Pharaoh obstinate. He did not listen to [Moses and Aaron], just as God had predicted. 
Vayechazek Adonay et-lev Par'oh velo shama alehem ka'asher diber Adonay el-Moshe.

יבוַיְחַזֵּ֤ק יְהֹוָה֙ אֶת־לֵ֣ב פַּרְעֹ֔ה וְלֹ֥א שָׁמַ֖ע אֲלֵהֶ֑ם כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶל־משֶֽׁה:

9:13

God told Moses to get up early in the morning and confront Pharaoh, saying to him in the name of God, Lord of the Hebrews, 'Let My people leave and serve Me. 
Vayomer Adonay el-Moshe hashkem baboker vehityatsev lifney Far'oh ve'amarta elav koh-amar Adonay Elohey ha'Ivrim shalach et-ami veya'avduni.

יגוַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־משֶׁ֔ה הַשְׁכֵּ֣ם בַּבֹּ֔קֶר וְהִתְיַצֵּ֖ב לִפְנֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֑ה וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּֽה־אָמַ֤ר יְהֹוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י הָֽעִבְרִ֔ים שַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־עַמִּ֖י וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי:

9:14

This time, I am prepared to send all My catastrophes against your very heart. [They will strike] your officials and your people, so that you will know that there is none like Me in all the world. 
Ki bapa'am hazot ani shole'ach et-kol-magefotay el-libcha uva'avadeycha uve'amecha ba'avur teda ki eyn kamoni bechol-ha'arets.

ידכִּ֣י | בַּפַּ֣עַם הַזֹּ֗את אֲנִ֨י שֹׁלֵ֜חַ אֶת־כָּל־מַגֵּֽפֹתַי֙ אֶל־לִבְּ֔ךָ וּבַֽעֲבָדֶ֖יךָ וּבְעַמֶּ֑ךָ בַּֽעֲב֣וּר תֵּדַ֔ע כִּ֛י אֵ֥ין כָּמֹ֖נִי בְּכָל־הָאָֽרֶץ:

9:15

'I could have unleashed My power, killing you and your people with the epidemic [sent against the animals], and you would have been obliterated from the world. 
Ki atah shalachti et-yadi va'ach otecha ve'et-amecha badaver vatikached min-ha'arets.

טוכִּ֤י עַתָּה֙ שָׁלַ֣חְתִּי אֶת־יָדִ֔י וָאַ֥ךְ אֽוֹתְךָ֛ וְאֶת־עַמְּךָ֖ בַּדָּ֑בֶר וַתִּכָּחֵ֖ד מִן־הָאָֽרֶץ:

9:16

The only reason I let you survive was to show you My strength, so that My name will be discussed all over the world. 
Ve'ulam ba'avur zot he'emadeticha ba'avur har'otecha et-kochi ulema'an saper shemi bechol-ha'arets.

טזוְאוּלָ֗ם בַּֽעֲב֥וּר זֹאת֙ הֶֽעֱמַדְתִּ֔יךָ בַּֽעֲב֖וּר הַרְאֹֽתְךָ֣ אֶת־כֹּחִ֑י וּלְמַ֛עַן סַפֵּ֥ר שְׁמִ֖י בְּכָל־הָאָֽרֶץ:

9:17

Seventh Reading
'But now you are still lording it over My people, refusing to let them leave. 
Odecha mistolel be'ami levilti shalecham.

יזעֽוֹדְךָ֖ מִסְתּוֹלֵ֣ל בְּעַמִּ֑י לְבִלְתִּ֖י שַׁלְּחָֽם:

9:18

At this time tomorrow, I will bring a very heavy hail. Never before in Egypt, since the day it was founded, has there been anything like it. 
Hineni mamtir ka'et machar barad kaved me'od asher lo-hayah chamohu beMitsrayim lemin-hayom hivasdah ve'ad-atah.

יחהִנְנִ֤י מַמְטִיר֙ כָּעֵ֣ת מָחָ֔ר בָּרָ֖ד כָּבֵ֣ד מְאֹ֑ד אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹֽא־הָיָ֤ה כָמֹ֨הוּ֙ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם לְמִן־הַיּ֥וֹם הִוָּֽסְדָ֖ה וְעַד־עָֽתָּה:

9:19

'Now send word and make arrangements to shelter your livestock and everything else you have in the field. Any man or beast who remains in the field, and does not come indoors, will be pelted by the hail and will die.' 
Ve'atah shlach ha'ez et-miknecha ve'et kol-asher lecha basadeh kol-ha'adam vehabehemah asher-yimatse vasadeh velo ye'asef habaytah veyarad alehem habarad vametu.

יטוְעַתָּ֗ה שְׁלַ֤ח הָעֵז֙ אֶת־מִקְנְךָ֔ וְאֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְךָ֖ בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה כָּל־הָֽאָדָ֨ם וְהַבְּהֵמָ֜ה אֲשֶׁר־יִמָּצֵ֣א בַשָּׂדֶ֗ה וְלֹ֤א יֵֽאָסֵף֙ הַבַּ֔יְתָה וְיָרַ֧ד עֲלֵהֶ֛ם הַבָּרָ֖ד וָמֵֽתוּ:

9:20

Some of Pharaoh's subjects feared God's word, and they made their slaves and livestock flee indoors. 
Hayare et-dvar Adonay me'avdey Par'oh henis et-avadav ve'et-miknehu el-habatim.

