15:1
Vayómer Shemuel el-Shaul: otí shaláj Adonay limshajá lemelekh al-amó al-Yisrael; veatá shemá lekol divré Adonay.
And Samuel said to Saul: The Eternal sent me to anoint you king over His people, over Israel; now therefore listen to the voice of the words of the Eternal.
15:2
Kó amar Adonay Tzevaot: pakádeti et asher asá Amalek leYisrael asher sam lo badérej baalotó miMitzráyim.
Thus says the Eternal of Hosts: I remember what Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him on the way when he came up from Egypt.
15:3
Atá lej vehikíta et-Amalek vehajaramtém et kol asher lo velo tajmól aláv; vehemtá meísh ad-ishá, meolél vead-yonék, mishór vead-se, migamál vead-jamor.
Now go and strike Amalek, and utterly destroy all that he has, and do not spare him; but kill both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.
15:4
Vayesháma Shaul et-haam vayifkedém bateláim; matáyim élef raglí vaaseret alafím et-ish Yehudá.
And Saul summoned the people and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah.
15:5
Vayavó Shaul ad-ir Amalek vayárev banájal.
And Saul came to the city of Amalek and lay in wait in the valley.
15:6
Vayómer Shaul el-Hakeiní: lejú surú redú mitój Amalekí pen-osifjá imó; veatá asíta jésed im kol bené Yisrael baalotám miMitzráyim; vayásar Keiní mitój Amalek.
And Saul said to the Kenite: Go, depart, go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for you showed kindness to all the Children of Israel when they came up from Egypt. So the Kenite departed from among Amalek.
15:7
Vayák Shaul et-Amalek mejavilá boajá Shur asher al-pené Mitzráyim.
And Saul struck Amalek from Havilah as you go toward Shur, which is before Egypt.
15:8
Vayitpós et-Agag mélej Amalek jái; veet kol-haam hejerím lefí-járev.
And he captured Agag king of Amalek alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
15:9
Vayajmól Shaul vehaam al-Agag veal-meitáv hatzón vehabakár vehamishním veal-hakarím veal kol-hatóv; velo avú hajarimám; vechol-hamelajá nimbezá venamés otá hejerímu.
But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and the cattle, the fatlings and the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to destroy them; but everything that was despised and worthless, that they destroyed utterly.
15:10
Vayehí devar-Adonay el-Shemuel lemór.
Then the word of the Eternal came to Samuel, saying:
15:11
Nijamtí ki-himlajtí et-Shaul lemelekh; ki-shav meajarai ve’et-devarai lo hekím; vayíjar liShemuel vayizák el-Adonay kol-haláyla.
“I regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned back from following Me and has not carried out My words.” And Samuel was distressed, and he cried out to the Eternal all night.
15:12
Vayashkém Shemuel likrát Shaul babóker; vayugád liShemuel lemór: ba Shaul haKarmélah, vehiné matzív lo yad; vayisóv vayaavor vayeréd haGilgál.
Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, and it was told to Samuel, saying, “Saul has gone to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself; and he turned and passed on and went down to Gilgal.”
15:13
Vayavó Shemuel el-Shaul; vayómer lo Shaul: Barúj atá laAdonay; hakimotí et-devar Adonay.
Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, “Blessed are you of the Eternal; I have carried out the word of the Eternal.”
15:14
Vayómer Shemuel: Umeh kol-hatzón hazé beoznái, vekol habakár asher anojí shoméa?
But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears and the lowing of cattle that I hear?”
15:15
Vayómer Shaul: MeAmalekí heviúm; asher jamál haam al-meitáv hatzón vehabakár lemaán zevóaj laAdonay Elohéja; ve’et-hayotér hejerámnu.
Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and the cattle, to sacrifice to the Eternal your God; but the rest we have utterly destroyed.”
15:16
Vayómer Shemuel el-Shaul: Heref, veagidá lejá et asher diber Adonay elai haláyla; vayómer lo: Dabér.
Then Samuel said to Saul, “Be still, and I will tell you what the Eternal spoke to me this night.” And he said to him, “Speak.”
15:16
Vayómer Shemuel el-Shaul: heref veagidá lejá et asher diber Adonay elai haláyla; vayómer lo: dabér.
And Samuel said to Saul: Stop, and I will tell you what the Eternal said to me this night. And he said to him: Speak.
15:17
Vayómer Shemuel: haló im-katón atá beéneja, rosh shivtéi Yisrael atá; vayimshajá Adonay lemelekh al-Yisrael.
And Samuel said: Though you were small in your own eyes, were you not made head of the tribes of Israel? And the Eternal anointed you king over Israel.
15:18
Vayishlajá Adonay badárej; vayómer: lej vehajaramtá et-hajatáim et-Amalek; veniljamtá bo ad-kalotám otám.
And the Eternal sent you on a mission and said: Go and utterly destroy the sinners, Amalek, and fight against them until they are consumed.
15:19
Velamá lo-shamáta bekol Adonay; vataat el-hashalál; vataas hará beénei Adonay.
Why then did you not obey the voice of the Eternal, but flew upon the spoil and did evil in the sight of the Eternal?
15:20
Vayómer Shaul el-Shemuel: asher shamáti bekol Adonay; vaeléj badárej asher shelajáni Adonay; vaaví et-Agag mélej Amalek; veet-Amalek hejerámti.
And Saul said to Samuel: I have obeyed the voice of the Eternal and have gone on the mission which the Eternal sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek and utterly destroyed Amalek.
15:21
Vayikáj haam mehahshalál tzon uvakár reshít hajérem lizbóaj LaAdonay Elohéja bagilgál.
But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of what was devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the Eternal your God in Gilgal.
15:22
Vayómer Shemuel: hajéfetz LaAdonay beolót uzvajím kishmoa bekol Adonay? Hiné shemoa mizevaj tov; lehakshív mejélev eilím.
And Samuel said: Has the Eternal as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Eternal? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.
15:23
Ki jatat-késem merí; veaven uterafím haftzár; yaán maástá et-devar Adonay; vayimásjá mimelekh.
For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Eternal, He has also rejected you from being king.
15:24
Vayómer Shaul el-Shemuel: jatáti ki-avárti et-pí Adonay veet-devareja; ki yaréti et-haam vaeshmá bekolám.
And Saul said to Samuel: I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of the Eternal and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.
15:25
Veatá sá na et-jatatí; veshúv imí; veeshtajavé LaAdonay.
Now therefore, please pardon my sin and return with me, that I may worship the Eternal.
15:26
Vayómer Shemuel el-Shaul: lo ashuv imáj; ki maástá et-devar Adonay; vayimásjá Adonay mihyot mélej al-Yisrael.
And Samuel said to Saul: I will not return with you; for you have rejected the word of the Eternal, and the Eternal has rejected you from being king over Israel.
15:27
Vayisóv Shemuel laléjet; vayajazék biknáf meíló vayikará.
And as Samuel turned to go away, he seized the skirt of his robe, and it tore.
15:28
Vayómer eláv Shemuel: kará Adonay et-mamléjut Yisrael mealéja hayóm; unetaná lereajá hatóv mimeká.
And Samuel said to him: The Eternal has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you.
15:29
Vegam Netzaj Yisrael lo yeshakér velo yinajém; ki lo adám hu lehinajém.
And also the Glory of Israel will not lie nor relent; for He is not a man that He should relent.
15:30
Vayómer: jatáti; atá kabdéni na néged zikné ami venéged Yisrael; veshúv imí vehishtajavéti LaAdonay Elohéja.
And he said: I have sinned; yet honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, that I may worship the Eternal your God.
15:31
Vayáshav Shemuel ajaré Shaul; vayishtajavé Shaul LaAdonay.
So Samuel returned after Saul, and Saul worshiped the Eternal.
15:32
Vayómer Shemuel: hagíshu elai et-Agag mélej Amalek; vayélej eláv Agag maadanót; vayómer Agag: ajén sar mar-hamávet.
Then Samuel said: Bring here to me Agag the king of Amalek. And Agag came to him cheerfully. And Agag said: Surely the bitterness of death is past.
15:33
Vayómer Shemuel: kaasher shikelá nashím jarbejá, ken tishkál minashím imejá; vayeshasef Shemuel et-Agag lifné Adonay bagilgál.
And Samuel said: As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the Eternal in Gilgal.
15:34
Vayélej Shemuel haramáta; veShaul alá el-betó Givat Shaul.
Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house at Gibeah of Saul.