כהַיָּרֵא֙ אֶת־דְּבַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה מֵֽעַבְדֵ֖י פַּרְעֹ֑ה הֵנִ֛יס אֶת־עֲבָדָ֥יו וְאֶת־מִקְנֵ֖הוּ אֶל־הַבָּתִּֽים:

9:21

But those who did not fear God's word left their slaves and livestock in the field. 
Va'asher lo-sam libo el-dvar Adonay vaya'azov et-avadav ve'et-miknehu basadeh.

כאוַֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־שָׂ֛ם לִבּ֖וֹ אֶל־דְּבַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֑ה וַיַּֽעֲזֹ֛ב אֶת־עֲבָדָ֥יו וְאֶת־מִקְנֵ֖הוּ בַּשָּׂדֶֽה:

9:22

God said to Moses, 'Stretch out your had toward the sky, and there will be hail throughout all Egypt. [It will fall] on man and beast, and on all outdoor plants all over Egypt. 
Vayomer Adonay el-Moshe neteh et-yadcha al-hashamayim vyhi varad bechol-erets Mitsrayim al-ha'adam ve'al-habehemah ve'al kol-esev hasadeh be'erets Mitsrayim.

כבוַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶל־משֶׁ֗ה נְטֵ֤ה אֶת־יָֽדְךָ֙ עַל־הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וִיהִ֥י בָרָ֖ד בְּכָל־אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם עַל־הָֽאָדָ֣ם וְעַל־הַבְּהֵמָ֗ה וְעַ֛ל כָּל־עֵ֥שֶׂב הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם:

9:23

Moses pointed his staff at the sky, and God caused it to thunder and hail, with lightning striking the ground. God then made it hail on the land of Egypt. 
Vayet Moshe et-matehu al-hashamayim va'Adonay natan kolot uvarad vatihalach-esh artsah vayamter Adonay barad al-erets Mitsrayim.

כגוַיֵּ֨ט משֶׁ֣ה אֶת־מַטֵּ֘הוּ֘ עַל־הַשָּׁמַ֒יִם֒ וַֽיהֹוָ֗ה נָתַ֤ן קֹלֹת֙ וּבָרָ֔ד וַתִּֽהֲלַךְ־אֵ֖שׁ אָ֑רְצָה וַיַּמְטֵ֧ר יְהֹוָ֛ה בָּרָ֖ד עַל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם:

9:24

There was hail, with lightning flashing among the hailstones. It was extremely heavy, unlike anything Egypt had experienced since it became a nation. 
Vayehi varad ve'esh mitlakachat betoch habarad kaved me'od asher lo-hayah chamohu bechol-erets Mitsrayim me'az hayetah legoy.

כדוַיְהִ֣י בָרָ֔ד וְאֵ֕שׁ מִתְלַקַּ֖חַת בְּת֣וֹךְ הַבָּרָ֑ד כָּבֵ֣ד מְאֹ֔ד אֲ֠שֶׁ֠ר לֹֽא־הָיָ֤ה כָמֹ֨הוּ֙ בְּכָל־אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם מֵאָ֖ז הָֽיְתָ֥ה לְגֽוֹי:

9:25

Throughout all Egypt, the hail killed every man and animal who was outdoors. The hail destroyed all the outdoor plants, and smashed every tree in the fields. 
Vayach habarad bechol-erets Mitsrayim et kol-asher basadeh me'adam ve'ad-behemah ve'et kol-esev hasadeh hikah habarad ve'et-kol-ets hasadeh shiber.

כהוַיַּ֨ךְ הַבָּרָ֜ד בְּכָל־אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֗יִם אֵ֚ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה מֵֽאָדָ֖ם וְעַד־בְּהֵמָ֑ה וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־עֵ֤שֶׂב הַשָּׂדֶה֙ הִכָּ֣ה הַבָּרָ֔ד וְאֶת־כָּל־עֵ֥ץ הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה שִׁבֵּֽר:

9:26

Only in Goshen, where the Israelites lived, there was no hail. 
Rak be'erets Goshen asher-sham beney Yisra'el lo hayah barad.

כורַ֚ק בְּאֶ֣רֶץ גּ֔שֶׁן אֲשֶׁר־שָׁ֖ם בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לֹ֥א הָיָ֖ה בָּרָֽד:

9:27

Pharaoh sent word and summoned Moses and Aaron. He said to them, 'This time I am guilty! God is Just! It is I and my people who are in the wrong! 
Vayishlach Par'oh vayikra le-Moshe ule-Aharon vayomer alehem chatati hapa'am Adonay hatsadik va'ani ve'ami haresha'im.

כזוַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח פַּרְעֹ֗ה וַיִּקְרָא֙ לְמשֶׁ֣ה וּלְאַֽהֲרֹ֔ן וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֖ם חָטָ֣אתִי הַפָּ֑עַם יְהֹוָה֙ הַצַּדִּ֔יק וַֽאֲנִ֥י וְעַמִּ֖י הָֽרְשָׁעִֽים:

9:28

Pray to God. There has been enough of this supernaturalthunder and hail. I will let you leave. You will not be delayed again.' 
Hatiru el-Adonay verav miheyot kolot Elohim uvarad va'ashalechah etchem velo tosifun la'amod.

כחהַעְתִּ֨ירוּ֙ אֶל־יְהֹוָ֔ה וְרַ֕ב מִֽהְיֹ֛ת קֹלֹ֥ת אֱלֹהִ֖ים וּבָרָ֑ד וַֽאֲשַׁלְּחָ֣ה אֶתְכֶ֔ם וְלֹ֥א תֹֽסִפ֖וּן לַֽעֲמֹֽד:

9:29

Moses said to him, 'When I go out of the city, I will spread my hands [in prayer] to God. The thunder will then stop, and there will not be any more hail. You will then know that the whole world belongs to God. 
Vayomer elav Moshe ketseti et-ha'ir efros et-kapay el-Adonay hakolot yechdalun vehabarad lo yihyeh-od lema'an teda ki l'Adonay ha'arets.

כטוַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ משֶׁ֔ה כְּצֵאתִי֙ אֶת־הָעִ֔יר אֶפְרֹ֥שׂ אֶת־כַּפַּ֖י אֶל־יְהֹוָ֑ה הַקֹּל֣וֹת יֶחְדָּל֗וּן וְהַבָּרָד֙ לֹ֣א יִֽהְיֶה־ע֔וֹד לְמַ֣עַן תֵּדַ֔ע כִּ֥י לַֽיהֹוָ֖ה הָאָֽרֶץ:

9:30

'I realize that you and your subjects still do not fear God. 
Ve'atah va'avadeycha yadati ki terem tir'un mipeney Adonay Elohim.

לוְאַתָּ֖ה וַֽעֲבָדֶ֑יךָ יָדַ֕עְתִּי כִּ֚י טֶ֣רֶם תִּֽירְא֔וּן מִפְּנֵ֖י יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהִֽים:

9:31

The flax and barley have been destroyed, since the barley was ripe, and the flax had formed stalks. 
Vehapishtah vehase'orah nukatah ki hase'orah aviv vehapishtah giv'ol.

לאוְהַפִּשְׁתָּ֥ה וְהַשְּׂעֹרָ֖ה נֻכָּ֑תָה כִּ֤י הַשְּׂעֹרָה֙ אָבִ֔יב וְהַפִּשְׁתָּ֖ה גִּבְעֹֽל:

9:32

But the wheat and spelt have not been destroyed, since they arelate in sprouting.' 
Vehachitah vehakusemet lo nuku ki afilot henah.

לבוְהַֽחִטָּ֥ה וְהַכֻּסֶּ֖מֶת לֹ֣א נֻכּ֑וּ כִּ֥י אֲפִילֹ֖ת הֵֽנָּה:

9:33

Last Reading
Moses left Pharaoh's presence, and went out of the city. As soon as he spread his hands out to God, the thunder ceased, and the hail and rain stopped falling to the ground. 
Vayetse Moshe me'im Par'oh et-ha'ir vayifros kapav el-Adonay vayachdelu hakolot vehabarad umatar lo-nitach artsah.

לגוַיֵּצֵ֨א משֶׁ֜ה מֵעִ֤ם פַּרְעֹה֙ אֶת־הָעִ֔יר וַיִּפְרֹ֥שׂ כַּפָּ֖יו אֶל־יְהֹוָ֑ה וַיַּחְדְּל֤וּ הַקֹּלוֹת֙ וְהַבָּרָ֔ד וּמָטָ֖ר לֹֽא־נִתַּ֥ךְ אָֽרְצָה:

9:34

But when Pharaoh saw that there was no longer any rain, hail or thunder, he continued his sinful ways. He and his officials continued to make themselves obstinate. 
Vayar Par'oh ki-chadal hamatar vehabarad vehakolot vayosef lachato vayachbed libo hu va'avadav.

לדוַיַּ֣רְא פַּרְעֹ֗ה כִּֽי־חָדַ֨ל הַמָּטָ֧ר וְהַבָּרָ֛ד וְהַקֹּלֹ֖ת וַיֹּ֣סֶף לַֽחֲטֹ֑א וַיַּכְבֵּ֥ד לִבּ֖וֹ ה֥וּא וַֽעֲבָדָֽיו:

9:35

Pharaoh hardened his heart and did not let the Israelites leave, just as God had predicted through Moses. 
Vayechezak lev Par'oh velo shilach et-beney Yisra'el ka'asher diber Adonay beyad-Moshe.

להוַיֶּֽחֱזַק֙ לֵ֣ב פַּרְעֹ֔ה וְלֹ֥א שִׁלַּ֖ח אֶת־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה בְּיַד־משֶֽׁה:
